What is a reborn doll? Reborn dolls - harm or benefit? What are reborn dolls made from?

Church holidays

Recently, an Australian policeman noticed a baby in the front seat of a closed parked car. The child was not breathing. A police officer broke the glass to help, but the child did not need help. It was a doll. Reborn doll.

Even upon closer inspection, well-made Reborn dolls look extremely similar to real children. Unless they blink their glass eyes. Until recently, they did not breathe, did not scream and did not soil diapers, but even these minor shortcomings are now surmountable if the customer has the desire and a tidy sum of money. If you ask today what Reborn dolls can do, the correct answer would be everything.

Heating elements can be built into the body of an artificial baby to maintain the temperature of a living child. Mechanisms that imitate breathing movements and heartbeats, and a sound device to imitate laughter, crying and “crying” are mounted in the chest. Just hug “mom” "Reborn" babies They still can’t, and they can’t even smile at her... But progress doesn’t stand still, just look - in a year or two, the Reborn dolls will learn to do this too.

Where did Reborn dolls come from?

The name comes from the English word reborn, which translates as “born again.” The master creates a doll based on a factory blank and gives it “new life.” The first baby dolls, very similar to babies, were born thanks to the Spanish designer Salvador Berenger. The company he founded in the USA, JC Toys, still produces high-quality dolls sold throughout the world for children's play and adult collections.

Currently, in online stores you can find kits for making dolls from Reborn and other manufacturers. The blanks are called “molds”, and are sold both retail and in a set consisting of a head, arms, legs, a rag or all-vinyl body, paints, eyes, hairs and devices for working with all this. I must say that this set looks very unusual, not all nerves can withstand...

The birth of artificial babies

Manufacturing Reborn dolls begins in the workshop of a sculptor who creates realistic molds - blanks for the future doll. Then the master reborn artist begins work, in whose hands the Reborn dolls acquire their extraordinary realism. The master inserts eyes made of glass or even crystal, “implants” eyelashes and hairs made of fine mohair using a special needle, and then paints the surface of the vinyl blank using special paints.

Painting is done in several layers. The master applies a translucent network of veins and capillaries to the “skin”, creating the “marbling” of the skin, moles, and freckles characteristic of newborns. At the last stage, the body is stuffed. The weight is usually adjusted to match the normal weight of a living child. Holofiber, padding polyester balls and glass granules for weighting are used as filler.

Some Reborn dolls imitate premature babies, others imitate older children. There are, however, collectible dolls depicting monkeys and characters from famous books or films “in infancy.”

Why do they make and buy Reborn dolls?

Initially, realistic dolls were intended, like all others, for children's games. Then they began to be used in courses for pregnant women - as exercise equipment. Owners of stores selling children's goods use “reborns” as mannequins. Dolls are collected, and these collections include up to several hundred dolls.

But it happens that Reborn dolls replace real children for people. There are known cases when parents who lost their child ordered a copy of it from reborn specialists, and this doll helped them survive the stress of the loss. Mature women buy Reborn dolls to fill the void left when grown children leave the parental home. Young girls - to get used to the role of a mother.

Psychologists have very different opinions regarding the use of dolls in this capacity. There are often cases when, being overly carried away by “reborns”, a woman no longer thinks about having real children and replaces reality with playing with dolls. Of course, a doll is more convenient. She is not needed, she does not get sick, does not scream at night, does not require constant attention. If you have time, you can even take a walk with her. There is no time to put it in a box and in a closet. Ersatz motherhood, ersatz love, ersatz life... Isn’t that why Reborn dolls evoke a creepy impression in many people?

Be that as it may, popularity Reborn dolls growing year by year. Their cost ranges from several hundred to tens of thousands of dollars, and buyers sometimes wait months for a doll to be made by a famous craftsman. Although masters call the process of creating a reborn not “manufacturing”, but birth...

Reborn, from English “reborn” (born again) are dolls that completely imitate real babies. They should have the size and proportions of a real child. If at first these dolls were intended for children to play with, now more and more often reborns are an adult hobby, and not a cheap one.

Reborns for children

Reborns today are predominantly an adult hobby. But there are also elements of reborns in the children's toy industry. For example, Baby Born, Baby Doll, Newborn dolls, which are very similar to living babies.

Reborns for adults

Adults play reborns like real children

Adults play Reborn. It's a whole industry. Wealthy women set aside entire “children’s” rooms for them in their homes, buying a crib and clothes. Basically, everyone “plays” at babies, but there are reborns like 3-year-old children. There is an active discussion in society about the ethical aspects of playing reborns. However, there are also positive aspects; psychologists talk about the relaxing effect of reborns on their owners. There are cases where reborns have brought back to life seriously ill people, parents who have lost their children, and those who are unable to have their own child.

There are collectors of reborns; they do not play with dolls, but buy them for collecting. One of the private Russian collections of reborn dolls is valued at 5 million rubles.

Among the clients who buy reborns are owners of baby stores; they buy reborns as mannequins. Reborns are bought for courses for young parents. The main sales platform for reborns is the Internet.

Story

In the world, reborns began to gain popularity in the 90s of the 20th century. The USA is called their homeland. This hobby came to Russia in the early 2000s. In 2002, a section appeared on eBay (online store) where you can sell and buy reborns.

Australian Dana-Lynn Mauldin has been making reborns for 10 years, and has more than 100 dolls in her collection.

Reborns are made so realistically that there are many cases where they were confused with real children. For example, in Australia (Queensland), in June 2008, a police officer broke the window of a car in which a reborn doll was left in the front seat. And the peace officer thought that this was a real child who had been forgotten by his parents.

An Association of Reborn Doll Artists (IRDA) has appeared in the world; the date of birth is considered to be January 21, 2005. Its purpose is to train reborn artists, unite them, and pass on experience. Any master rebornist can join the Association if he supports the ethical principles proclaimed by the organization. There are now about 30 professional rebornists in Russia.

Handmade reborns

The technology for producing handmade reborns is quite complex and the creation of one reborn sometimes takes several months, or even years. Several craftsmen are involved in the process: a sculptor, a master reborn artist, and a clothing master.

Main stages of work:

1. The sculptor makes a mold - a vinyl blank. You can choose skin color, eye shape, pose, facial expression. The main aspect is the age of the future reborn. There are those who want to receive a doll of a premature baby, and there are those who order 3-year-olds.

2. Assembling the reborn: inserting glass eyes, sewing in hair (natural hair or threads of the finest mohair are used). It is made by a master rebornist. Hair is the most difficult part of the job. The process is reminiscent of the work of surgeons in plastic hair transplant clinics. Each hair is inserted with a needle at a certain angle, the work takes a month or more.

3. Reborn painting. It is made by a master reborn artist. Each layer of painting is baked in an air fryer. In total, about 30 layers are made: veins, freckles, moles are drawn. Painting is not afraid of water; it can only be destroyed with a solvent.

4. The master reborn artist stuffs the doll with small balls - glass granules. Different parts of the body weigh differently, just like real babies (that is, the heaviest are the head and pelvis). The final weight of the reborn should also correspond to the weight of a real baby - that is, more than 3 kg.

5. Reborn is put on a diaper and clothes on top. They buy clothes in children's stores or order exclusive items from a clothing designer: knitted, embroidered.

6. Modern reborns are equipped with electronic devices that simulate a heartbeat and also raise the chest, as if the “baby” is breathing. Sometimes reborn babies are ordered with an umbilical cord, as well as with heat packs inside to feel the warmth of the reborn. There are those who want to hear a reborn, for such people voice imitators are inserted into the doll.

Vinyl blanks (set) before and after painting

Reborn baby care

People actually play with these dolls as if they were real children. And they take care of them just like real children. They wash their hair with real baby shampoo, wipe their faces with wet wipes, bathe them, change diapers, put on different outfits, and even take them out for a walk in a stroller.

Prices for reborns for adults

A 52-centimeter reborn costs 15,000 - 30,000 rubles, in US dollars - from 500 to 1,500. A doll for a 5-year-old child can cost more than 5,000 US dollars.

Education

Many reborn artists are self-taught; there are no special educational institutions for reborn artists yet. For many, this is a hobby, not their main occupation. There is a master class by Victoria Vishnya and Katerina Osipova (these are famous Russian masters, their works are known all over the world, they receive orders for collector's items). It costs 15,000 rubles and is held in Moscow. Vinyl blanks (body parts) for future reborn babies are sold on the Internet. Beginners can turn any vinyl doll into a reborn, adding realism with painting. In 2005, the Secrist doll company began industrial production of special kits for reborn artists (these are blanks for dolls, as well as devices for painting). In 2007, the same set appeared from JC Toys. You can buy both individual parts of future reborns and the entire future reborn for assembly and painting (in sets).

All-inclusive kits include: limbs, head, torso, cosmetic foam, artificial tears, adhesives, fabric imitating skin. There are also non-toxic paints (this is important for those who paint dolls), hair, eyes of various colors and sizes.

In this article I would like to express my thoughts about Reborn dolls, since this topic seems interesting and relevant to me.

First, I will present brief information from the Internet. A Reborn doll (from the English reborn - having received a new life, reborn) is a doll created on the basis of a factory baby doll (less often an older child), the appearance of which resembles a living baby as much as possible. The process of creating a doll is called reborning, and doll artists are called reborners. Reborns weigh and look like real babies. They are created using natural hair or hair, glass eyes, a special composition of vinyl and paint, as well as various fillers (weights) for the body. Modern Reborns can contain “revitalizing” mechanisms, with the help of which quite realistic “heartbeat”, “breathing” and even speech are created!

The craft of making Reborns appeared in the USA in the late 80s and early 90s of the 20th century. The Internet has allowed doll artists and collectors to create their own online community. In 2002, the first “reborn” doll was listed on eBay. This expanded the Reborn market, allowing artists to open online stores, so-called “baby shops.” In “children’s” Reborns are not bought, but rather adopted, and almost never resold. The media contributed to the development of the movement in other countries and continents - Britain, Australia, Canada, Europe, Africa and Latin America. In this regard, magazines, books and organizations dedicated to the Reborn doll began to appear. In Russia, this hobby has intensified since 2008.
Reborns can also be made at home. To do this, you need a play vinyl baby doll, or a special kit for creating Reborn. The paint is removed from the factory doll and it is painted again. The sculptor's blanks (molds) are not painted, and already have their own physical characteristics - folds, nails, etc. Body painting is done in several layers, and the painted body parts are baked in a convection oven.

Sets of body parts of the future Reborn are affectionately called “Frankenstein sets” by some master artists, and finished dolls are called “doll babies.” Reborn's arms, legs and head in the package resemble the “dismemberment” from Dexter Morgan from the US television series of the same name. Usually, all the “flaws” of a baby’s skin – rashes, scratches, as well as sniffles and drool – are used by the creators in the form of painting to add more realism. Some craftsmen create their dolls using a photograph of a real child to reproduce his appearance.

The image of the Reborn doll, which almost completely coincides with the image of a real and individual baby, is capable of evoking in its owner the emotions and feelings that he might experience for a living child. I have repeatedly watched videos on the Internet in which happy “parents” of Reborns, with caution and care, corrected their babies’ tilted back heads. Moreover, such “parents” buy them real strollers and baby clothes, mate with them and cradle them like real babies! All this reminds me of the state of false pregnancy in bitches, when they take toys, lick them and try to feed them, as if they were dealing with puppies! I am interested in the fact that in the box with the finished Reborn doll there is always a certificate of his birth, which indicates his date of birth, height and weight, as if we are not talking about a doll, but about a living child. I also saw bracelets for newborns on the Internet, placed on the hands of Reborns.

As a rule, Reborn is not cheap, its cost varies from 5 thousand to many tens of thousands of rubles. Therefore, Reborns are not often bought as gifts for young children. Most often they are purchased by: either collectors; or single women without children; or those who have lost a child and want to find a replacement for him; or women who have raised children and dream of nursing a child again.

What are the dangers of Reborn dolls? At first glance, they are sweet and innocent, and are not capable of causing mental harm to their owners. But this is only at first glance.

Let's remember our old homemade dolls made from rags, straw, fur or strings. The beauty of these dolls is that in their appearance there is only a hint of individuality, that is, these are image dolls or archetype dolls - mother, girl, Baba Yaga, brownie, horse, etc. Such dolls are weakly personalized, and they enable the child, while playing with them, to develop his imagination, to supplement their figures with meaningful details. When playing with Reborn, a child cannot qualitatively change anything in his appearance (add or subtract). The maximum he can do is take off or put clothes on Reborn, as well as walk with him or feed him. That is, the child from an active creator in the game becomes... a service staff! Seeing the hyper-realistic Reborn in front of him, a child may perceive him not as a doll, but as almost his equal (a brother or sister), but only dead. And therefore, the child may develop a distant or suspicious attitude towards Reborn. And if you also consider that the mother bought Reborn for herself, then the child most likely will not be allowed to play with him. A child may be punished for damaging such an expensive toy, which may make him jealous of Reborn or hate his parents.

There are known models of sleeping Reborns (the so-called “Scops Owls”), premature and damaged (sick) ones. It goes without saying that their influence on the psyche of owners, especially children, is unpredictable. In their subconscious, attitudes towards Reborns can be formed: “eternally premature”, “will never get better”, “sick forever”, “will never wake up”, which are essentially Thanatos according to S. Freud, as opposed to Eros.

With the emergence of the popularity of Reborn, resonant programs arose in Russia and abroad, such as “Male-Female” with Yulia Baranovskaya and Alexander Gordon and the acutely social talk show “Ukraine Speaks” with Alexey Sukhanov “Vinyl Children”. It is interesting that the audience, opposed to the Reborns, expressed their opinion in purely emotional terms, almost without explaining it in terms of reason and logic. The fact is that science describes the phenomenon of the “Uncanny Valley” or the uncanny valley effect. The essence of the hypothesis is that a robot or other object that looks or acts almost like a person causes hostility or disgust in human observers. In 1978, Japanese scientist Masahiro Mori conducted a survey examining people's emotional reactions to the appearance of robots. At first, the results were predictable - the more human-like a robot is, the more attractive it seems - but only up to a certain limit. The most humanoid robots later turned out to be unexpectedly unpleasant. This decline in the “likes” chart has been called the “Uncanny Valley.” The reason may be that at a certain level of similarity between a robot and a person, the robot ceases to be perceived as a machine, and begins to seem like an abnormal person or an animated corpse, a cadaver. It is this effect that is felt by all those people who are disgusted by Reborns.

According to esoteric literature and the opinion of psychics, Reborn may well become a haven for a restless soul or demonic energy. Such a doll can have a negative mental impact on the surrounding space, up to the occurrence of a poltergeist. Hyperrealistic Reborn is capable of overexciting the psyche of an impressionable child, which can lead to the development of a phobic, anxiety disorder and sleep disorders. I came across a user’s statement on the Internet: “body minus soul equals corpse.”

In fact, the “mothers” of vinyl “children” invest their emotions and feelings into pieces of plastic, which is a transfer of maternal instinct to inanimate objects, and can lead to mental or hormonal dependence. The position of limited and infantile parenthood in relation to Reborn is very convenient, since a lifeless child can always be thrown into a dusty corner if he gets tired of him. Collecting itself is, according to the Eastern tradition, a retreat into Maya and an increase in illusion leading to nowhere. It is no coincidence that many collectors exhibit traits of pedantry and suspiciousness in their character, insensitivity to others, egocentrism and fantasy thinking, divorced from reality. Therefore, before purchasing an expensive and fashionable Reborn doll, consult with your family and friends, read various information on the Internet, go for a consultation with a psychologist or psychotherapist, in general, weigh all the pros and cons. A thoughtless purchase of Reborn can bring discord into your life and harm your mental health.

Video: Reborn dolls in Russia:

You probably already know what it is reborn dolls and what is their difference from all other dolls. You may even be in the process of choosing your future reborn baby. We strongly advise you to read this article to choose such a reborn doll, the purchase of which you would not have to regret later.

Brief information for those who don't know.
The term “Reborn” in translation means “born again” or “reborn”. Reborn dolls received this name for their maximum resemblance to living children. The creation of the first reborns is attributed to the Spanish Berenger family in the mid-50s of the last century, and factory production began only in 1993 in the USA. Today, both factory and hand-made production of reborn dolls has turned into an entire industry.

But it must be said that this industry is growing and developing solely thanks to the Internet. You yourself have probably already noticed that you cannot find reborn dolls in regular stores. They refuse to put them on shelves because they are too similar to living children. Today you can find and buy a reborn doll only on the Internet.

What is special about these dolls, called reborns?

Reborns, for the most part, are made by hand. This applies not only to designer dolls, but also to factory ones. The fact is that the main production process, painting the doll (when lips, folds, eyebrows, nails, etc. are drawn), is difficult to automate. Therefore, even in factories they are hand-painted and that is why they are relatively inexpensive.

The cost of factory reborn dolls ranges from 5 to 12 thousand rubles. Original reborns made by private craftsmen cost from 20 thousand rubles. and up to several hundred thousand. Further we will talk only about factory dolls, because... We produce and sell them ourselves under the “RebornKids” brand.

So, factory reborn dolls are completely silicone (or silicone-vinyl) and soft-stuffed, differing from completely silicone only in that their bodies are made of rags, stuffed with soft filling (usually synthetic fluff). Soft-filled animals cannot be bathed, because... The filler will immediately become unusable when immersed in water.

Also, reborns can be sleeping (with their eyes closed) and not sleeping. The first ones' eyes do not open; they are always closed. In general, reborn dolls do not have any functions, such as the ability to feed, urinate, voice effects, etc. However, children really enjoy playing with them due to the realistic nature of these dolls. By the way, realism is achieved not only due to their appearance, but also due to their height and weight, which are as similar as possible to the height and weight of living babies.

However, as they say...

..Not all reborn dolls are equally “useful”!..

Cheap reborns manufactured in underground Chinese factories are now available in large quantities on the market. Yes, yes, don't be surprised! Clandestine workshops in China “cook” almost everything, even reborn dolls! And it is precisely from such underground workers that you are so afraid to acquire anything (and deservedly so).

Many online stores offer just such low-quality reborn dolls, believing that the cheaper the product, the better. But underground factories, as a rule, produce them from cheap materials that are harmful to health! If you choose a reborn baby as a gift for your child, keep this in mind! Do you want your child to come into contact with a toxic toy? But children can play with reborn dolls for days on end.

How to distinguish a “harmful” reborn doll from a “useful” one?

When choosing a reborn in an online store, this is not so easy. In the photo they all look almost the same. But bad stores selling low-quality goods can be identified by several indirect signs.

The first thing that should alert you is the price. If it is noticeably lower than others, it means that you are looking at a low-grade product from underground workers.

Secondly, this is, of course, the presence of a certificate. If the store’s website does not provide a scanned copy of the certificate for the product being sold, you can safely close this site. Just pay attention to the fact that if there is a certificate, it should be possible to enlarge it in order to read which product and which organization it was issued for.

Our RebornKids dolls have passed mandatory certification in Russia, and you can see the corresponding certificate.

Thirdly, try to find out whether the online store has a live showroom or an offline point of sale where you can see and touch the dolls in person. At the same time, you don’t have to actually go to another city; the very fact that the online store has such a physical point is important.

If this is not possible, you should ask the store manager why? Arguments like “we are in a small town where there is no point in opening a point of sale” sound very unconvincing! Our company, for example, is located in the small town of Gelendzhik, but this does not prevent us from having a showroom here, where anyone can come and see for themselves the high quality of RebornKids dolls. We also have a showroom in Moscow, and we periodically participate in various fairs. There is no shame in showing our reborn dolls to customers live.

Well, fourthly, ask if the online store’s products have their own brand? The presence of a trademark registered in Russia says a lot. If there is such a brand (which is rare), you can safely choose a doll there and make a purchase! But, as a rule, most online stores sell dolls without any brand, or hide behind Chinese brands such as “NPK dolls”.

Our company (IP Krutikov E.V.) has its own brand “Reborn Kids”, officially registered in Russia (link to the entry in the register on the official website of FIPS), and only our dolls have the inscription “RebornKids”™ on the back of the head, which is a guarantee of quality and the safety of the materials used. We value our brand, so we very zealously monitor production technology and the materials used.

So, now you know how to distinguish a good online store from a bad one and how to choose an inexpensive but high-quality factory reborn doll so that it brings your child only joy and no harm to health!
