Tunic

Cossack male groups were distinguished by their attributes, clothing, special language, and unique pastime.
In the “knightly” era, the ancient Cossacks, according to V.D. Sukhorukov, got their clothes with weapons. Attacking Azov and the Nagai uluses, and especially carrying out distant searches along the Azov and Black seas to Constantinople and ancient Colchis, often devastating Trebizond, Sinop, Riza, Kerch, Kafa, Balaklava, Temryuk and many other cities and villages, they obtained silver, gold, precious stones, clothing, weapons, rich Asian fabrics and various goods. From such spoils they made a dress, whoever could, and as he wanted, without observing uniformity: one dressed up in Turkish, one in a dress of an old Russian cut, another in Tatar, Circassian, Persian or Kalmyk, even in One Cossack had a mixture of clothes and weapons of different nations.
The village ataman Savva Kochet, who brought the Astrakhan rebels from the Don to Moscow in 1705, expressed gratitude to the Great Monarch on behalf of the entire Don army in the following words: “We have been sought by your mercy more than all your subjects: your decree on dress and beards has not touched us. We wear a dress according to our ancient custom, which anyone will like: one dresses as a Circassian, another as a Kalmyk, another in a Russian dress of an old cut, and we do not make any criticism or ridicule to each other; No one here wears German dress and we all have no desire for it, unless there is royal permission...”

2. Back with a bend - 1 child.
3. Sleeve – 2 children. The sleeve detail shows both the cut line for the fastener with a cuff and the facing of the bottom of the sleeve without a cuff.

5. Stand-up collar with fold – 2 pieces. Collar height – from 4 to 7 cm.
6. Cuff – 2 parts. (for a gymnast). Cut the cuffs separately in the form of rectangles: cuff height 12-20 cm, folded - 6-10 cm (cuff height depends on the number of buttons), width - 26-28 cm (with an average build).
Iron the spacer from the wrong side to the outer halves of the fastener straps and to the outer part of the collar. Additionally, iron the flaps of the interfacing to the front from the wrong side at the lower corners of the cutout for the fastener. Also glue the outer halves of the cuffs.
Sewing:
1) Clasp. Fold each front panel in half lengthwise with the wrong side facing in and iron. I hand over the outer halves of the planks to the longitudinal sections. Cut the front allowances diagonally in the lower corners of the front neckline. Press the seam allowances for attaching the slats onto the slats. Fold the inner halves of the planks and baste them over the seams of the planks. Sew the strips close to the seams. Place the left bar over the right one and pin. Take the lower ends of the strips together and stitch them to the front. Press seam allowances down. Sew the strips crosswise 1 cm above the lower end.
2) Sew the shoulder seams forward and topstitch them along the back close to the seams.
3) Stand collar. Place the collar pieces right sides together and stitch the outer edges, starting and ending the stitching exactly at the sewing line. Cut seam allowances close to the stitching. Turn the collar out and iron it. Sew the outer collar into the neckline from the wrong side of the shirt. Press the seam allowances onto the collar. Fold the inner collar and baste it to the wrong side of the shirt. Sew the collar from the front side along the outer edge and along the stitching seam at a distance of 2 mm.
4) Sleeves. Slightly gather the sleeve heads. Sew sleeves into open armholes. Press the seam allowances onto the front and back. Sew the front and back close to the sleeve seams.
5) On each side, use a single stitch to sew the side seam and the sleeve seam. Fold the hem allowance for the bottom of the shirt, iron it and topstitch from the right side at a distance of approx. 1 cm from the edge.
5) Iron the one-piece facings at the bottom of the sleeves to the wrong side. Topstitch each sleeve 4.5 cm above the bottom edge.

The sleeves of the gymnast are made with cuffs (see Figure 2). Cuffs can have any number of buttons. To ensure that the arm fits freely into the sleeve and the cuffs are not too narrow, they are cut out taking into account the individual characteristics of the person. To calculate the width of the cuff, before cutting, you need to measure the circumference of the hand in its widest part (above the knuckles, the hand is freely lowered) and add 4 cm to this measurement for the fastener. At the sleeve cut, at a distance of 4-6 cm from the edge where the loops will be, at a distance of 2-3 cm from each other, two folds are made in the direction of the cut (front to back), the width of the folds along the lower cut of the sleeve when cutting is marked in the form of segments 2-3 cm long. Before sewing the cuff to the sleeve, you need to attach the parts to each other and check that the lower cut of the sleeve matches the width of the cuff.

The sleeve fastener can be processed in two ways. If the sleeve consists of one piece, the cut is processed using a special strip. If the sleeve consists of two parts, the elbow seam is stitched along the entire length close to the seam, while at the same time the sleeve cut allowances are folded in and stitched in the same way.

This or that people is always recognized by their national costume. The clothing of the Cossacks, like that of any people, has come a long way in development and is largely connected with history, traditions and local tastes. In the 16-17th century, the Cossack costume was formed under the influence of several cultures; they did not have their own costume for a long time. Their outfit consisted of elements of Russian, Tatar, Turkish and Circassian clothing, sometimes very strange in combination of items and colors. The clothes of the Cossacks were a reflection of their identity and culture; they were treated with respect, like a second skin. Therefore, it was impossible to wear someone else’s clothes, including those of a murdered person, without a special purification ceremony. But by our time, women's clothing has changed under the influence of European fashion. The men's suit was replaced by a mandatory military suit, which the Cossacks had to purchase with their own money and, after completing their service, wore it at home.

At the beginning of the 16th century, a special social stratum was formed - the Cossacks. With each century, clothing changed, its own characteristics appeared:

  • 16th century - shirt, trousers, caftan, hat, boots. The Cossacks loved to show off their best side, so they wore velvet caftans, belted with expensive Turkish and Persian sashes and shawls. The Cossacks entertained themselves by showing off clothes from their wardrobe;
  • Equipment of the Cossacks of the 17th and 18th centuries - zipun, caftan, shirt, trousers, trukhmyanka (men's clothing). Women wore: from underwear - a shirt, trousers, kubelok, from outerwear - a sheepskin coat;
  • 19th century - shirt, loose trousers, light shoes, knitted house socks, sheepskin sheepskin coat, cap. Women wore blouses and wide linen skirts;
  • 20th century - protective cap, tunic, uniform, overcoat (clothing for men). For women, a spacious matinee jacket with a front clasp has become fashionable. The girls wore a fitted jacket with a bodice that reached to the hips;
  • 21st century - the Cossack uniform has been forced out of everyday life, but rare examples can still be found. They are sent to museums as exhibits.

Some troops were distinguished from others by a certain color of their uniform. The uniforms, shoulder straps, and caps of the Cossacks who lived on the Don were blue with red stripes and rims. The costume of the Cossacks from Kuban consisted of a Circassian coat and black trousers, purple stripes were sewn onto the trousers, and a hat was put on the head. The basis of the decoration of the Terek Cossacks was a black uniform with blue shoulder straps, the cap was also black with a blue rim. The Cossacks from Astrakhan had blue uniforms with yellow shoulder straps, yellow stripes on the pants and a blue cap with a yellow rim. The costume of the Ural Cossacks included blue uniforms with purple shoulder straps, a blue cap with a purple rim, and purple stripes on the pants. The Yaik Cossack wore a green uniform (Chekmen type) with blue shoulder straps, gray trousers with blue stripes on the sides. The head was decorated with a green cap with a blue rim. Cossacks from Siberia wore green uniforms and a green cap with a red rim, and red stripes were sewn onto their trousers.

The uniform of the Cossacks living on the banks of the Amur and in the Trans-Baikal Territory consisted of a green uniform, trousers with yellow stripes on the sides, and a green cap with a yellow rim.

The Volga Cossacks wore blue uniforms, trousers with red stripes, and a blue cap with a red rim. The basis of the decoration of the Yenisei Cossacks was a green uniform, red stripes were sewn onto the trousers, and a green cap with a red rim. The costume of the Ussuri Cossacks consisted of a green uniform with yellow shoulder straps and pants with yellow stripes. The head was decorated with a green cap with a yellow rim.

  1. Types of clothing:
  2. Solemn - worn at parades, drill reviews, military oath ceremonies, in churches, during burials and laying wreaths at monuments and graves. An obligatory part of the festive attire is the Cossack, which is a short caftan with a stand-up collar;

Men's

  • In ancient sources we find the following description of clothing:
  • Zipun is a caftan without a collar, made from homemade cloth in bright colors. In the 20th century, it was replaced by the venzerada - a long cape with a hood;
  • Bloomers are a necessary part of the Cossack uniform, which was tied with a narrow strap, and a wallet was sewn behind it. The absence of a belt was considered a shame. On weekdays they wore blue trousers, and on holidays and wedding days - red trousers;
  • There are two types of shirts - beshmet and Russian. The beshmets were wrapped tightly and reached to the knees, fastened with hooks. A special feature of the beshmet was its free sleeves. In contrast to Russian shirts, they were worn untucked. Shirts were made from canvas and silk. For a wedding, a man wore a beautifully embroidered shirt;
  • A hoodie is a woolen cape with a hood. It did not let water through and did not crack in severe frosts, like things made of leather.
  • Chekmen - an open outer caftan made of cloth among the Don Cossacks with loose sleeves;
  • Kereya - outer caftan made of Zaporizhian Cossack cloth;
  • Arkhaluk - Cossack outer clothing, reminiscent of a quilted Tatar robe;
  • Chembars - leather pants worn for fishing;
  • A hoodie knitted from wool, pulled over a sheepskin coat in winter or in bad weather;
  • In cold weather, short fur coats were worn over bare bodies. When the wool rubbed against the body, which caused an electric field to appear and the person warmed up. If a person sweated, then the sheepskin prevented clothes from absorbing sweat, saving him from icing;

Burka is a sleeveless felt cape of white, black or brown color. She could protect in any bad weather. During the night it was used as a bedding and blanket. The burka, placed on poles, became a tent. And if you put it over your shoulders, it hid your weapon and protected you from the rain.

The Cossacks greatly valued the undershirts that their mothers or wives sewed for them. They believed that they saved them in battle. For christenings, a special shirt was sewn by the godmother; this shirt was kept throughout life. When a Cossack died, the shirt was burned. This ritual has survived to this day.

  1. Stripes - a bright stripe on the sides of the pants, indicates which military class the Cossack belongs to. Stripes for Cossacks are a symbol of freedom; they are a necessary element of the Cossack uniform in non-war times;
  2. Cossacks wore officer rank insignia all their lives;
  3. Earrings indicated a place in the family. For example, if a woman has one son, then he puts the earring in his left ear, and if he is the last of the children, then he puts it in his right ear. Two earrings said that the parents had one child.

Stripes are a symbol of fair relations among the Cossacks. Later they began to indicate that the person was exempt from government taxes. During the Civil War, the Cossack uniform was abolished. Due to the inconvenience during the battles, the Cossacks changed their usual uniform to military uniform: a tunic, an overcoat, and a cap. The ancient Cossack costume was worn only for parades.

Women's

The outfit of Cossack women is a kind of stylization of the clothing of the Turkic people. It includes:

  • The shirt is the basis of a woman’s outfit. It is a long robe, almost to the toes, the bottom of which was made of coarse linen, the top of thin linen;
  • Kubelek - a ceremonial dress of Cossack women on the Don with a V-shaped neckline; a beautiful pattern was laid out on it with braid;
  • Women who were married wore a sukman (a type of sundress), which was made from four pieces of fabric. It covered the upper body - chest and back. Its characteristic feature was rather short and narrow sleeves. A colored silk ribbon was sewn to the bottom of the sukman, and along the very edge it was trimmed with garus (a type of braid woven with fingers in a special way);
  • Kokhta - Cossack outer clothing for holidays;
  • A sundress is a dress with straps, worn paired with a shirt. They were made from home-made canvas or cloth, silk, and brocade. They were decorated with ribbons, chintz stripes, and fringe. Don Cossack women called a bright sundress made of calico;
  • Zapon - white apron. When cleaning, it prevented clothes from getting dirty; at holidays it was an additional accessory that could diversify and decorate a costume. They put it on a shirt or sundress. The everyday apron was made of canvas, and the formal apron was made of rich lace fabric;
  • Wide or narrow trousers. They were sewn from cotton fabric, and the visible lower part was made of silk for beauty and economy;
  • Zhupeyka is the outer winter Cossack clothing. Worn on the Don in the 19th-20th century;
  • Kaftan is a men's style shirt. Outside the house, Cossack women wore kavrak - a caftan, which was buttoned to the waist;
  • A long fox fur coat, without buttons, with long sleeves, covered with brocade or satin fabric;
  • Bashlyk is a cloth hood with two long ends, worn over a hat. Women even carried children there;
  • Spidnitsa - an underskirt, often decorated with embroidery. In the winter season, women wore stitched cotton skirts. A wealthy Cossack woman could afford to wear several skirts at once;
  • A plaid skirt served as good protection in cold weather. Cossack women from poor families wore cambric and calico skirts.

Everyday outfit included a shirt with long sleeves, sweaters, and a cotton skirt. Ceremonial costume - shirt, lace skirt to the toes, cuirass - women's short blouse. A necessary element of traditional Cossack clothing was a lace apron with numerous frills. Clothes made of red material were considered the most beautiful.

The best quality fabric was considered to be the outfit of brides. From the age of 30, Cossack women wore darker, plain clothes with a simple cover. Girls wore one shirt, and older people wore a skirt on top.

At the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century on the Lower Don, the main part of the outfit was a bright dress - a kubelok. In the 20th century, people on the Don often began to wear an outfit consisting of a skirt and blouse, called a “Couple”. In poor families, a blouse with a skirt could also be a wedding suit.

The difference between the clothing of the Kuban and the Don Cossacks

Due to different places of residence, differences appeared in the costumes of the Don and Kuban Cossacks. The equipment of the Kuban Cossacks was significantly influenced by the clothing of the highlanders. Don Cossacks most often wore chekmen, while Kuban Cossacks usually wore circassians, which are common in the Caucasus.

The original costume of the Cossacks who lived on the Don included a hat, trousers with stripes, boots, beshmets, belts and sword belts, and a woolen cap. The clothes of the Kuban Cossacks are trousers, cherkeska, beshmet, bashlyk, burka, hat and boots. A necessary element was a saber hanging on the belt, and later a dagger.

A green jacket and blue trousers are the ammunition of the Don Army. They wore the suit all the time: both in battles and at home. The equipment of the Kuban Cossack army included a Circassian coat, a beshmet, and trousers. It was also worn in battle and in peacetime.

The Don Cossacks wore blue pants on everyday days, and in church or on holidays they wore a crimson shade. Also, the color was chosen based on the person’s age. The fabric and color of the pants of the Kuban Cossacks were selected according to military rank and season.

Shoes

There were a lot of boots, as they were comfortable for riding and walking for a long time. They were usually of the Tatar type in red, green or yellow. The Cossacks especially loved soft boots with or without low heels. Ichigi - boots with long tops, without heels. They were made mainly from durable cowhide. Chiriki - leather galoshes with hard soles, which were worn over soft ichigi. Valenki are a type of boots made of wool. They were worn by adults from wealthy families. Felt boots with cut-off tops were called felt boots; they were worn in the hut, and tall ones were worn on trips. Postals (pistons) are the most simple shoes made of leather. Wear them to work. Vorotyashki are lightweight shoes made so that the fur is inside. Carpets are slippers made from stiff threads.

Women had a lot of shoes both for everyday wear and for holidays:

  1. Hussariki - bright dress boots with heels and laces;
  2. Ichigi - shoes made of red leather, which was decorated with a design;
  3. Chevyaki - soft open shoes without heels;
  4. Shoes – leather shoes with straps;
  5. Chedygi - pointed boots of Astrakhan cut with high heels;
  6. Gaiters - shoes with long tops that were fastened at the side;
  7. Barettes are narrow-toed low shoes with low heels.

At the beginning of the 20th century, rubber galoshes became fashionable. Socks made of white yarn were worn underneath them. They have not gone out of use to this day.

Hats

They are considered a special element of costumes. Many legends, traditions and signs are associated with the hat and cap. The Cossack never parted with his hat, considering it a part of himself. Icons and prayers written down by children were sewn into the hat. The main quality is that the headdress was multifunctional. Fur saved the eyes from dust and wind; with its help, one could quickly get into one’s home without covering one’s hair and eyes with earth. It was also used as a sleeping pillow.

If a hat came off one's head, it was a challenge to a fight. The cap of the killed Cossack was to be brought home and placed on a shelf near the icon. If a Cossack woman got married for the second time, then her new husband would lower the cap of the previous owner into the water, thereby making promises to take care of the family.

Bashlyk is a head cape made of thin fabric. It was made in the form of a hood with long ears that were wrapped around the neck. Initially introduced as an element of the military uniform of the Cossacks, it later became fashionable among many residents of Russia and Europe.

By the way the cap was tied, one could learn a lot about the Cossack: if the cap is tied on the chest, it means that he completed military service. If it is crossed on the chest, he is now on duty, and if it is clear that the ends are thrown behind his back, then the Cossack is resting.

Flies are rectangular cotton headscarves worn only for fishing. Papakha is a men's headdress made of sheepskin or astrakhan fur. An important piece of paper containing a secret message could be placed behind the lapel of the hat. This was the most reliable place, because the Cossacks did not lose their hats. Hats were made in different cuts: low - with a flat top or high - with a cone-shaped top.

Unmarried girls were allowed to go out with their heads open and with their braids down their backs. Tarkich - a girl's headscarf. Kazimirka is a small patterned scarf. It was tied like a bandana, covering the forehead. Faishonka is a scarf made of silk with lace. It had long ends that were tied in the form of a bow. Worn by young girls on holidays. Kokoshnik is a ceremonial headdress. Sometimes there was only one kokoshnik in a farm. The owners gave it to the bride for a wedding ceremony for a certain price.

An addition to a married woman's outfit was a silk shawl. Shlychka is a small fabric cap worn by married women, which was worn over a braid and covered at the back with a scarf. This type of hat was worn in the Kuban and Don. A headdress is an oval silk headdress of married young women with a chintz lining, made on a durable cardboard base. It was decorated with ribbons, bows, and lace. In the 19th century, in the upper reaches of the Don, a headdress - a cap - was gaining popularity. This is a wedge-shaped stocking with a tassel at the top. Dressed as married women with their hair tied up in a bun. The kubelek went well with the warrior. A warrior is a bright hat under which the hair was hidden. A woman was only allowed to go bare-haired in front of her husband. Could be brocade, silk, cotton. Flowers or feathers were attached to the top. Women's Cossack clothing was always worn complete with a headdress. A Casimirka was thrown over the shlychka, and a shawl was thrown over the Casimirka.

Even in the modern world, a suit indicates a person’s position among people. In comparison with other peoples, for the Cossacks, who lived in harsh conditions and were forced to wear military uniforms, small details mattered: earrings in the ear, a specially tied cap. From them, as from an open book, one could learn a lot about a fellow man. In order to preserve the traditional Cossack outfit for future generations, it is necessary to regularly present costumes.
