Patchwork, or as it is commonly called today, patchwork, is an ancient, but now very popular needlework technique. Judging by the name, it is easy to guess that this type of applied craftsmanship involves working with multi-colored pieces and scraps of fabric, from which, in the process, a new, colorful, unique product is created. A quilted product made from scraps is called a quilt. At the very beginning of mastering the technique of patchwork, of course, it will be difficult to decide on making a large product such as a blanket or tablecloth. Therefore, it is best to start with something small, for example, by making a patchwork pot holder for your kitchen.
Every good housewife always wants to bring warmth and comfort into her home. And it’s no secret that textiles contribute to a comfortable atmosphere in the interior. And when it comes to decorating the kitchen, there is room for your imagination to run wild. For example, sewing oven mitts. These cute little things can become a wonderful decorative decoration, a useful gift, or even serve practically in your kitchen. Potholders using the patchwork technique look very beautiful and unusual. Such products come out in small sizes, and even the smallest pieces of fabric can be used to sew them.
So patchwork is widely used in the manufacture of potholders for the kitchen. They can be quilted (quilted), round, square and rectangular (traditional patchwork), or even mitten-shaped or crazy patchwork. Nowadays, on the Internet you can find any master class and various patterns for beginner lovers of patchwork techniques.
What details need to be taken into account when making patchwork potholders for the kitchen? The main purpose of a potholder is to protect your hands from burns and injuries, which means it should be thick, dense and comfortable. Appearance is also important, so you need to know which fabrics are best to use when sewing.
This master class will show you how to make the simplest square patchwork potholders with your own hands. For this method you will need four types of fabric. We start by cutting out four multi-colored squares. Cut the resulting squares into triangles. Sew two triangles. Then we perform these actions with the remaining triangles.
We connect the sewn parts into a square and prepare a loop
We cut out the reverse side of the product from a single piece of fabric
We combine all the cut out parts, rounding the corners and inserting a loop, place a pad of batting or padding polyester in the middle, stitch it, leaving two to three centimeters so that you can turn the potholder right side out. Your DIY pot holder is ready!
The next master class will help you make a heart-shaped potholder, which can decorate not only your kitchen, but also serve as an excellent gift for Valentine's Day. You will say that such a gift is not suitable as a present for your beloved man? But this is not so, because it can be given not only to a man, and you also need to take into account the fact that many of them know how and love to cook, spending a lot of time in the kitchen.
Therefore, let's start making a potholder in the shape of a heart. We select fabric in two shades, preferably choosing from red, pink, orange or lilac tones. Plain chintz and fabric with a pattern are best suited. You will also need threads to match the color of the fabric, cardboard for the pattern, and material for the lining - foam rubber or batting.
First, we make a heart-shaped template from cardboard, place it on the prepared fabric and cut out two parts of different colors. Then we fold the fabrics inside out to each other, fasten them with pins and cut them into three parts along inclined straight lines, cutting off the side parts. As a result, it should turn out that the middle part of the heart will be in the shape of a trapezoid. Then we swap the centers of the two parts and get two flaps in which the middle will be one color, and the sides will be another. We begin to sew the flaps. We fold the middle part with one of the side right sides, aligning the edges, and make a connecting seam, and then sew the third part of the heart in the same way. If the edges are uneven, they can be trimmed with scissors. Then, using the template, you need to cut out a heart for the gasket, and put all the parts together, fastening them with pins. Then you need to stitch all the layers. That's all, the master class is over, and our heart-shaped potholder is ready.
First you need to make a template, then fold the fabric in half, placing the pattern inside and cutting out two parts, and then the same one from the lining material. Then fold the prepared blanks back to back and sew along the edge, and in the place where the mitten transitions to the thumb, you need to cut it out, not reaching the line 3 mm, leaving a few centimeters so that you can turn it right side out. To finish making the mitten, you need to do hand stitching.
Take different shreds, choose one of them, it must be irregular in shape, if necessary, trim the edges with scissors, then attach a second shred to it, its edges should be larger than those of the first, and sew them together. Then iron them well. And thus assemble the canvas of the required size.
The diagrams show the order of assembling potholders in the crazy style
The finished solid fabric needs to be ironed well. Then you need to cut a square of the required size from the lining fabric, which will serve as the underside of the patchwork potholder. Then place the lining on the wrong side of the bottom piece, and the patchwork part on top, pin it together, and sew. Next, make the edging for your potholder.
Patchwork pot holders can be sewn from any leftover fabric; they can serve you practically or be simply a decorative decoration for your kitchen! Good luck in creating these useful and beautiful products!
In order for handicrafts to begin to bring pleasure, you will have to work hard. Starting is never easy. You also need to learn patchwork sewing. Not everything works out right away: your hands don’t obey, your eye fails. This is what the experience of the masters is for. Having mastered video lessons, photo materials and a master class with their tips and secrets, you can safely bring to life any idea - from making a simple pot holder to a new sofa upholstery.
Patchwork is very popular today - a handicraft in which colored scraps of fabric are assembled into a whole product with a planned pattern based on the principle of a mosaic. The result of such a fascinating process can be a recognizable image of some objects, geometric patterns or fancy patterns. Ideas for patchwork can be taken from photo and video lessons, as well as master classes.
Initially, the patches were sewn together to save material, and the patchwork had very specific tasks. Now the patchwork technique is the desire to create beauty while enjoying this magical action. Quilted bedspreads, decorative panels, blankets and pillows, oven mitts, updated furniture, and clothes are pleasing to the eye.
To understand the basics of patchwork technique, you need to get acquainted with its main types in master classes and videos
Basicspatchworksewing:
It is much more difficult to correct errors on a finished canvas.
In general, the patchwork technique should be taken seriously, considering all color combinations even for potholders - after all, they, like sloppy work, can ruin the item and discourage you from mastering such an exciting handicraft.
To begin with, they collect all the scraps of fabric, sort them by texture and color, and begin to create a pattern. You can do the opposite: come up with a pattern or find it on MK, photos and videos, and then cut blanks from purchased fabrics.
From all the abundance of fabric scraps stored at home, it is important to choose the right combination for the future product
The second step is to create a sketch of an oven mitt, pillow or napkin. It is better for beginning needlewomen to use ready-made patterns from magazines or MKs from the Internet.
The process of joining shreds into a whole canvas:
In addition to sewing, there is also knitted patchwork, where the flaps are connected to each other using crochet and contrasting thread.
In addition to threads, fabric and machines, the patchwork technique uses:
In handicraft stores you can find patchwork kits - with pattern diagrams, MK.
Patterns for patchwork can be found in the kit or made yourself
Patchwork kit includes fabrics, necessary tools, templates and block diagrams
You can create diagrams and templates yourself or take ready-made patterns from the Internet, books or magazines. Templates are cut along the contour of the part, taking into account seam allowances. The material for production can be cardboard, thick paper, plastic. For accuracy, you can stick graph paper on the cardboard, and then cut out the shape of the intended size. When making curved blanks, longitudinal cuts-notches must be made on the outer contour of the template - it is convenient to mark seams along them when connecting the flaps.
Photo and video tutorials on patchwork sewing offer diagrams, templates and MK
The most convenient templates are frames. The inner part must correspond to the finished size of the fragment, the outer part takes into account seam allowances. The width of such a frame is the size of the allowances. When making a pattern, the frame must be circled twice and cut only along the outer contour. The inner outline will show the seam line. The pattern is transferred to the fabric with chalk or soap; any pen leaves marks on the front side. Cutting is done only along the grain thread, so that subsequently the sewn parts do not stretch or warp. Cut out the flaps with regular scissors or a special cutter. A roller cutter makes the process much easier, cutting long strips that are easy to cut into smaller pieces. You can't do without a cutter when the templates are curved.

“Frame” is the simplest and most convenient template for cutting
The pattern can be created based on one repeating figure, for which paper templates are cut out for each part and a flap is basted to it. The seam allowance is folded over the edge and basted again. This is a traditional English technique.
The block technique is more modern: pieces of triangular or square-shaped fabric are sewn into blocks, creating a geometric pattern. A simple block can be made from a small number of large parts. This kind of work takes less effort and time. It is often used by video lessons and MK.
The strip patchwork technique is also known. It differs from the previous version in that the fragments are collected into strips, then they are combined into a canvas. The block technique is convenient because the flaps are sewn together directly on a machine.
In crazy patchwork, the flaps are sewn on according to the applique type: individual flaps of arbitrary shape are beautifully placed on the canvas and sewn. Potholders, blankets, covers come out in two layers.
Special comfort in the interior is created by handmade items, in particular, beautiful and comfortable pillows. Let's try to sew a decorative pillowcase with a voluminous "Rose" application using MK. You can take any scraps for work, the main thing is that they match well in color. Don't forget to prepare the fabric - wash it, iron it.

DIY master class on the topic "Pot holder using patchwork technique"
Author: Zavarzina Irina Anatolyevna, technology teacher, MBOU Yenisei Secondary School No. 3, Minusinsk district, Krasnoyarsk TerritoryDescription of work:
1.Cut out a backing from a piece of thick fabric in the shape of a 23x23 cm square.
The substrate must be divided into 8 equal parts and draw lines with a pencil so that they intersect at one point, this will be the center of our product
An oven mitt is an absolutely indispensable item in any kitchen. Of course, any rag you can get your hands on can play the role of a potholder, but it’s much more pleasant to use a beautiful product, sewn with love and attention. There are many ways to create potholders with your own hands, but in this lesson we will look at one of the simplest and most beautiful ways - patchwork sewing potholders.
Sewing from patchwork or, as it is also called, patchwork is a type of needlework in which the finished product is sewn from small pieces of multi-colored fabric, which are folded into a simple ornament or even a complex pattern. Patchwork pot holders are quite simple to make, so this type of work is perfect for those who have just started doing patchwork, and for those who already consider themselves a professional in this field. Having spent very little time and scraps of fabric that you will probably find in your home, you will get a beautiful craft that you won’t be ashamed to hang in a prominent place in the kitchen, and if you add a towel or an apron to such potholders, you will get a wonderful gift for a friend, mother or mother-in-law .
There are a variety of patterns for sewing patchwork potholders; you can come up with them yourself or find them on the Internet and specialized magazines. And in this master class we will look at several main types of potholders.
For beginners, simple patchwork potholders made from two types of fabric are perfect. Try to choose a fabric so that both types are approximately the same density and fit well together. Cut two strips of equal width from the fabric, fold them right sides together and carefully sew or topstitch along one of the long sides.
After this, unfold the workpiece and iron it thoroughly, while smoothing the seam towards the fabric that is darker.
Now you will need cardboard. Draw an isosceles right triangle on it, mark the middle of its sides and cut it out, trying to do it as neatly as possible.
Start cutting out scraps for potholders. Attach the resulting triangular template to the wrong side of the fabric blank so that the right angle of the triangle is directed upward. Align the center line on the template with the seam on the fabric and trace the triangle with a chalk or pencil. Now turn the cardboard template over so that the right angle is facing down. Align the side of the template with the side of the triangle you just drew on the fabric, and the center line with the seam accordingly. Circle the triangle. Continue marking the patchwork tack parts in the same way, turning the triangular template over. In total you will need four triangles of each color scheme.
Cut out the triangles. There will be eight of them in total, very similar, but half of them have different colors of the original stripes.
Select four identical triangles and sweep them in pairs so that when the resulting workpiece is opened, the strips form an angle of 90 degrees with respect to one another.
You have two blanks. Make a square out of them. For ease of assembly, it is better to iron the workpieces, then the resulting fold will help you find the correct basting line.
Open the back side of the potholder and sew these two parts with right sides facing each other. Leave a small part of the seam unfinished.
Tidy up the potholder - trim off excess fabric from the seams, turn it right side out and straighten the corners using scissors or a sharp pencil.
Inside the pot holder, place a layer of padding polyester that suits your thickness.
The potholder needs a loop for hanging. Open it up and sew along it as shown in the picture.
Sew the finished loop into the corner of the potholder and finish the seam.
Two-color potholders are ready!
This potholder is suitable for those cases when there is only one type of fabric, but you want to make several different potholders at once. Thanks to this technique, the pattern on the potholders is different, but in the same color scheme.
For these potholders you will need fabric with a small pattern, then they will look more interesting.
You need to cut out a triangular template from paper with sides about eleven centimeters long. It is important that the angle is exactly 60 degrees. Using this triangle, we measure the required width of the strip that needs to be cut from the fabric.
Cut another such strip, making sure to match its pattern with the pattern of the first strip.
Place the two strips together and cut fabric triangles using a paper template. Cut out one triangle, then turn the template over and cut out the next one. There should be twelve such triangles in total - six for the top layer and six for the bottom.
You will get triangles like these with stripes arranged in different ways.
Cut out all the triangles and place them in two different piles.
Now is the most creative moment - arrange the triangles into a hexagon the way you like. You may have many options.
Now the resulting hexagon needs to be attached to the adhesive base using an iron. This must be done so that the triangles do not stretch when sewing.
Connect the triangles together using a zigzag stitch.
This is what your potholder should look like from the inside out.
Now cut the batting to size and start edging the potholders. Strips about four centimeters wide must be sewn separately on each side.
First you need to sew a strip, then bend it to the right side, cut it off and attach the next strip to it.
And so on in a circle. In one of the corners, insert a hanger for a potholder made of braid or a stitched strip of fabric.
This is how everything is sheathed in a circle, folded, and stitched. This is a rather labor-intensive process, but the result will live up to your lice expectations.
After this, the edging is wrapped on the wrong side, folded and sewn. The results are very beautiful and different potholders.
Potholders sewn from scraps are an endless field for imagination. You can create your own drawings or use existing ideas.
For example, you can make a potholder like this with a butterfly, sewn from a central square and stripes around the perimeter.
Or “Rose”, on which strips are sewn in random order and at an angle around the central pentagon.
Whatever potholder you choose, go for it and you will succeed. The main thing is to ensure the accuracy of the patterns and seams, regardless of whether you sew by hand or use a sewing machine. Have fun with your crafts.
Methods of patchwork sewing in home handicrafts.
The simple handicraft of our grandmothers from the remaining scraps of fabric has now turned into a whole section of folk arts and crafts called patchwork. Various techniques for combining multi-colored, varied or regular-shaped pieces allow you to create extraordinarily beautiful and extraordinary products. Very often, patchwork is used for interior decoration.
The first steps in mastering patchwork should begin with the simplest techniques:
The most common type of technology. Our ancestors also made carpets using this technology. Thin knitted strips are sewn onto the base. The more varied the color scheme, the more interesting the product.
One of the options for patchwork handicrafts is discussed above.
This type of folk art can be used for any type of bags.
Patchwork techniques are often used to patch holes in socks. But sometimes socks are used for unique homemade products.
Let's look at this technique using the following example.
Let's get down to the main work
The affordable technique of patchwork made from squares is the optimal solution for beginners, as it is simple and easy. To create such a pattern, you can use the bargelo technique given above.
