Each of us has several pairs of old jeans that have become unusable - frayed, torn, small or out of fashion. You won’t go to work or visit in these anymore, and it’s inconvenient to work in the garden or around the house, and for some reason it’s a shame to throw them away... There’s a great idea - you can sew a lot of useful things from old jeans, for example, a stylish and comfortable backpack!
We will try to select the easiest options to implement that even a beginner in sewing will be able to do. Take old jeans and tailor's scissors, and we will explain all the other subtleties in detail in the instructions.
Old jeans and sharp tailoring scissors are what you need to get started.
A housewife who is passionate about handicrafts, in addition to old jeans, has enough scraps of other fabrics that keep piling up, and she can’t get around to throwing them away. This is the kind of backpack you can use them on.

This is such a funny backpack that both adults and teenagers will be delighted with!
This backpack is so simple that you won't need a pattern. It is made in the form of a simple “bag”, and only a few steps need to be described in more detail.
You will need:
A simple backpack option
Thread a string through the pins to tighten the top of the backpack.
Belt fabric straps with sewn overlays
Backpack flap trim option
If the jeans used for such a backpack have many pockets, then they can be used as decoration and at the same time - places for various small things.
For children of any age, it is important that their things are bright and speak about the hobbies of their little owners. A backpack is simply a necessary accessory for a child: it is comfortable, roomy, and mobile. And old jeans are perfect for using all your imagination and sewing such an attribute for your tomboy or little princess.
Fun funny backpack for a child
For such a cute backpack you will need:
Please note: the pattern of such a backpack is made from jeans of one color, a different color will be needed for finishing.
The following parts will be required:
All parts must be overlaid so that the edges do not fray later. If you want the product to have a fashionable terry edging, you can do without processing the edges.
That's it, work on the backpack is finished.
This backpack is perfect for an active child who often attends sports clubs. It is voluminous enough to fold sportswear and other small items, but at the same time it is light and does not look bulky.

Denim is a great versatile material. A backpack made of such fabric is original in itself, and if it is made from old jeans, which have pockets, labels, and other trim, then we can safely say: it is exclusive.
I don’t know how it is in Russia, but in Japan, in order to send a child to kindergarten for the first time, the mother needs to prepare herself for several sleepless nights. In addition to preparing the material for handicrafts and forms, you need to sew several handbags for different purposes with your own hands (it is advisable to sew them with your own hands, this is the custom. And then mothers will look appreciatively at each other’s “handmades”):
A backpack for everyday things (the child will take it to kindergarten every day): it contains a diary (yes, yes, exactly a diary, where the mother reports every day about what time the child went to bed and got up in the morning, what time he had dinner and breakfast, his well-being , who will pick up the child from kindergarten today and what time, etc.), a mug and cutlery, a swimsuit for the pool, a hand towel, a cap for walks. And also: A 35x45 cm bag for albums, paints and pencils, a bag for a change of shoes, a bag for a change of clothes for a child, a bag for a children’s mug and cutlery.
To combine, I selected several thin but dense linen fabrics of the same shade with different patterns and a plain quilted fabric for the lining.
1. Cut out the details of a children's backpack:
Details (the indicated dimensions already include seam allowances (1 cm on each side)): Burlap (front part) 41 x 32 cm - 2 pieces, Lining 34 x 32 cm - 2 pieces, Belt belts 7 x 10 cm - 2 pieces , Backpack straps - 8 x 108 cm - 2 pieces (I didn’t have enough length of fabric for the straps, so I cut out 4 pieces 54 cm in length). You will also need a strong, wide braid (3.5 cm wide) for the handle (about 15 cm).
2. Prepare the details of the patch pockets:
On the inner pocket, fold it twice and sew the top edge. On the outer pocket we will also process the top of the pocket and make beautiful embroidery. You can glue beautiful thermal applications; the choice in stores is now very large. I borrowed these cute owls for decoration from this site -
3. We adjust the pockets to the details of the backpack along the outer edge (3 sides).
4. Preparing the details of the straps and belt loops:
We sew the parts folded in half along the edge along and across on one side - at a distance of 1 cm from the edge. Iron the seam allowances. Turn it right side out and iron it. I'm used to turning it out using a long, thin knitting needle.
5. We sew belt loops, folded in two, onto the burlap fabric on the left and right:
6. We begin to sew the parts into a common stocking - lengthwise: We sew the parts of the lining and the main burlap along the short sides. We iron the seams. We sew a rigid braid (the handle of our backpack) into the seam of the lining and the back of the burlap.
7. Now you can sew the sides:
Leave 7 cm unstitched on each longitudinal side at the junction of the lining and the main burlap (burlap side), then press the seams and stitch the unstitched areas around the perimeter. Do not finish sewing the middle of the bottom seam near the lining yet; through it you can turn the product to the right side. Sew the corners of the product diagonally to add volume.
8. Turn the product right side out through the bottom seam of the lining that remains unsewn. Now this area can be sewn up by machine or by hand.
9. We put the lining inside the backpack so that the front part of the burlap at the top also goes inward a little (by 3.5 cm). And we sew a line along the top edge of the backpack just at a distance of 3.5 cm from the top fold.
10. We insert our straps into the drawstrings of the front and back of the backpack, thread them into the loops from below and tie them with a knot. Our backpack is ready!

According to the author. My niece is 4 years old. And, like any young lady, she wants to change her image depending on the situation and mood. She has handbags, but no backpack for going to sports dances. Well, we decided to make a backpack with voluminous decor. Moreover, each element is an independent brooch :) Therefore, when she wants, she pins it on a backpack, and if her mood changes, then on a scarf or hat.
Backpack dimensions (WxHxD): 18x25x13 cm.
And here is the process itself!
Materials and tools:
For decoration:
1. Preparation of tissues. Cut.
Print or translate the pattern for the outer wall of the backpack (when removing the pattern, check the scale of the 1cmx1cm square). From the main fabric and the lining fabric, cut out two pieces each according to the pattern. Glue the parts made from the main fabric on the wrong side with voluminous or rigid interlining. Cover the lining fabric parts with thin interlining. Mark the midpoints of the sides on all
From the main and lining fabric, cut out one piece each for the bottom with side parts measuring 15 cm x 54 cm.
And two fastening pieces each from the main and lining fabrics measuring 7.5 cm x 32 cm. On the strips, make marks in the middle of the long sides.
For the outer open pocket of the backpack, cut out one piece each from the main and lining fabric (the pattern for the pocket is the shaded area on the first pattern). Glue the main fabric piece with double tape and make a mark in the middle of the bottom side of the pocket.
For the inner pocket, make a pattern yourself of any shape. You can make a square pocket, an oval pocket like mine, or with a zipper.
2. Pockets.
Place the outer pocket pieces right sides together and stitch along the long top edge. Turn out the part. Fold along the seam and press.
Fold the inner pocket pieces right sides together and stitch along the perimeter, leaving room to turn them inside out. Turn the part inside out and iron it.
3. Donyshko.
Cut out a felt bottom measuring 20 cm x 14 cm. Fold the felt and main fabric piece and quilt. For convenience, you can glue the felt to the main fabric using adhesive web.
Mark the middle of the sides of the bottom.
4. Internal pocket.
Place the pocket in the center of the lining piece, pin it together and sew it on.
5. Lining.
Iron each part of the strip along the long side 0.5 cm inward. This will be needed later for assembling the backpack with lining and stitching along the zipper.
Place the plank parts side by side, ironed side inward, and stitch the bottom part on both sides. Important - the distance between the slats should be 1cm.
Turn the part inside out and iron it.
Assembling the inside of the backpack. Using pins, pin the parts together, aligning the marks of the middle of the sides. Make small notches in semicircular areas. Stitch around the entire perimeter.
6. Straps.
From a plain fabric, cut out two pieces measuring 12x6 cm (since the diameter of the half rings is 1.5 cm). Fold each piece in half, matching the long sides of the pieces, and iron. Iron the long sides of each piece towards the center.
Sew along the long sides. Fold the piece in half with the short side and thread two half rings into each. To prevent the rings from dangling, secure them with a stitch.
From the main fabric, cut out two main outer parts of the straps measuring 30x5 cm and two inner parts of the straps measuring 30x5 cm.
Using an iron, glue the outer parts of the straps from the wrong side with thin adhesive interlining. From the front side along the short side, sew the parts with half rings.
Place the outer and inner main parts of the straps with right sides facing each other, pin and stitch all sides except the free short side (for turning). Turn the straps inside out, iron and stitch along the edge.
For the second part of the straps (the one that will adjust the length of the strap), you will need two pieces of belt tape 15 cm long. Pass these parts of the straps through the half rings.
To make the handle, take a piece of belt tape 20 cm long.
7. The outer part of the backpack.
By analogy with point 5, make a zipper from the main fabric. Place the strips over the zipper and stitch the zipper using a zipper foot. Press the seams. On the front side, stitch along the zipper on both sides.
Now stitch the fastener to the bottom. Turn the seams inside out and press them.
Pin a handle folded in half to the upper cut of the back wall strictly in the center and the straps close to it with the inside facing the wall. Stitch over the handle and straps.
