Met gala themes for different years. Met Gala History: The Costume Institute Ball's Most Celebrity Outfits

New Year

1948 was a landmark year for the fashion industry: New York Fashion Week was launched and the Costume Institute of the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art was founded. And this was done by the hands of one woman, whose name was Eleanor Lambert - the godmother of New York fashion.

Eleanor knew everything about fashion, having received a specialized education at the Art Institute of Chicago, but her first career successes were associated with the advertising business and PR. She has represented America's most successful artists.

After heading the PR department of the Museum of American Art, launching New York Fashion Week, founding the Council of American Designers, she took over the management of the Costume Institute.

To prepare an exhibition about fashion, you need money. Eleanor began hosting annual dinners for society ladies, selling invitations for $50. By the way, an entrance ticket to the modern MET GALA costs from $30,000.

In 1972, Diana Vreeland joined the Costume Institute team as a consultant, and she set a new level for gala evenings by starting to talk not about old and established designers, but about young and promising designers. Which didn’t please everyone, since the Vogue editor, who was fired without explanation, did not have a degree in art history.

By the way, it was Diana who linked the theme of the exhibition with the dress code for guests. Her connections in the fashion world, the support of friends, colleagues and clients helped turn gala evenings and exhibitions into a real must-visit for society ladies.

In 1979, a ticket to the gala dinner cost $1,000, and the Costume Institute received funding from fashion brands such as Chanel and Versace.

In a few more years, with the arrival of Anna Wintour, the Met Gala will turn from an intimate dinner into a global event. For 23 years now, the ball at the Costume Institute has been equated to the “fashion Oscars.” Among the guests are Hollywood stars of the first magnitude; ticket prices start from $30,000 and go up to $250,000 per table. Each participant is personally approved by Wintour, and the Vogue team is behind every outfit and decoration on the red carpet.

The theme of MET GALA 2018 is Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.

Exposition

Let's get inspired by the exhibition before looking at the outfits!

All Met Gala 2018 looks

First of all, I think this is very cool! It’s a pity that we don’t have anything similar in scope and significance in Russia.

After all, this is a huge support for designers, a million opportunities to promote their brand, give emotions to the audience, dress stars in incredible outfits that demonstrate the creative and material power of the fashion house. Our fashion industry is still in its infancy and can only dream of such support.

Judging by the excitement that is happening in the media and social networks before the start of the ball, this event is attracting interest all over the world. We want spectacles! Fashionable spectacles :-)

And at least once a year, thanks to the efforts of Anna Wintour, we, fortunately, receive them.

Anti-rating of suits

Uma Thurman with a creepy ponytail. And in the bride's dress... I would prohibit stylists from choosing white dresses for their clients for the red carpet, because in 99% of cases this is what happens:

Scarlett Johansson with a haircut from the distant past and without styling. She, by the way, is the owner of the most unfortunate dress, in my opinion.

And the top three is completed by Solange Knowles, whom I adore, by the way, and consider her an incredibly stylish girl, there will even be more about her, but this outfit is a miss! Maybe they played a vicious prank on her and sent her an invitation in which the theme of the dress code was the seizure of the planet by aliens? :)))

I often hear odes to Amal Clooney's style. I don't agree! Especially this time.

And I can’t understand how Salma Hayek, having such opportunities (her husband, Francois-Henri Pinault, owner of many famous fashion houses: Yves Saint Laurent, Gucci, is one of the hundred richest people in the world), every time walks unsuccessful looks on red carpets.

Katy Perry overdid it. As usual:)

I believe that the style of actress Sarah Jessica Parker and the style of our favorite movie heroine Carrie Bradshaw should not be confused. Behind the creation of the second image is a team led by the brilliant Hollywood stylist Patricia Field, but the style of SJP herself is a big question. Just look at her new collection of wedding dresses that are poorly made and fit disgustingly even in advertising photos, and a collection of shoes, with the design of that same blue silk shoe with a shiny buckle openly tampered with by Manolo Blannik. Is this even legal?

It seems to me that SJP didn’t cope with the dress for the ball either. Although, of course, it made some noise.

Best Met Gala 2018 Looks

Now I’ll show you whose images I liked the most!

Zendaya in an Atelier Versace dress is fire! It's sad that Donatella Versace, wearing a dress from her own brand, has received anti-ratings.

Amber Heard - everything is perfect here! Starting from an impeccable dress and ending with a halo crown.

It's a pity Beyoncé didn't come! But Rihanna, once again, was cool and good! By the way, everyone who is worried about weight and extra pounds can safely subscribe to Riri and make sure that at any weight you can be just a fiery girl!

Lana del Rey and Jared Leto outshone almost everyone with the help of Gucci. Surely they are now being cursed all over the forums and accused of blasphemy.

Stella Maxwell looked beautiful. I would add accessories to match the theme of the ball, of course.

Winnie Harlow took a chance and won, choosing the bride's outfit not for Halloween, but for the MET GALA. This is a rare lucky break; in addition to Uma Thurman, there were 5-6 other inappropriate “brides” at the ball.

Medge, for once, is on the list of good outfits. Thank you for not being naked!

Livia Firth wore a dress that would look equally at home on any red carpet. And at this event it looked expensive and stylish, neatly consistent with the stated theme - and all because she or her stylist clearly had good taste, but lacked the desire to shock.

Pharrell Williams and his date, both wearing Chanel, were gorgeous. By the way, there were practically no successful outfits for men. The men either ignored the dress code or looked comical and stupid.

Greta Gerwig left me stunned. If she was joking and it's sarcasm, then that's a five. Seriously, the stylist needs to be fired.

To be honest, I liked looking at the outfits not from the ball, but from the after-party!

I’ll show you too, of course! Many shone, performing the theme of the ball in a delicate manner at the party. Only Kendall Jenner screwed up by wearing a beach dress from her mother's youth :)

In general, girls, what a terrible job and enormous stress it is to choose and walk out outfits for these balls, especially considering that secular photographers manage to capture celebrities from the most dubious angles, when even the most successful dress, perfect make-up and hairstyle turn into something that the next morning another stylist will be fired! :))))

The Costume Institute Ball has always been known as an event that not only expands, but breaks boundaries in the fashion world.

The 2018 Costume Institute Ball (aka Met Gala) will begin very soon - on the night of May 8th. The world-famous ball, for which the stars carefully prepare for several months, will be dedicated to the influence of religion on fashion. “Divine Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” is this year's theme. Well, we are waiting for outfits from celebrities to match the stated theme, but for now we are recalling the most memorable Met Gala looks over the past 10 years.

2017: Rihanna

2017: Katy Perry

Last year, Katie surprised everyone with her choice of dress. The singer appeared in front of the paparazzi in a bloody outfit from Maison Margiela.

2017: Priyanka Chopra

The Indian actress chose a long classic Ralph Lauren trench coat for the red carpet.

2016: Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid

Zayn Malik and Gigi Hadid made their debut as a couple at the 2016 Met Gala. The couple played on the theme of the year - new technologies in fashion - with the help of robotic elements in Versace outfits.

2016: Lady Gaga

Before criticizing Gaga, let's remember that the theme of that year's ball was "fashion in the age of technology."

2015: Beyoncé

Pop queen Beyoncé in a translucent gold dress by Givenchy.

2015: Rihanna

Haters can compare RiRi's Guo Pei outfit to Big Bird from Sesame Street, but it's one of the Met Gala's best star looks.

2015: Sarah Jessica Parker

Every year, Parker chooses the most unusual images for the ball, for which he comes under a barrage of criticism. For example, this dress from H&M with a “fire” hat has become an Internet meme.

2014: Lupita Nyong'o

The green mesh, boa, bugle beads and headband from Prada remind us of a Christmas tree.

2013: Kim Kardashian

This Givenchy outfit was nicknamed by fashion critics as a “sofa dress.”

2012: Carey Mulligan

Did the Prada dress turn Carey into a goldfish or a hero?

2011: Gisele Bundchen

Bundchen slayed the red carpet in an Alexander McQueen evening gown.

2010: Mila Kunis

The gray Vera Wang dress made Kunis look like a real princess.

2009: Kate Moss

One of the most spectacular looks of 2009 belonged to Kate Moss. The dress was designed by Marc Jacobs.

2008: David and Victoria Beckham

These images of lovers became the most discussed after the annual Met Gala.

One of the most vibrant and interesting fashion events took place in New York. The world's most famous and famous people gathered at the Metropolitan Museum of Art to show off their fancy, if not fantastic, outfits from leading designers at the 2018 Met Gala.

What is the Met Gala

The annual Met Gala, traditionally held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is the fashion world's largest charity event. The first event was organized by publicist Eleanor Lambert in 1948 for the high society of New York.

In a modern interpretation, the ball each time brings together the most famous people in the fashion, music, cinema and art industries to raise funds for the benefit of the museum. The party is also the opening of a thematic exhibition. In recent years, the hostess of the ball, sending out invitations to guests, choosing the theme of the exhibition and curating the exhibition at the museum, has been Anna Wintour, who every time opens the evening in a Chanel dress. This time it was ivory, emphasizing the blooming appearance and wonderful taste of the famous permanent editor of Vogue.

Annual theme of the ball

Each time a different style is chosen, within which celebrities begin to prepare their luxurious outfits ahead of time from the best couturiers. It is set by the theme of the exhibition: for example, the themes of past years were “The History of Punk Culture: From Chaos and Rebellion to High Fashion” or “China through a Magnifying Glass.”

This year's ball theme

This year, many of the outfits turned out to be quite provocative, since the theme itself is quite controversial and arouses keen interest: “Divine Bodies: Fashion and Imagination in Catholicism.”

Stars' outfits at Met Gala 2018

This year, the stars improvised on the theme of Catholicism, doing it with indescribable irony, chic and fantasy. Amal Clooney was one of the first to appear on the first track, wearing an extravagant outfit from the British brand Richard Quinn: the clothes of this young brand are rapidly gaining popularity all over the world, not least thanks to the shocking corporate style, which in this case turned out to be extremely successful.

Rihanna, in the glitter and radiance of Maison Margiela, seems to have outdone everyone: she very successfully beat the headdress of the head of the Catholics, the Pope. In combination with the legs exposed in the high cut of the dress and a very revealing neckline, it looked very extravagant, but at the same time it was not at all vulgar.

Katy Perry opted for a rather romantic look with huge Versace wings to match her pretty face and gorgeous figure.

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley opted for an almost minimalist yet infinitely elegant halo that paired perfectly with her Ralph Lauren evening gown.

Madonna, to everyone's surprise, did not act out this time, as one might have expected from her - it was the Catholic theme that she played up more than once in the design of scandalous videos and photo shoots. This year she opted for an almost puritanical outfit with a veil.

The theme of this year's Ball was “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” Fans were expecting truly enchanting looks, and the stars did not disappoint. We've selected the 20 most memorable Met Gala 2016 appearances!

Met Gala 2016 Outfits

Solange Knowles chose a somewhat strange outfit, which, according to bloggers, did not at all correspond to the theme of the Ball. Immediately after the singer walked the red carpet, the Internet was filled with memes in which Beyoncé's sister was compared to grooved chips. Definitely not Solange's best outing and one of the worst outfits of the 2016 Met Gala.

Popular

Sarah Jessica Parker very, very surprised not only her fans, but also us: looking at the actress’s outfit, one gets the feeling that she was pulled out to the Met Gala 2016 straight from a run and only had time to replace her shoes and sew on organza cuffs.

It cannot be said that Selena Gomez’s image is one hundred percent consistent with the chosen theme, but it looks really interesting and unexpected for the singer. By the way, it can be considered futuristic - Gomez’s outfit evokes associations with one of the main blockbusters of last year, the film Mad Max.

Taylor Swift looks modern (we cannot help but note that the new hair color suits the singer much better than her previous vaguely blond shade), but the shoes mercilessly “kill” the initially interesting image. And yes, Taylor's dress is begging for accessories.

Rita Ora dressed up as a kind of “iron bird of the future,” but even the relative correspondence of the outfit to the theme of the event did not save the singer from being included in the list of the worst images of the Met Gala 2016 - fashion critics clearly had an overdose of “naked dresses” over the past couple of years. And we understand them perfectly.

Poppy Delevingne clearly opted for the notorious Manus and chose a dress that evokes thoughts of the “roaring 20s”, which at the same time looks completely modern thanks to the girl’s hair color and dark lipstick. We love the model's striking look! This is one of the best outfits from the 2016 Met Gala.

Pregnancy is not a reason to miss the main fashion event of the year, much less choose boring outfits. Olivia Wilde fit perfectly into the theme of the event!

But Nicki Minaj didn’t stress too much when choosing an outfit for the 2016 Met Gala Costume Institute - the singer simply came in her usual look and another “naked dress.” Nicki, just tell your stylist stop!

Naomi Watts easily proves that a futuristic outfit and femininity go together! The actress's spectacular dress perfectly matches the accessories, and the deliberately feminine hairstyle contrasts well with the outfit.

But the image of Miranda Kerr failed on all fronts. Firstly, the model’s outfit looks too casual for the Ball, and secondly, its upper part deforms Kerr in an eerie way, giving the impression that her breasts are located somewhere in the area of the collarbones.

“Futurism is futurism, and exhibitionism is on schedule,” - it seems that Madonna thought something like this, once again choosing a very dubious outfit that was not on topic and at the same time again demonstrating to the audience “buttocks in lace.” How long! (c)

Despite the fact that Lupita's image turned out to be quite controversial, we like it - the actress's futuristic hairstyle fits perfectly into the theme of the Ball, as does her spectacular dress.

We couldn’t help but include Zoe Saldana’s stunningly beautiful dress in our selection - looking at the train of the actress’s outfit is simply breathtaking!

Alicia Vikander chose an uncharacteristic short dress for the Met Gala, but she made the right decision. Her outfit could easily live in the wardrobe of a fashionista of the future!

Lady Gaga's outfit also caused a heated discussion on the Internet, but we hasten to remind you about the theme of the Ball (“...fashion in the era of technology”), to which it fully corresponds. Therefore, the star’s stylist and Gaga herself get an “A” for their serious approach!

But stylist Kristen Stewart, as always, played a cruel joke on the actress, dressing her in yet another dress that “spoiled” the actress: the indistinct length literally “cuts off” the girl’s legs. But the image could be successful if you remove it or, conversely, add 10 centimeters to the hem.

Kim Kardashian, who usually ends up in compilations of the worst looks, is among the favorites this time - the star got it right with her outfit. We can’t help but note how interestingly Kanye West’s image combines with his wife’s outfit (pay attention to the musician’s unusual lenses!). Bravo!

But Kendall Jenner didn’t quite get the look right this time - her dress certainly looks very interesting, but the model clearly lacks accessories.

Katy Perry's image caused no less Internet discussions than Madonna's outfit: many bloggers and fashion critics considered it too dark and much more associated with a theme a la “Gothic” than “...fashion in the age of technology.” However, we cannot but agree that Katie looked very impressive.

Probably, if the Greek goddesses lived in our time, they would look something like Kate Bosworth at the Met Gala 2016 - the actress demonstrated an interesting and memorable image, one of the best at the event.

But Irina Shayk, who often delights the eye with spectacular appearances on the red carpet, this time disappointed not only fashion critics, but also fans - almost everyone without exception considered the supermodel’s outfit not only not entirely appropriate, but also downright vulgar.

Gigi Hadid and her beloved singer Zayn Malik looked like a real couple from the future - great images that fit the declared theme of the Ball!

Robert Pattinson's fiancée, British singer FKA Twigs, again surprised (but also delighted) in an unusual way - the laconic cut of her “nude” dress was balanced with interesting details of the outfit and eye-catching accessories.
