The papier-mâché technique has been popular for a very long time. It is used to create different shapes and figures from mass, where paper is used as a base. Over the long period of existence of this technique, many different recipes have been collected, how to make papier-mâché mixture at home. In this article we will look at options for the most popular and proven papier-mâché recipes used by professional craftsmen. Making such a mass with your own hands is absolutely not difficult and not expensive.
We will need:
Gray toilet paper.
Universal PVA glue (can be used for construction).
Flaxseed oil.
1. First of all, tear the paper into small pieces and put it in a deep bowl.
2. Then fill it with boiling water and leave for a day. All paper should be submerged in water.
3. After the allotted time, wring out the soaked paper. For this, regular gauze or cloth is most often used; this can also be done using a synthetic mesh with a small hole. As a result, the mass should remain a little damp and it is better to squeeze it out in small portions, approximately 100-150 grams.
4. Then grind the squeezed out lumps of paper in small portions in a blender and place them in a free container. This is done so that in the end papier-mâché mass turned out to be more uniform.
Fig.1 Masks made from papier-mâché mass
5. When all the paper has been ground, add universal PVA glue to it in small portions. Approximately one roll of toilet paper requires 200-250 g of glue.
6. Mix everything thoroughly and add linseed oil (1 tablespoon per 1 roll of paper), then re-knead the mixture until it has a homogeneous consistency.
Thanks to linseed oil, the working mass will be much more plastic. From such a mass you can create any shape. It is worth considering that after drying the form decreases in size from 2% to 6%.
Fig.2 Figures made from papier-mâché mass
We will need:
Gray toilet paper.
Universal PVA glue.
Fine-grained putty.
Liquid soap.
The whole sequence of actions is the same as in the first papier-mâché recipe. Only here, after the PVA glue, we add putty (5 tablespoons per 1 roll of toilet paper) and liquid soap (1 tablespoon per roll of paper). Putty is needed to make the mass more plastic, and liquid soap gives additional smoothness to the resulting figures.
Fig.3 Decorations made from papier-mâché paste
We will need:
Water - 1 liter.
Dry wood glue – 500 g.
Thin paper (newspaper) – 250 g.
Natural Drying Oil – 100 g.
Rosin - 20 g.
Fine chalk - 3 kg.
1. First of all, soak the wood glue in water and cook it until a homogeneous mass is formed, without allowing it to boil (see the ratio of water and glue on the packaging).
2. Then we prepare the paper. To do this, chop it into small pieces, add water and cook for about an hour over low heat.
3. After that, let the paper cool to room temperature, and then you need to knead it as much as possible until it becomes homogeneous.
4. Then we are faced with the task of squeezing out all the paper using gauze as best as possible.
5. Add the resulting lumps in small portions to the hot glue and stir.
6. Then add drying oil and crushed rosin.
Fig.4 More masks made from papier-mâché mass
7. Heat the entire papier-mâché mixture over a fire and stir constantly until the rosin is completely dissolved.
8. The resulting mixture must be allowed to cool completely and only after this can you begin to knead it into chalk.
9. To do this, pour a pile of chalk onto a flat surface and make a depression in the center.
10. It is into this that we add cooled glue in small portions.
12. For greater plasticity, add drying oils in small quantities. Papier-mâché mass ready to go.

We will need:
Egg boxes.
Flour paste.
1. Prepare boxes for eggs (you can find interesting ideas for crafts from such boxes in). First of all, they need to be brought to a state where they can be worked with. To do this, tear the boxes into small pieces and pour boiling water over them.
2. Leave it in this state for a day, then change the water and leave it for another day.
3. After the specified time, they should be well soaked, after which they should be squeezed out well using a colander.
5. To the resulting mass we begin to add flour paste, the consistency of which is similar to liquid sour cream, and mix everything thoroughly.
6. In the received papier-mâché mass mix 2-3 tablespoons of flour. The mass should be soft and plastic. This mass is good for making masks.

I have long wanted to try making crafts from papier-mâché. I’ve finally decided.)) Let’s figure out together where to start.
There are several types of papier-mâché crafts:
Papier-mâché using the layering method.
For this technique, it is necessary to have a model, which is pre-lubricated with Vaseline, and then finely torn paper soaked in glue is glued in layers. There should be a lot of layers. All layers are superimposed on each other with natural intermediate drying. Depending on the required thickness and strength, five or more layers are applied. Layered papier-mâché is most often used in the manufacture of carnival masks and round, lightweight hanging forms.
Papier-mâché “Dough Modeling”.
For this technique, you need to tear the paper into small pieces and pour boiling water over it for several hours so that the paper soaks well. Next, the paper is boiled, squeezed and dried. After that, the dried lump is grated and diluted with glue, thoroughly mixing the resulting modeling mass - “dough”. You can sculpt different figures from the mass, like from plasticine, you can pour the mass into a pre-prepared mold, or you can stick it to the base. It all depends on what exactly you are going to do. (There are a lot of “dough” recipes, I wrote another one below.)
Pressed papier-mâché.
Papier-mâché is made by pressing flat cardboard blanks coated with glue. Chipboard is also made using this principle. Pressed papier-mâché is used to form flat structures and individual elements.
Another recipe for papier-mâché mass.
The cheapest gray toilet paper - 2 rolls, liquid PVA glue (construction or universal) - 500 g, linseed oil - 3 tbsp. spoons, water about 1.5 liters. Several large bowls, gauze, PVA glue (Joiner Moment), medium and fine sandpaper.
Step 1. We grind the toilet paper, the smaller the pieces, the better and more uniform the consistency of the future mass will be.
Step 2. Place the shredded paper in a bowl and fill it with water (about 1.5 liters). And pay attention that there are no dry fragments of mass left on the surface. Let the mixture swell for 24 hours.
Step 3. After 24 hours, the mass should be squeezed out. For this we usually use gauze folded several times. We place a handful of wet papier-mâché in the middle of our gauze and close its edges so that the mass ends up in an improvised “bag” and rotate it. There is no need to squeeze out the water completely; a little moisture should remain. Unwrap the “bag” and place the squeezed out lump in a free bowl. We carry out this operation until we have processed all the soaked mass.
Step 4. Add 500 g of PVA construction glue to the mass. It is more effective to mix glue and paper pulp in small batches, so add glue gradually, about 100 g at a time, and mix thoroughly each time.
Step 5. Add 3 tablespoons of flaxseed oil and mix thoroughly. Oil gives the mass additional plasticity.
Step 6. A similar mass of papier-mâché can be placed in a mold or simply sculpted. We usually glue parts of the mass dried in a split form with thick PVA “Moment Joiner”. After the object has completely dried, we modify it with different sandpapers. If necessary, lubricate with the same papier-mâché mixture.
Advice:
Hair dryers, batteries and heaters should not be used to dry papier-mâché; papier-mâché products should only be dried naturally. Otherwise, the product may become deformed or crack.
Regardless of what type of papier-mâché you choose, the dry finished product must be sanded to achieve a smooth surface and remove creases, unevenness and other defects. After sanding, the surface of the craft is primed and then painted, painted or decorated.
I really liked this papier mache craft.
Making a matryoshka doll from a balloon using the papier-mâché technique.
For work we will need: simple white paper napkins, small balloons (I took balloons for water bombs - they don’t need a lot of paint), scissors, a strip of cardboard for a stand, glue-paint (a mixture of PVA glue and water-dispersion paint in equal proportions , yellow napkins for the face and sundress, colored napkins for the scarf.
Let's get to work. We tear white napkins (do not cut them so that the edges are thinner).
We inflate the ball, they are shaped like small pears - just like nesting dolls are. We make a stand from a strip of cardboard.
Then, starting from the wide end, coat the ball with glue and paint and stick on pieces of napkin, making 7-8 layers. We do not cover the tail of the ball. The last layer is to glue the napkin onto both the stand and the ball. The guys handle all the work themselves, with the exception of inflating the balloon; they are very interested in how a nesting doll is made from a balloon and glue.
When the entire ball is coated, set it to dry.
When the balls are dry, you need to take the ball by the tail, cut it and pull it out of the mold. We also cover the hole that appears with a napkin and glue paint.
The preparation is ready! Now let's start with the design. We need to make a face for the nesting doll. You can draw it yourself. You can take any picture of a matryoshka doll on the Internet and transfer it to a light yellow napkin (the color of the wood, the size of the matryoshka’s head. We spread glue on the place on the head where the face should be and put it in place. So our nesting doll opened its eyes! How As soon as children glue a face to the nesting doll, they develop very warm feelings for their toy.
Then we choose a napkin of any color that we like for our beauty’s sundress. Cut out any additions to decorate the sundress. Finally, we cut out the scarf and stick it on the head, making the ends overlap in front, as if we were tying it. For the scarf we used two-layer napkins. Don't forget to remove the bottom layers.
A very accessible lesson for children from 2 years old.
Any waste plastic material is suitable for creating a frame for a craft. Sometimes the shape of a bottle or can will only dictate the idea of a new character, thereby helping the author. And the second necessary material for creating a toy from papier mache is polystyrene foam. From it you can cut out all the small details that need to be added to the jar to create a complete frame for the future character.
For these purposes, it is better to take acrylic art paints; they will have to be applied in several layers since one layer will be visible. Although you can reduce the number of layers by first priming the craft with a white primer, acrylic can be used over it with the effect of a watercolor painting.
We stick the wire tendrils into the craft until the mass of papier-mâché hardens. Eyelashes like this cat on the plane can also be inserted into the mass while it is still wet or glued to the craft when it dries.
Using jars, bottles and other similar debris in papier-mâché products not only saves a lot of material, but also allows you to make cavities into crafts in order to turn a papier-mâché figurine into a box or piggy bank.
Such beautiful characters are born from ordinary toilet paper, thanks to the distinctive imagination and efforts of the artist.
Now we too can feel like artists!))) A little patience, imagination and good mood!!!
DIY crafts are usually associated in our minds with children's creativity. However, now many adults devote their free time to this activity, happily creating interesting and original things. It is this trend that we owe for the renewed interest in the ancient technique of making decorative elements using the papier-mâché technique.

Initially, papier-mâché gifts were only available to aristocrats
The origin of papier-mâché occurred in France. This happened at the end of the 16th century. Translated from the language of the pioneers, this hobby is translated as “torn paper” or “chewed paper.” Initially, dolls were made from paper pulp mixed with glue. Then snuff boxes, music boxes and so on. Nowadays, there are two areas of technology:
They are labor intensive. In the first case, it is enough to prepare the mass and, having given it a shape, dry it well. And in the second - carefully, layer by layer, place strips of paper on a base made of cardboard, wood or plastic. Whatever method you choose, you can make dolls, jewelry, boxes, souvenirs, masks, etc. from papier-mâché.
This is interesting. The huge rotating globe that Harry Potter used in the film of the same name was made by a Scottish craftsman from papier-mâché. Following the success of the Boy Wizard films, the set was auctioned off for $20,000.
Such a girl could be an appropriate gift for the beginning of the school year.
To create a colored item, you need to carefully paint all the details and glue the cat’s whiskers
Unpainted items occupy a special place among crafts made from toilet paper.
Initially, papier-mâché meant making dolls
These cats can be used to decorate a shelf in your closet.
This craft will take about 8-10 hours to dry.
For papier-mâché it is better to use the cheapest toilet paper
For papier-mâché, you can use any paper. But it is most convenient to use:
Let’s look at making crafts based on papier-mâché from toilet paper in detail.
For voluminous crafts, you need a kind of paper dough, which is easiest to prepare from the most useful paper - toilet paper. The convenience of this material is explained by the fact that it soaks well in water. Let's consider several options for preparing papier-mâché mass.
You can prepare the mass for papier-mâché more than once
This amount is enough for 2-3 medium-sized crafts, and making them is a pleasure, as the dough turns out elastic and soft. How long will it take for the finished figures to dry? Approximately 3-4 days. If you doubt your patience, then use a different recipe.
If you add more glue, the material will turn out to be slightly rubbery. This is convenient when making round-shaped crafts. This amount of papier-mâché is enough for 1 medium-sized craft, which will dry in 1-2 days. If you make more of the finished material, don't worry: you can put it in a plastic bag and store it in the refrigerator for about 2 weeks. To work, you will need to heat it in a water bath.
To obtain a mass resembling plasticine or clay, add wallpaper glue to the mixture.
Before starting work, you need to prepare everything you need so as not to be distracted during the process.
Making crafts from paper dough does not require a frame; the creation process is reminiscent of modeling from clay or plasticine.

Master classes on making papier-mâché toys
The papier-mâché technique opens up enormous scope for creativity and allows you to make toys and a piggy bank with your own hands. Thanks to her, old newspapers and papers can be used to create figurines of animals, dolls, and dishes.
You will make such a funny tiger cub if you take:
Prepare the paste. To do this, take a glass of cold water, pour it into the pan, pour 2 tsp here. starch, stir well. Place the container on the fire, stirring frequently, bring the liquid to a boil, and remove from the stove. When the paste has cooled, it is ready for use.
Remove the lid from the jar, turn the container over, and place it on the table. Covering the jar with plasticine, immediately form the ears, eyes, paws, and facial features of the tiger cub. Here's how to make a piggy bank next.
Tear the newspapers into small pieces and start covering the workpiece with them. Attach the first layer with water. The remaining 10 layers need to be fixed by smearing each piece of newspaper with paste.
Leave the workpiece overnight to dry. In the morning, cover it with pieces of white paper, which must be attached using PVA glue, which will give the product strength.
Let the toy dry completely, then cut it into two halves with a utility knife.
Remove these parts from the jar, connect them again, gluing them at the cut site with white pieces of paper greased with PVA.
At the top, use a stationery knife to make a cut of such a size that you can drop coins of the desired denomination into the piggy bank through this hole.
Now go over the outer surface of the piece with white gouache to prime it. When it dries, paint the product in the desired color.
Here's how to make a piggy bank from paper and newspapers. If you want to see how to make a funny pig, which is also designed to store and multiply small items, then check out the second master class.
This is how touching and at the same time funny the pig will turn out to be. To do it, use:
Inflate the balloon and tie it. Tear the newspapers into small pieces and mix the glue in a container with water in a 1:1 ratio. Dip pieces of paper into this mass and attach them to the ball. You need to paste newspapers in several layers.
You can first moisten pieces of newspaper in water, then dip them in PVA, shaping the surface of the ball, and glue torn pieces of paper here.
We make a mass for papier mache; for this, quite large pieces are torn off from toilet paper. Place them in a container to which you need to add PVA. After this, all that remains is to mix the contents well. Now, using a sponge or hands wearing rubber gloves, apply this mixture to the ball covered with newspapers.
When it dries well, make a puncture with a needle. Take out the burst ball through the bottom hole. Cover the gap with two strips of masking tape, which are attached in a crisscross pattern. Legs for a piggy bank can be made from a reel left over from foil or stretch film. These cardboard tubes need to be cut into 4 parts with a knife. If you want, you can use toilet paper rolls.
These blanks need to be attached to the base with masking tape, and papier-mâché paste should also be applied on top.
Make a patch from a piece of foil, attaching it with toothpicks and tape. Cover it with toilet paper soaked in glue and form a nose.
You will need to sculpt eyes from it and attach them in place with glue. Ears can be made from papier-mâché or clay
Now you need to leave the piggy bank so that the papier-mâché dries well. Then we sand the workpiece with sandpaper, after which we apply acrylic putty to it. We wait for it to dry, then wipe the piggy bank with a damp cloth to level the product. Apply putty in several layers until the surface is smooth.
Use a utility knife to make a hole for coins. We attach a tail, which must be made in advance from wire and papier-mâché.
We begin to paint the product. First, apply any dark paint, then, using a sponge, cover it with red.
All that remains is to paint the eyes, after which the papier-mâché piggy bank is ready.
The base is not always simply covered with torn newspapers; there are very interesting recipes for preparing papier mache paste. Meet one of them.
From such a mass you can make a figurine of an animal, for example, a bear. Take:
Finely tear the toilet paper, put it in a bowl, and fill it with water. It should completely cover the paper. Leave the mixture to soak overnight.
Now you need to squeeze out the paper. To do this, place gauze folded in several layers on a colander, put a little mass here, some of the water will drain. Remove the rest by lifting the edges of the gauze and squeezing out the paper. Also squeeze out the rest, but do not dry it out, leave a little water.
Place all this paper in a large bowl, then add construction adhesive. Stir the mass. This will be easier to do if you mix the paper and glue in small portions.
Add flaxseed oil and stir. It will allow the mass to become more plastic. Now you can sculpt from papier-mâché or put this mass into molds to make toy parts. You will glue using PVA, which is called “Moment joiner”.
When the papier-mâché blanks are completely dry within a few days, they will need to be sanded with medium, then fine sandpaper.
The finished product is primed and then painted.
It can also be made from a mass whose recipe you just learned or use another one. This is how the house of this fairy-tale character will turn out.
But for this you need to work hard, but first prepare:
Cover the bottle with napkins using PVA glue. Using a pencil and a ruler, mark the logs, doors, and windows on it.
Starting from the bottom, papier-mâché paste is glued in strips. Decorate both sides at once, forming circles in the form of log cuts.
Using a stack, make stripes on doors and logs so that they convey the texture of wood.
Make smaller details of the door.
Let the house dry for 24 hours.
Make a window and shutters from papier-mâché mixture. Using a stack, decorate them with carvings. We begin to make the attic, in the photo it is pink.
Such elements need to be made above the window and above the door, then we design the roof.
Having made a row on one side and the other, leave it to dry, only after that make another tier.
Then complete the third row and pipe.
Use a stack to create a brick pattern here, then give these elements a roundness.
There will be another row at the top of the pipe. Then we decorate the wall with fly agarics made of polymer clay.
Leave the house to dry completely. After that you need to paint it.
Baba Yaga's hut is ready.
I can’t even believe that such wonderful works of art can be created from toilet paper.
To make such a Snow Maiden, take:
Take an empty bottle and wrap a wire around the neck.
Cut a piece of wire with pliers and wrap it around the neck to make the arms of a papier-mâché doll.
Moisten the elastic bandage with rubber glue and wrap it around the workpiece.
Now grease this bandage on top with PVA glue, attach papier-mâché here, forming the chest and back of the doll.
Make a head for her from the same mass.
To use less papier-mâché, you can first wrap the top wire with foil, then cover it with this mass, forming facial features and ears.
Leave the workpiece to dry completely, then sand it and apply putty. After it dries, it also needs to be treated with sandpaper.
To make hands, moisten cotton wool with an aqueous solution of PVA glue and apply it to the wire. Wrap with an elastic bandage or strip of fabric soaked in glue. Make brushes from polymer clay. Paint the doll using flesh color, mark the eyes, eyebrows, lips with appropriate shades.
Sew a petticoat and a dress for the doll, and make a kokoshnik from cardboard. By unraveling a brown satin ribbon, you will get such luxurious shiny hair. It will take a lot of time to make such a papier-mâché doll, but the materials will cost little, and what a luxurious result awaits you!
If you want to get acquainted with another example, then watch the second master class in this section.
You will get such a wonderful doll on a horse. To make this duet you will need:
Cover the ball with several layers of newspaper. If you don’t have such a ball, then you can twist this figure from just newspapers. Place the head blank on a piece of wire so that it is in the middle. Bend the edges of the wire down. Wrap the hero's legs separately with newspapers soaked in liquid PVA, then cover the wire above this place with them, connecting both edges.
Give the doll the desired shape by covering it with papier-mâché.
Let's make a horse. Bend the wire as in the photo and wrap it with foil.
Coat this blank with papier-mâché mixture.
When it is thoroughly dry, stick two pieces of wire into it to make the legs of the animal.
Cover the top of the piece with damp papier-mâché. Let the horse dry thoroughly. Now we need to add volume to both blanks; for this we also use papier mache, including to make the ears and nose of the prince. We make the horse’s ears from cardboard, cutting out parts of the appropriate shape. Sand the workpieces.
Trim the excess wire on the animal's legs, add a mane, tail, and muscles to the prince. Cut a strip with zigzag edges from cardboard, cover it with newspapers, and roll it into a crown. Cover with papier-mâché.
Apply the same mixture on top in 4 places of the cart to attach the horse.
Sand the workpieces, then paint them.
Let's create them using the same papier-mâché technique. If you want these funny hedgehogs on your Christmas tree, then start creative work right now.
To create them, you will also need materials that do not need to be purchased - the savings are obvious. Take:
At the top, fold the cardboard over sleeves 1 and 2. Place cotton pads greased with PVA here, make a cone out of them, stick them in with a wooden skewer.
Disassemble the cones into scales, glue them on one side of the roll, as well as on the sides. Form rows starting from the bottom, arranging the elements of subsequent rows in a checkerboard pattern. Use Titan glue for this.
At the beginning of the article, you read how to make papier mache paste from toilet paper. You can use other similar materials, such as paper towels. In this master class, yellow napkins were used for this purpose; their color does not matter. Form the body and nose of a hedgehog from such a mass.
Let it dry, make the front legs, attach them to the tummy, using the same mass. Here are some interesting crafts for the New Year 2017. But for now we need to let our hedgehogs dry well, then cover the arms and tummy with beige, and then brown. We paint the animal spines in the reverse order - first we use a brown tone, then beige or white. Then the hedgehog’s coat will look like it’s dusted with snow.
Make eyes, eyebrows, mouth, nose out of plasticine, sculpt a mushroom, attach it between the animal’s arms.
If you want, you can make lower legs for the animal from plasticine or plastic, placing them on the ends of the laces, the middle of which is threaded through the upper hole. You can attach a bell so that when the hedgehog moves, it makes interesting sounds.
These are the most wonderful and interesting crafts you can make for the New Year.
Make them with your children. If it’s difficult for the kids to do this, then tell them an interesting idea for creating papier-mâché cakes, which they will be happy to bring to life. Let the child make these as a New Year's treat for his dolls and toys.
To do this, place next to it:
Cover the table with newspapers in advance and cover it with plastic wrap. Then the child will not stain the work surface.
Let him tear or cut the newspapers into small pieces and put them in a separate container. In the other you need to pour the paste. It is prepared like this: pour a glass of water into a saucepan, add 2 tsp. flour or starch, mix. Place on the fire and bring to a vigorous boil while stirring vigorously. Let the paste cool and pour it into a bowl.
Let your child roll the foil into balls.
You need to make a box from a sheet of cardboard. Look at the diagram to see how to cut its sides, fold them, and glue them.
Everything is ready, it’s time to start making crafts for the New Year with your own hands, the photo will show how to make it.
Everything you need is on the table. Let the child dip the lumps in the foil in the paste, then attach pieces of paper here.
Then you need to leave the craft for several days so that the glue dries well. If this is not done, the work may begin to mold.
When the cakes are well dry, let the child give free rein to his imagination. Using paints, small red pompoms, and finely chopped colored pieces of paper, you can make this festive treat for dolls.
Once the paint is dry, it’s time to arrange these cakes to decorate the toy table.
Using the same technique, you can make other children's crafts for the New Year. With their own hands they will construct blanks from foil, which must be covered with pieces of newspaper. This process has just been described. To attach the toy to the Christmas tree, at this stage you need to tie a carpet ring with a lace or rope, as was done in the photo tip.
Now you can make dolls from papier-mâché, New Year's toys from the same material, and a piggy bank. We invite you to familiarize yourself with the process of making an apple. It turns out so realistic that you should immediately warn both guests and family that the fruit is not edible.
If you want to see how to make papier mache paste, then watch the second story.
When making crafts, it is also important to remember that you should not immediately take on products with many small parts; it is better to start with something simpler in order to get used to the technology of creating original gizmos using the ancient papier-mâché technique.
Only a lazy person who has never been to preschool institutions does not know what papier-mâché is. From childhood, kindergartens teach how to make plates, cups, and vases from paper. But if for some reason you missed this lesson, then we suggest you find out right now how to make papier-mâché at home.
It's hard to believe, but this set is made of paper. Of course, you can’t drink tea from it, but such crafts can be an excellent decor for your home or an entertaining toy for a child. Children really like to make various objects from paper, and since the papier-mâché technique is very simple, you can create similar crafts together with your kids.
What do we need:
There are two ways to make papier-mâché:
For the first method, you need to tear the paper into pieces. Prepare the surface on which the material will be glued. If the model needs to be removed, it is best to coat the surface with Vaseline or cream.
The paper should be soft. Cardboard is not suitable for papier-mâché.
Next comes simple, monotonous work: apply glue, put pieces of paper on top so that they completely cover the surface of the selected object. After making two layers, let the layout dry. Then we repeat.
Each piece should be in contact with its neighbors so that there are no gaps. And dry it again. The total complexity of layers is from 8 to 10.
Important! To avoid getting confused when counting layers, you can alternate colored and white paper. But the last layer should be white if you continue to paint your craft.
Papier-mâché takes at least 48 hours to dry. But there is no need to try to speed up this process by placing the craft in a hot place or on a battery.
Important! At high temperatures, papier-mâché will develop cracks.
Place the torn or cut paper in a deep bowl. Add water and mix using a mixer. It should be a thick paste.
Important! To make the mixture without a mixer, fill the paper with hot water and let it sit for about 2-3 hours. After this, knead until smooth.
After this, strain the remaining water through a sieve. Add glue and paste to the paper. Knead until the mixture sticks to your hands.
Not only cups and plates are made from papier-mâché. Here is a clear example of what can be done using regular paper and glue.
To make a helmet we need:
First, prepare some pieces of paper. They must be different sizes.
Make sure there is enough material for the first 2 layers. Then, while the layout dries, you can prepare the paper for subsequent layers.
Important! If you dilute PVA with water, the paper will be better saturated, but it will take a long time to dry. If you don't thin it, you'll need more glue, but the papier-mâché will dry less quickly and won't soak as much.
Now we need a mock-up of the helmet, which will serve as a form for papier-mâché.
Apply glue to the required area and apply pieces of paper, slightly overlapping the edges with each other. We do this until the entire surface is filled. After 2 layers, let the craft dry.
You can alternate newspaper and toilet paper.
To smooth out dents you need to use the smallest pieces of paper. They are poured with glue and mixed well until it becomes a paste.
Using your fingers, cover all uneven areas with a thin layer. After this, let the layout dry thoroughly.
After complete drying, lubricate the entire craft with this mixture.
For final leveling, coat the entire surface with acrylic relief paste.
A cheap and durable material from which you can create any three-dimensional compositions at home is papier-mâché. In French, papier means “paper” and mache means “ground, chewed, compressed.” The literal translation accurately conveys the technology used to create the material.
The sculpture is created in two ways: increasing volume or cutting off volume. To increase the volume, you need to successively add layers of paper soaked in glue. To cut off the volume, you first need to form a shape from a viscous and plastic mass, into which paper turns when mixed with water and glue.
What paper is suitable for making papier-mâché with your own hands?:
Before starting the process, you need to decide what technique the product will be created in.:
Before realizing your idea, you need to make a sketch and decide how to make papier-mâché: by modeling or mashing. A sketch will help you avoid mistakes, determine the technique and work out the image in detail.
The sketch can be approximate, not detailed. It is important to indicate the proportions and approximate dimensions of the product.
Masching is a meditative activity that takes place in stages and sequentially. Haste can ruin the product, so you should prepare yourself for measured work.
MK using this papier-mâché technique:
The technique for performing the work is very simple, it is easy to do it yourself if you have patience. The paper is applied layer by layer, the glue is distributed with a large brush. You need to dry the layers either until dry or semi-dry.
After completing the volume expansion, the product should be left for 2 days. It will not dry quickly at room temperature.
How can I speed up the process?:
Some craftsmen claim that the product may crack when heated. This is not true. To test from personal experience how a sculpture reacts to temperature, you can make a very small piece and place it in the oven. If the glue composition tolerates heat well, then dry it in the oven. If any defects arise, dry most of the work at room temperature.
How to make papier-mâché smooth after drying:
If you make a large and simple figure from papier-mâché with your own hands, for example, a stump for a summer house, coarse sandpaper is used to speed up the process.
If the figure is small and detailed, for example flowers or fruits, you should immediately use fine sandpaper.
If the sculpture needs to be separated from the frame form, you need to lubricate the form with Vaseline or any greasy cream before gluing. Conventional cling film is also used to process the mold. It is wrapped tightly around the frame so that there is no air gap left. Then the papier-mâché is removed along with the film.
The adhesive tape resists glue well; the smooth texture of the adhesive tape will protect the form from adhesion to papier-mâché. Taping is done in pieces, without gaps.
The machining technique makes it possible to create thin and durable things. If the work is more complete, without small details, it is more profitable to use modeling.
To prepare the mixture for modeling, you will need:
To make the mixture durable, wallpaper glue or PVA glue is added to it. To make the mixture plastic, you need to prepare a paste.
For paste:
You can use starch paste.
Making a sculpture from a modeling mixture:
The mass must be flexible enough to hold its shape. You can dry it at room temperature, and if it doesn’t crack, then in the oven at 50-100 degrees.
High-quality drying and compliance with proportions are a necessary condition for obtaining beautiful and neat work. During drying, the product should not be moved, touched or poked with sharp objects to check readiness. Wet papier-mâché should not be dropped or squeezed. Drying should be done in rooms where children and pets do not run around, which could accidentally damage the product.
In order to be able to transfer the sculpture from the desktop to where it will dry, you need to immediately create it on glass, a tray or a board.
If, by an unfortunate accident, some part of the papier-mâché has separated or the product has broken, you should dry everything until ready, then glue and sand the defects at the joint. You can increase the volume and restore a sculpture that has been injured.
The material has a wide range of applications and is used to create any round or flat sculpture, high relief or bas-relief, and stucco decorations.
Application of papier-mâché:
After the product has dried, it is sanded, primed, and then coated with acrylic. Acrylic is the best paint for papier-mâché, which creates a protective film.
You can finish the job by applying glossy or matte acrylic varnish, with a brush or spray can.
