Artichoke style ball made of satin ribbons. Paper artichoke

March 8

The artichoke technique is a type of patchwork. This type of handicraft owes its original name to the shape of the products that are made using this technique - in appearance they are very reminiscent of the artichoke plant. In addition, the artichoke technique is often called by other names: rounds, cloves, scales, feathers, corners. Since the essence of the artichoke technique consists of cutting, bending and folding paper or fabric, resulting in three-dimensional objects, it has much in common with the origami patchwork technique and 3D technique.

Depending on what material is used in the artichoke technique - fabric or paper - the technology for creating the craft depends. To work, you will also need a blank; most often, a figurine in the form of a foam ball is used for this. Small squares or rectangles are cut from paper or fabric, which need to be folded several times. In order to attach the parts to the base, paper blanks are glued, and fabric blanks should be sewn.

You can attach the blanks to the foam base in different ways. To create a flatter model, the workpieces are directed to the center of the main part, or to its edges. If you want to get a three-dimensional composition as a result, then the blanks should be glued or sewn, pointing the tip towards the narrower part.

The artichoke technique is often used to make Christmas tree decorations, valentines, and Easter eggs.

To work with the artichoke technique, you need to prepare the following: tools and materials: colored paper, pencil, ruler, scissors, glue, double-sided tape, pins without a head and with a decorative head.

The procedure for using the artichoke technique.

Cut a rectangle out of paper corresponding to 5 x 2.5 cm, for example. Determine the middle of the rectangle. Fold the top two corners of the rectangle down toward the center. The pins show how to attach the paper to the base.

If we are decorating a ball or an Easter egg, for example, then select the center and tightly glue the triangles using double-sided tape.

Then we attach the next row of triangles. So we continue to the center of the ball. We also decorate the opposite side of the ball. Cover the joints of the triangles in the center of the ball with a strip of paper.

A beautiful decorative panel made in the shape of a star using the artichoke technique

Using this technique, you can create not only decorative panels, but also much larger creations (pillow covers, blankets, rugs, etc.), as well as more miniature products - Christmas balls, wreaths, fruits.

Needlewomen have come up with several ways to fold the scraps shaped like a corner and one or the other is used depending on the quantity and quality of the fabric, but in any case it is advisable to use fabric of the same thickness in one product.

Method 1- for thin fabrics. Cut into squares measuring 6x6 cm or 7x7 cm.

Each is folded diagonally with the wrong side inward and ironed. The resulting triangles are folded in half and ironed again - corners are formed from fabric in 4 folds.

Method 2- also for thin fabrics.

If you need to show a vertical line where the sides join on a corner, then a square of fabric (6x6 cm or 7x7 cm) is first folded in half horizontally, inside out, and then folded with a corner.

Method 3- for thick fabrics. This method is also used if there is very little fabric.

Cut rectangular patches measuring 4x6 cm or 5x7 cm, bend one of the long sides to the wrong side 0.7-1 cm, smooth it, turn the corners to the middle line of the patch and smooth it.

The result was a corner made of fabric in 2 folds.

Method 4- for any non-flowing fabrics. The corners made in this way are sharper and resemble bird feathers.

The fabric is cut according to a template in the shape of a semicircle (diameter 5-7 cm), folded to the midline, folded in half lengthwise and ironed. The result is a corner with 4 folds.

How to sew corners. First, prepare a base of dense fabric, which should repeat the shape of the product (square, round, toy pattern).

Place the finished corners on the base, pinning them with pins (do not sweep them with threads).

In this case, the corners can only touch each other, overlap each other or fit into one another. Having laid one row of corners, they are attached, departing from the base by 1 cm (it is convenient to use the foot for sewing on a “zipper”).

For strength, the same line is sometimes stitched again in a zigzag pattern. Next, lay the next row of corners, placing them in a checkerboard pattern in relation to the previous ones or one under the other, trying to hide the stitching of the sewn row under them. Each stitched row is ironed well.

The easiest way is to sew the corners along straight lines. Start working from the bottom edge and then sew row by row, moving forward.

Moreover, this technique is very versatile - it pleases not only with the variety of shapes and sizes, but also with a wide selection of materials used, colors and shapes.

Another way to use the artichoke technique, using strips of fabric:

How to make a fabric ball Photo

We previously wrote about creating something similar, but then a foam ball was used as the base. Today we present to your attention an excellent master class on creating a completely textile ball with your own hands from scratch.

To create a fabric ball using the artichoke technique you will need:

Fabric for base;

Template paper + pencil;

Needle + thread, sewing machine;

Stuffing (sintepon/cotton wool).

To decorate the fabric ball:

For the lining there are two red squares, 8 beige squares measuring 5*5 cm, 16 squares of the same size, but of a different color (in this case with green stars), 16 squares of a third color.

Beads for decoration.

Artichoke fabric ball step by step:

1. Creating a fabric ball - the base.

Prepare a pattern from paper (Figure 1). Transfer to the fabric from the wrong side (Fig. 2). You will need to create 4 petals. Cut, remember to leave a seam allowance (Figure 3). Sweep the petals together in pairs (Figure 4-5).

Machine stitch on one side (Figure 6). As a result, you will get “pockets”, as in Fig. 7. Fold them together with the front sides (Fig. 8-9).

Sweep or pin. Then we grind it down (Fig. 10-11). Leave a hole on one edge of each petal through which the future ball will turn out and be stuffed (Fig. 12-13).

Fill the ball with filler and then sew it with a hidden seam (Fig. 14-15). As a result, you will get a ball, as in Fig. 16.

2. Ball decoration:

Take all the squares for decoration (except for those for lining), fold in half and iron (Fig. 18).

Place the squares intended for lining in the middle of the ball and pin them with pins so that they do not fidget (Fig. 19).

Then take the ironed beige squares (rectangles) and fold them into triangles (Figure 20-21).

Place such a triangle in the middle of the future fabric ball, as shown in Fig. 22 and pin it with pins.

Pin the 4th triangles and get a blank, as in Fig. 23. Start sewing the corners of the triangles. Sew opposite corners of some triangles (Fig. 24), and then others (Fig. 25).

Sew a bead for beauty at the junction (Fig. 26). Bring the needle under the triangles, as shown in Fig. 27. And carefully sew the triangles along the edge to the base of the ball (Fig. 28).

As a result, you will get something like in Fig. 29. Do the same with rectangles with asterisks. First, fold them in the form of triangles, and then put them on the ball and pin them with pins. Place the triangles in the proper order (Figure 30-31). Sew similarly to the previous steps (Fig. 32-34).

Apply triangles of the third color (Fig. 35-38).

As a result, you will get a half of the ball like this (Fig. 39), make the second one by analogy.

A special feature of the artichoke patchwork technique is the patching of product parts cut from various materials in a certain sequence. Most often, the elements are made in the form of squares from satin ribbons, brocade or cotton fabric, and then folded into triangles. Beads, sequins and lacing are used for decoration. Patchwork in this style is usually used to decorate unbreakable Christmas tree decorations.

The “artichoke” technique looks very unusual and raises a lot of questions about the technology of its production among inexperienced needlewomen and people not involved in sewing. In fact, even a beginner will not need any special skills to create such a toy. The product can be sewn in half an hour using regular patchwork tools. It’s enough to buy or find colorful scraps in the house and add a bit of imagination.

Artichoke balls: master class

Let's try to create a simple Christmas tree toy using a foam blank and three types of fabric.

To work we will need:

  • shreds of three colors;
  • spherical foam blank with a diameter of 8 cm;
  • pins with a flat head;
  • centimeter;
  • small scissors;
  • glue stick;
  • ribbons for decoration;
  • lighter for singeing ribbons;
  • washable marker.

At the first stage, you need to mark the foam blank with a marker so that the shreds lie flat and are not skewed. The ball itself will have a stripe in the middle; it should be highlighted to make it easier to navigate. Then we find the poles, marking them with pins. This can be done by marking any place on the drawn line and then placing a nail on the opposite side: measure the circumference with a centimeter and divide the distance in half. You will need to draw a few more lines to divide the ball into 8 parts.

Fabric preparation

We cut the material into square pieces ranging in size from 7 to 8 cm. The first layer will need 10 pieces, the second and third - 16 each. It is advisable to immediately fold the pieces of fabric 4 times and iron them. Then the edges and center will be clearly visible, and folding the workpieces will become easier. Take a nail and place it in the center of the piece on the front side. We take out one of the pins on the pole and attach the first piece there. We smooth it out and stretch it slightly so that the material “grips” the workpiece, after which we secure the edges with pins, sequentially moving to opposite sides. The curves of the fabric should coincide with the lines drawn with a marker. There is no need to be afraid that the markings will be noticeable after finishing work - even if this happens, the marker can be easily dissolved by sprinkling with water.

Making cloves

Let's start forming scraps for our ball using the artichoke technique: take the fabric, unfold it and pierce it with a pin from the wrong side in the center. The hat should hold the material, and the tip should come out. We remove the fastening on the workpiece and, folding the piece in half, place it near the center. We press, fold the upper edges towards the middle, forming an even triangle, and secure. To make it even, we focus on the drawn lines. For symmetry, go to the opposite side and repeat all the steps, forming a corner. We make two more cloves, filling the remaining sides with them. We make sure that all the lines match. Now you need to secure the ends of the triangles: put the adjacent ones on top of each other and secure them with pins. Turn the ball over and attach the first layer on the other side.

Apply a second layer

At the next stage of creating a New Year's ball using the artichoke technique, we take another type of fabric and insert a new piece between the teeth of the first layer. We do this using a centimeter, measuring 1.5 cm from the center in advance and marking the attachment points with pins. Make sure that the fold is a continuation of the line on the first layer. Next, we fix the flap again on the opposite side, repeating all the previous steps. For the second layer you will need 2 times more “teeth”. Mark 1.5 cm on the remaining lines and pin the triangles.

Making the third layer

It remains to use the last type of fabric for our toy using the artichoke technique. Again we retreat 1.5 cm from the bottom row of cloves. We repeat all the steps in the same way as on the second layer. We attach the shreds on both sides of the foam blank. When all the triangles are assembled, all that remains is to close the seam in the middle of the ball. To do this, you can use fabric that matches the last layer. We remove all protruding threads in advance. We cut out a strip of material approximately 27 cm long and 3.5 cm wide. We tuck the edges and secure them with a glue stick, wrapping the ball with a slight stretch, and then fix it with pins. You can decorate the product with ribbon bows and other elements, using them as fastenings. A stylish and spectacular Christmas ball using the artichoke technique is ready. Such a toy will never break and will decorate your home for many years to come.

Complexity: below average
Working hours: 1 hour

This year we fell ill with artichokes - or rather, the “artichoke” technique. We absolutely loved the Christmas balls made using this scrap technique. But the shreds need to be cut and ironed))) Therefore, we are all for ready-made ribbons of all kinds. This master class is for those who are not yet hooked on artichokes)), and for whom this technique will be something new, and for those who are looking for something ELSE)) to do with their children. Join us, it’s a very creative, meditative activity, perfect to while away the long winter evenings.

What we need are foam balls, ribbons, tailor's needles (lots, lots, lots).

Our first ball was 7 cm in diameter and we had 2 beige and chocolate colored ribbons, 3 meters each. Back to back was enough. We concluded: for balls with a diameter of 8-10 mm, you need a total of about 6.5 meters of tape. We made our first ball from a satin ribbon 16 mm wide. Subsequently, experience showed that for balls 8-10 cm in diameter, tapes 16-20 mm wide are the most optimal. (You will see further - so that the studs are not visible and overlap the “seams”).

The tape is cut into pieces of 3-4 cm. We cut it in advance, each piece is folded and attached separately.

So, we look for the center of the ball and fasten a piece with needles like this:

And with the help of two needles we attach it to the ball, with the tip of the triangle to the middle of the ball:

In the first row we get 4 triangles. In the second row we attach the triangles in a checkerboard pattern:

And this is the next row:

And the next one:

I think you already understand what the “fun” is))). Then we fasten our triangles like this until the very end... The end of the ball.

I don’t think it’s necessary to say that we try to fold the triangles evenly and attach them, carefully overlapping them so that the needle heads are not visible. My daughter did it, but I try not to interfere when the child is doing it, so as not to discourage the last desire to do something)))). The task was dreary and I thought it would quickly cool down and I would have a blast with the balls myself))), but that was not the case - she finished the entire ball, I was given the command to take pictures. Moreover, after that she proceeded to the next one. In general, I have a restless child, so here is the solution to the problem)))).

This is how we safely approach the end of the ball and in the last row the ball is neatly closed. It should have been carefully closed for us, but out of ignorance we took 3 meters of each tape. And at this point, our entire tape ran out. But we had the most beautiful thin velvet braid, with which we successfully decorated the ball and made a loop to hang on the tree. (Everyone also pinned needles to the ball).

Then our hands and imagination could no longer be stopped. We took smaller balls - 4 cm in diameter and narrow Christmas ribbons - 7 mm wide. We had them in 3 colors. And we decided to try to distribute the colors differently:

At first I thought that I would make these balls from a satin ribbon of the same color with a velvet ribbon of contrasting light, then it occurred to me that I could take ribbons of the same color - but of different textures - satin and velvet, for example. But in the end, I liked using bright Christmas ribbons - it suits the style of my tree better.

You can also start attaching triangles from both sides of the ball and go to the middle. And in the place where the joint will be, grab it with a ribbon.

Then we took a large ball and a narrow braid. This was an unsuccessful option, since the width of the braid is not enough to cover all the borders of the triangles:

We have drawn conclusions for ourselves:
1. ball with a diameter of 8-10 cm - tape with a width of 16-20 mm.
2. Balls with a diameter of 4-5 cm - ribbons with a width of 7-10 mm.
For a ball with a diameter of 8 cm - 6.5 meters of ribbons, for a ball of 4 cm - about 3 meters of ribbons.
Satin-velvet combinations look beautiful on large balls, you can play with color by attaching triangles as you please. You can play with texture. The main thing is that the ribbons are approximately the same width and this width corresponds to the diameter of the ball. Although.. what you can’t come up with along the way)))

Today we decided to collect wide ribbons in the style of shabby chic, polka dots, flowers, Christmas ribbons in the vintage style, and make vintage balls. We will definitely share the result! And already when choosing ribbons, the idea came to me that you can use lace (not expensive lace, but a ribbon - a la lace), you can... Yes, you can do anything)))) Keep the children busy, keep yourself busy, and have a merry New Year's Eve hype!
