The best fashion designers. Famous fashion designers: creators, rebels, inspirers

To mom

Clothing designers are incredibly creative people who supply their own and other people's stores with new, modern, interesting clothes. Many people like this profession, but not everyone manages to become a fashion designer. In this article we will tell you a lot about this work, as well as about some famous designers such as Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and others.

Design profession

In Russia, a person who works as a fashion designer is much less common than in European countries and America. These are people who not only develop the decor and determine the style of the collection, but choose the fabric, accessories and very often make the designed clothes themselves. This work requires a lot of human effort and time. But, like any creative profession, it only causes joy and pleasant sensations, and ultimately brings satisfaction.

As in any activity, there is its own specialization, there are several areas that cover different areas. Clothing designers are also divided into three narrow specialties. If you choose this profession, you can be a fashion designer, artist, or a specialist in working with fur.

Constructor

Fashion designer-clothing designer is one of the narrow areas of the fashion world. A specialist must have many professional qualities. He must feel people's moods, love his work, be able to draw, be well versed in trends, follow the collections of fashion houses, know the types of fabrics and much more.

A clothing designer is engaged in making sketches for sewing clothes. Moreover, if a fashion designer-artist makes sketches on small-sized paper, then the designer must draw every detail in real size. He makes patterns and patterns. However, this is not the end of the specialist’s responsibilities. After all, he must also participate in sewing, choose the fabric for the item, select combinations of fabrics by color.

Education

The peculiarities of this profession are that a specialist studies not for 5-6 years, but for his whole life. Every year something changes: new working techniques, fabrics, colors, clothing models appear. Fashion always moves forward at great speed. You need to have time to catch trends and the mood of buyers.

But a clothing designer must receive special education. Learning begins at a young age. First you need to graduate from high school, where drawing is taught well. Many go to technical schools after 9th grade, where they teach sewing and drawing. After school or technical school, you must graduate from a higher educational institution in your specialty.

Clothing designers study all their lives and try to constantly expand their knowledge.

List of the most famous

Among the famous Russian fashion designers, Valentin Yudashkin and Vyacheslav Zaitsev are especially noteworthy. Among those who have conquered the whole world, the following names are in the forefront: Coco Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, and Stefano Gabbana, Christian Dior, Giorgio Armani and others.

Coco Chanel

Legends are made about the work of Coco Chanel. Even famous clothing designers often admit their love for this woman’s work. It took her a long time to achieve her goal, but in the end she became a trendsetter of the 20th century. Now her brand is thriving, with a total of 147 boutiques open worldwide.

Chanel Collections

Many fashion designers work for Chanel. Famous fashion designers work for several months on one collection. But most often they stick to the same style - producing elegant but comfortable clothes. Office suits, coats and dresses are the main assortment of the brand.

Yves Saint Laurent

A successful fashion designer is Yves Saint Laurent, who won the hearts of women with his outfits. For some time he worked for the Christian Dior brand, after which he left it and created his own brand called YSL. Nowadays, outfits from Yves Saint Laurent are prohibitively expensive, just like cosmetics and perfumes from this brand. Many famous clothing designers worked in this company, including Hedi Slimane, who until recently was the designer of the brand.

Yves Saint Laurent Collections

The brand's collections are mostly of interest to bright girls and women from the worlds of fashion and business. After all, the Yves Saint Laurent brand offers extravagant trouser suits in bright colors, transparent shirts, African-style dresses, tuxedos for women, and leather clothing. Reviews about the clothes of the fashion house are amazing. Women who can afford expensive clothes are increasingly choosing Yves Saint Laurent.

and Stefano Gabbana

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are two whose clothes are especially loved in Russia. Now these legendary designers are recognized as the richest people on the planet by Forbes magazine, although several years ago, when their house was just opened, they could not even pay for the work of models and invited friends to their shows. In their own opinion, a clothing designer must always be perfectly dressed and must love his profession.

Dolce & Gabbana collections

Luxury clothing, shoes, perfumes and cosmetics are presented in the fashion houses of this brand. The brand's styles are always varied. Business suits and safari-style overalls - it all lives under one roof. Designers always remind us that they do not follow fashion, but set it. The statement, of course, caused a storm of excitement, but it is true.

Mark Jacobs

The modern designer and owner of his own brand began his career as a clothing designer as a salesman in a store. Mark graduated from the New York School of Design, where he was the best student. One day he was invited to take the post of chief designer of the Perry Ellis brand. The grunge collection created by the young designer for this brand brought Mark not only fame, but also a worldwide calling. After his dizzying success, Jacobs founded a company, which he named after himself. A few years later, Mark was offered the post of chief designer at the even more prestigious company Louis Vuitton. Not long ago, he stopped working with this company and focused on developing his own company.

Marc Jacobs Collections

Today, the Marc Jacobs fashion house is famous for its collection of perfumes for women; new products are constantly being released that are incredibly in demand in Russia. The brand is currently at the development stage. The brand’s collections are extremely unusual, practically everything is bright, most often with original prints.

Jacobs is also loved by other fashion designers. Famous fashion designers say that Mark is a genius and has a great future ahead of him.

Gianni Versace

Since childhood, the future fashion designer Gianni Versace helped his mother in her small clothing store. There he learned how to select accessories for clothes, sew, and understand fabrics. When Gianni turned 25 years old, from his small but cozy Italian town he went to conquer the large and unknown Milan. There he works as a designer in two fashion houses.

A few years later, he presented his first clothing collection and in the same year founded a brand named after himself. He was helped in his business by his older brother, who worked as an administrator, as well as his sister, who was in charge of photo shoots. The peak of Gianni Versace's career came at the end of the 20th century, when Madonna and Princess Diana bought his clothes.

In 1997, Gianni Versace was shot and killed. His business is now run by his younger sister.

Collections "Versace"

The Versace fashion house is famous for its luxurious dresses, in which actresses and singers appear on the red carpet. Among the regular customers is Angelina Jolie, who wears a Versace dress to almost every event.

Gucci fashion house

Italian fashion designer Guccio Gucci was the founder of the Gucci house, which is the most successful and ranks second in terms of sales after Louis Vuitton. Famous fans of the brand include Grace Kelly (Princess of Monaco), who wore a silk scarf from the brand, and Jackie Kennedy (First Lady of the United States).

Gucci brand collections are often made in shades of brown, green and red. The clothes are extremely extravagant; many models are not suitable for everyday wear.

Fashion house Burberry

The fashion house Burberry has gained enormous popularity in recent years; the distinctive sign of its products has become the English check. The main range of products are scarves, bags, and clothing that are decorated with this print. Clothes are extremely popular in England, France, Italy, Germany and many other European countries. Even fashion designer Victoria Beckham declared her love for this brand.

Fashion is not only an industry, but also an art. Fashion always reacts sensitively to changes in society, sometimes it helps to “keep a mark” and maintain presence of mind in unbearable situations - it’s worth remembering the French women in occupied Paris, who stubbornly continued to wear dresses and show the invaders French chic to show: “You can’t conquer us. You can seize our lands, but you cannot break our spirit!..” We decided to talk about 20 famous couturiers, the main innovators and revolutionaries of the fashion world and true Artists who worked in the name of beauty.

Charles and Jean-Philippe Worth

The first couturier in the history of High Fashion is deservedly considered the Englishman Charles Frederick Worth - the king of fashion designers and fashion designer of kings, among whose clients there were 9 crowned heads. In 1857, Worth opened his first full-fledged fashion house on the Rue de la Paix in Paris. After the death of Charles himself, the House passed to his sons, Jean-Philippe and Gasne. In the 20th century, Jean-Philip Worth would also become a famous couturier, a favorite of the great Italian actress Eleanor Duse. The Worths would become the first fashion dynasty.

Jacques Doucet

Young Jacques Doucet had no intention of connecting his future with fashion - he dreamed of becoming a famous artist. But after the death of his parents, Jacques inherited their production of Doucet Lingerie, a family business selling underwear. “Mr. Jacques,” as he was now called, got involved and turned it into the main fashion house of the early 20th century. Doucet created luxurious, majestic, intricate outfits, and valued luxury and beauty much more than practicality and relevance. He was a famous philanthropist and helped young talents: for example, it was Mr. Jacques who introduced Paul Poiret and Madeleine Vionnet to the world of fashion.

Jeanne Paquin

Paul Poiret

Paul Poiret began sewing as a child, creating outfits for his sisters' dolls. After studying with Jacques Doucet, he went to work at the House of Worth, and having honed his skills there, he opened his own House. Poiret was the first fashion designer to suggest that women abandon the corset and wear tunic dresses and high-waisted dresses in an antique style. Poiret's outfits and fabrics were always luxurious - he sought inspiration in the culture of the East, like many couturiers after the arrival of the Russian ballet and the famous “Diaghilev seasons” in Paris. Russia was also considered “East” at that time, and Poiret even created the “Kazan” collection with elements of Russian folk costume.

Unfortunately, already in the 20s, the popularity of couturier began to decline. There were completely different things in fashion, and Coco Chanel became a symbol of change. Poiret was outraged by the abundance of black and the simplicity of her clothes, he even asked Mademoiselle Coco herself if all this meant that she was in mourning. The cruel Coco answered Poiret: “Yes, according to you!”

Coco Chanel

This legendary woman really does not need an introduction - we think everyone, regardless of age, gender and place of residence, has heard of Mademoiselle Coco. A little black dress, Chanel No. 5 perfume, the first trouser suits, the iconic tweed jacket, the luxury of simplicity and elegance instead of pomp and decoration, quilted Chanel 2.55 it-bags - modern fashionistas inherited all this from the main Frenchwoman of the fashion world.

Elsa Schiaparelli

"Shocking Elsa", the first eccentric of fashion and the founder of pret-a-porte, is now not nearly as famous as her main competitor, Coco Chanel. Their working methods and approach to fashion were as different as possible: Elsa loved to shock, worked with surrealist artists and did not like black and tweed at all. It was she who introduced shocking pink into fashion - bright fuchsia, shocking pink, which became her calling card - she was buried in a suit of this exact color. Together with Salvador Dali, Elsa invented and created a lobster dress, a skeleton dress, and a whole collection of hats: a mutton chop hat, a shoe hat, a telescope hat... We are not delighted to talk about this woman, full of ideas and energy If we can’t, be sure to read her inspiring autobiography, My Shocking Life!

Madeleine Vionnet

Madeleine Vionnet has always been called the “architect of fashion” - it was she who invented the bias cutting technique and was a true master of drapery. Her dresses, thanks to the skill of cutting, always fit perfectly, emphasizing every curve of the client’s body. And fashionable “pirates”, trying to copy Vionne’s outfits and make money on her talent, struggled for hours trying to understand their design - they first had to rip apart the dress, embroider numerous darts and try to understand how these pieces fit together into one harmony.

Jeanne Lanvin

Jeanne Lanvin's career as a fashion designer began with outfits for her little daughter - seeing the charming dresses of the baby walking with her mother, other women stopped to find out which tailor sews such wonderful children's clothes. Soon Jeanne Lanvin began to sew dresses for adults, but all her stores also sold children's collections. She always looked for inspiration in the vibrant colors of nature and the paintings of artists, and admired Botticelli and Renoir. And the famous shade “Lanvin blue” became the hallmark of the House.

Jean Patou

Jean Patou was not a master of either drawing or sewing, and often created his models directly on a mannequin. He became the first designer to produce sportswear - tennis skirts and shorts, swimwear, and gained fame as the tailor who dressed tennis star Suzanne Lanolin. Patou looked for inspiration in the works of cubist artists, adopting their geometric shapes, strict lines and contrasting colors.

Madame Gre

Madame Gre, in her own words, always wanted to be a sculptor - and did not see the difference between working with stone and working with fabric. Like a real sculptor, she created all her masterpiece dresses “live”, directly on a mannequin and without patterns, so it was simply impossible to copy her things. The incredible complexity of the drapery and the perfect fit of the outfits turned the models into the best examples of ancient art.

Marcel Rocha

In 1942, Marcel Rocha anticipated the revolution that Christian Dior would make in fashion five years later: even before the appearance of the famous new look, Rocha returned the corset, forgotten for many war years, to women's wardrobes. And also loose flannel trousers, an item that was generally not at all typical for the women’s wardrobe of those years. Before Marcel Rocha, women wore trousers only in exceptional cases - either on vacation or at home, and Rocha made them a full part of their everyday wardrobe.

Jacques Fath

Before becoming a fashion designer, Jacques Fath managed to serve in the army, be captured, receive several military awards and work on the stock exchange - only then he opened his own atelier. Fat learned his craft as a designer himself. And he gained popularity thanks to the new style he created for a chic young Parisian woman: he sewed flowing airy skirts, luxurious dresses, and even before Christian Dior, he began experimenting with a silhouette that would soon be called the new look.

Christian Dior

Christian Dior was glorified by his famous collection of 1947 - the same one that demonstrated the feminine new look silhouette to the post-war world. From that very collection, for ten years (until his death in 1957), Christian Dior was the recognized king of fashion. Dior approached the creation of collections with incredible care: in his autobiography “Dior on Dior” he talks in detail about how he worked on shows, how he could send a single dress for alteration 7-8 times and in the end not even include it to the collection.

Hubert de Givenchy

Before opening his own House, Hubert de Givenchy managed to work for the most famous designers of those years: Jacques Fath, Christian Dior, Elsa Schiaparelli. It was Elsa who gave him a start in life, who saw talent in the young man. Givenchy's muse and regular client for 40 years was Audrey Hepburn - she came to him to buy costumes for the film Sabrina, and this meeting became the beginning of a long-term friendship. For this film, Hubert Givenchy received his first Oscar as a costume designer and created outfits for Audrey in many more films - including the most famous, Breakfast at Tiffany's.

Cristobal Balenciaga

Cristobal Balenciaga is a real enigma of the fashion world. He never allowed strangers into his life, so not much is known about her. At the age of 13, he fulfilled his first order - he approached the Marquise de Cassa Torres on the street and declared that he would sew an outfit much better than the one she was wearing now, if he had the same fabrics. The Marquise was surprised, but invited the boy to try to make her a toilet - and was shocked when he sewed an outfit for her no worse than any famous couturier. At 16 he opened his own studio. At 19 – own fashion house. He was a great architect and knew how to combine strict lines with exaggerated volumes, restraint and luxury. Coco Chanel herself recognized him as her only competitor - and the only Couturier with a capital C among designers.

Paco Rabanne

Paco Rabanne made a real revolution in fashion in the 60s - this time technological. His collection, consisting of only 12 outfits and presented in Paris in 1966, created a real sensation - he created outfits from modern materials: plastic, metal, feathers and metal mesh, paper, dried flowers. His works fully reflected the spirit of the space age, the fashion for futurism and fantasies about the technogenic future. Perhaps Paco Rabanne was prompted to use materials that were not at all “fashionable” and not used in fashion by his education as an architect - although he never worked a day in his specialty.

Pierre Balmain

Pierre Balman's first collection, released in 1945, amazed the public. Balman glorified the luxury, brilliance and brightness forgotten during the war years. The collection included evening dresses, kimonos, trouser suits made of expensive fabrics - all with rich trimmings, sewing, embroidery, and lace. He loved to dress women beautifully, but without excessive extravagance.

Pierre Cardin

Pierre Cardin devoted the first years of his work exclusively to creating costumes for the theater, and only then moved on to creating women's and men's collections. He retained some theatricality in his approach to modeling: the main distinguishing features of Cardin’s style were the use of unusual synthetic materials, bright simple colors and unusual shapes - it was thanks to this that he received the unofficial title of the main futurist of the fashion world. Cardin's most famous creation was the ball dress.

Yves Saint Laurent

Yves Saint Laurent began his career working for Christian Dior, and after his death he became the head of the house of Dior. His 1958 collection earned rave reviews from critics, but in 1960 Saint Laurent was drafted into the army, and he returned to fashion only a year later - but already in his own House of Yves Saint Laurent. Yves Saint Laurent invented the first women's tuxedo, introduced many other elements of the men's wardrobe into women's fashion and is considered the founder of the unisex style.

Fashion designer is not just a profession. This is a real calling. The world's best couturiers prove this truth by their own example. Each of them has a fashion house with its own fans and critics, more than one line of fashionable and stylish products, its own character and vision of the fashion world as a whole.

Fashionable clothing designers of our time

Thanks to the special cult of fashion, the general hysteria around one’s own looks and fashion presentation, modern popular brands and fashionable clothing designers, dictating innovative ideas, play a special role in the development of the fashion industry. Masters of their craft work to create real design masterpieces, both alone and in company with equally talented assistants or novice designers. Leading designers have already become legends, and some fashion designers are just beginning to conquer the heights of success.

The most famous designers in Europe

It so happened that the heart of the fashion industry became old Europe, where brilliant fashion designers were born who became famous throughout the world. France turned out to be particularly rich in fashion talent. It was here that world-famous fashion designers were most often born.

The most iconic and world-recognized designers of men's clothing and women's exclusive clothing born in France:

  1. Pierre Cardin;
  2. Jean Paul Gaultier;
  3. Christian Lacroix;
  4. Paco Rabanne;
  5. Givenchy.

Greetings from romantic France

Cardin is a fashion designer who captivates with his special style. Throughout the world he was known as an extraordinary inventor and bold experimenter. The master of haute couture began his career in Paris. From the very beginning to the present day, his outfits are the personification of chic and elegance, supported by an original presentation and an unconventional vision of individual details.

Another good example of male talent is Jean Paul Gaultier. He always considered Cardin to be a role model. Gaultier was the main founder of fashion trends and new directions in the 80s and 90s. Many show business stars considered it an honor to acquire new clothes from the famous fashion designer.

Traditional ethno and fashionable avant-garde

Christian Lacroix began his dizzying career with simple sketches of knitted clothes and suits in ethnic style. The master's first collection was also the personification of national folklore. Ethnic accents are still considered a fashion designer’s “trick”.

Paco Rabanne became famous for using very unusual materials to create his extravagant clothes: from thick sheets of paper to metal elements. Each collection from the French fashionista is another challenge to the conservative world and classic fashion trends.

Famous fashion designers from Italy

Of course, people from Italy are also endowed with a special talent for creating luxurious fashion works. The charismatic Valentino Garavani is rightfully considered the king of the fashion industry. His dresses are a temptation for the most luxurious and elegant ladies of all ages.

Jacqueline Kennedy was spotted among his fans. Today the master is not so active in creating new clothing lines. However, he is still considered one of the most influential people in the modern fashion beauty industry.

But in the Prada fashion house a whole dynasty of talented fashion designers was born. Their names will forever remain in the history of world fashion. Today the head of the Prada fashion house is Miuccia. The granddaughter of the legendary Mario was able to accumulate all the brilliant ideas and achievements of a whole generation of fashion masters. Her collections consist exclusively of luxurious outfits that exude splendor and chic.

Secular chic and provocative “animal”

Giorgio Armani is a magnificent fashion designer who spends all his energy, time and talents on creating spectacular outfits for a male audience. In addition, the eminent designer was able to grasp the subtlest metamorphoses taking place in society and implemented the best concepts of our time into segments of respectable outfits for beautiful ladies.

Roberto Cavalli became the founder of the fashion trend with animal prints. His collections always clearly demonstrate the special style of their author. They are very recognizable.

The Italian clothing designer was the first to use a special technology for working with leather materials. The main features of each collection are the animal motif and glitter. Another innovative idea of the master is the patchwork technique.

True style icons

Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana are the most famous designers in the world, who managed to gain the status of very scandalous and provocative persons. Despite its rather spoiled biography, the great and beautiful house of Dolce and Gabbana will always be the most important brand in Italy and throughout the world.

The iconic Karl Lagerfeld has become a real legend. His biography is as exciting and interesting as his style, manner and concept in fashion. Today, Lagerfeld's personality influences not only ordinary admirers of fashion creations. The most famous designers and no less influential fashion designers are under the influence of the master.

The most iconic fashion designers from America

The American continent has also given the world many worthy personalities. The legendary Calvin Klein deserves special attention. It was he who became the founder of fashionable logomania. He transformed ordinary workwear into iconic jeans, full of glamour, style, sophistication and fashion provocation.

Ralph Lauren today is one of the most respectable, rich and successful couturiers in the whole world. The “richest designer” began his career in the States. His main “tricks” in his products are graceful cut lines, the leitmotif of the “wild west”, and the decoration of many ensembles with a silk tie.

Vera Wang is a well-known trendsetter in the world of wedding fashion. Wedding dresses from this beautiful woman are the ultimate dream of any fashionista and happy bride.

Today she sews dresses for wedding ceremonies and spectacular dresses for evening events. And it all started with the fact that one day Vera decided to create an outfit for her own wedding ceremony the way she saw it ideally.

  • Christian Dior;
  • Guccio Gucci and his son Aldo Gucci;
  • Gianni Versace;
  • Louis Vuitton;
  • Yves Saint Laurent;
  • Oscar de la Renta.

A little history

Charles Frederick Worth is considered the founder of fashion as such. This amazing man is English by nationality. However, his soul is truly French. An esthete with a particularly refined style was able to revolutionize the world of beauty in the 19th century.

Previously, all clothing was created only at the request of the client. His desires were fashion. Worth dared to develop a range of styles and special details and offer them to his customers. He completely revised the canons of female beauty of that time.

The master gravitated towards sophistication and elegance. He considered ruffles, an abundance of folds and frills to be in bad form. Beauty and femininity are imparted by exceptionally smooth lines, grace and sophistication in everything. This opinion is still relevant today. It is in simplicity that elegance lies, and sophistication and modesty are a sign of refined style.

The designer's most famous clients were Sarah Bernhardt, Nellie Melba, and Jenny Lind. A special person is Empress Elizabeth of Bavaria. Other monastic representatives also bowed to the designer’s talent.

Each season, Worth tirelessly shocked the audience with new and interesting collections of outfits. The first mannequins were real women, not wooden dummies. Each release of a new line of outfits was expected as if it were a magical mystery or a status event of special importance.

However, nothing has changed now. Each collection of a famous fashion designer is an important event in the fashion world. It attracts everyone's attention. Fashion has captivated the human mind, and it seems - forever.

In Russia, interior design has received active development relatively recently: only with the beginning of the era of capitalism, successful and wealthy people began to abandon generally accepted clichés in favor of expressing their own individuality. For insiders of this, whatever one may say, young profession, global experience served as a guide.

Participants in the review are ranked conditionally - according to the frequency of mention in industry publications around the world. The rating was based on data from the reputable agency Brand Analytics. We present to you the leaders of interior design today.

KARIM RASHID

A country: USA

Carier start:
opened his own studio in 1993

Everything he does is completely unconventional and is always received with a bang. In the last 10 years alone, Karim Rashid has received nearly 30 awards in the field of industrial design.

Half English, half Egyptian, Karim Rashid was born in Egypt, raised in Canada, and completed his design courses in Naples. He believes that furniture should reflect reality. And he tries to make objects that bring joy, simplify tasks and increase our level of beauty. Karim's life is planned out for the year ahead. He has already done more than 2000 works. Every month two of his exhibitions are held around the world.

Karim Rashid wants to design everything: cars, planes, clothes, houses, robots. Karim Rashid's futuristic habitat projects seem too bold and far from reality to many. Although the designer himself believes that they are subject to harmony and convenience, and every thing in them is as useful as possible: “A person who has once lived in my interior will never be able to return to a traditional environment, because the design from Karim Rashid will show him once and for all, that such simple and pragmatic things as a window with the right amount of light, or a special ceiling height, or multifunctional furniture are vital things Majik Café in Belgrade needs.”

The famous PYRAMID chair

True, the designer admits that the final transition to the habitat he proposed is a matter of the future. And in the present, Karim Rashid designs furniture for Alivar, BoConcept, Edra, Frighetto, Pure Design, Zerodisegno, Kartell, etc. Dishes for Mglass, Nambe, Micasa, Covo, lamps for Fosсarini, Penta, Artemide, household appliances for Gorenje . However, it does not occur to anyone to suspect Karim Rashid of self-interest. His principle: “Work for fun, not for reward. Or don’t work at all.”

PHILIP STARK

A country: France

Carier start:
opened his own studio in 1968

Stark is a super-inventor, a super-generalist and a super-businessman. He creates private homes and interiors, designs anything and everything. He advocates the “accessibility” of design, showing that his pieces can be seen, if not bought, by everyone.

“When I started working, the concept of “design” meant very beautiful and expensive things for very rich people. If you think I'll spend my whole life working for a handful of people, thank you, I'd rather sleep. Therefore, all my life I have been killing design, or rather, destroying its elitism.”

Philippe Starck promotes his brand in a unique and talented way. He promotes himself first, and behind the Starck brand comes the entire world of objects he has created. He produces and spreads ideas and myths about himself in huge quantities, being able to explain everything and everyone, convincing others that he is right. He created a masterpiece of design – a citrus juicer for Alessi – and told everyone who reproached it for its inconvenience: “And squeezing juice with it is more interesting than with a convenient electric one. We must understand that the obvious function of things is not always their true purpose.”

It’s useless to argue with him; he’ll out-argue anyway. His works are recognized and highly appreciated by both the international professional community and a huge number of consumers - from the wealthiest strata of society to ordinary people. Things from Stark are recognizable, attractive and loved. His design is super-technological, inventive, witty, ironic. Philippe Starck “plays” things. “My job is to try to clean up the world and make life better.

By surrounding yourself with ugly things, thoughts and intentions, you become an ugly person yourself. But among beautiful things, especially beautiful in meaning, life becomes better.” It seemed that there was no area of design in which he would not try his hand, and with constant success.

PATRICIA URQUIOLA

A country: Spain

Carier start:
opened her own studio in 2001

Patricia Urquiola is called a hurricane for the dizzying speed and power with which she ascended to the Olympus of world design. The places on it are occupied mainly by men, and the appearance of a woman is surprising every time. But in the case of Patricia, the lady’s merits are undeniable. “Women add more common sense to design. If the right half of the chair resembles the left, life stops. Furniture must be separated from us and presented as part of the larger world.”

Museums around the world are already adding her works to their permanent collections. The Bague lamp from Foscarini, made of perforated metal with silicone coating, and the Fjord chair from Moroso, with its shape reminiscent of the outlines of mountains, are presented in the famous MoMA - the Museum of Modern Art in New York. “In the position we occupy in a regular chair, the Fjord chair will not be comfortable. It is imperative to take an asymmetrical position in order to lean on the backrest and the only armrest located on the side. After all, the future of design lies in the absence of symmetry!” – the designer is sure.

The Flower chair, the Loom sofa and the Chaise Longue horizontal armchair - austere but elegant, simple but sophisticated - express Patricia's understanding of what design should be

Patrizia collaborates with companies of global importance: Moroso, Lissoni Associati, Agape, Alessi, B&B, De Padova, De Vecchi, Driade, Foscarini, Kartell, MDF, Molteni, San Lorenzo, Knoll, Marks and Spencer, Sand, Somma, Roberto Torretta. She knows how to convince manufacturers that they need to go beyond the boundaries of traditional and standard things.

Patricia's credo is comfort. Her specialty is “seats” and everything connected with them. However, she doesn’t make things that need to be kept behind glass, like museum exhibits: “If my product looks modern and fashionable, but is completely unusable, then I’m an idiot.”

Patricia's creations are copied. After the Italian factory Moroso released the Lowland sofa, the market was flooded with twin sofas. The model was even going to be discontinued

ARNE QUEENS

A country: Belgium

Carier start:
opened his own studio in 1999

“I love art because there are no rules and I can give real form to all my feelings. On the other hand, I love design – because it has rules, and I like to fight with them,” says Arne Queens. The poufs he made from a unique foam material in 1999 became the harbingers of the birth of a full-fledged furniture design studio Quinze&Milan, which Arne Quinze still heads as art director.

From the very beginning, the Quinze&Milan studio positioned itself as a “creator of atmosphere”: its furniture was not an end in itself, but a way of life that challenged the reigning minimalism in design. The resulting shapes were wild and sexy, carefree and free, loud and untamed. Very soon, journalists dubbed Queens “the bad boy of the design world” and “a Prada lover in Punk style.”

Today, the studio employs more than 60 architects, developers and designers, and the range of services has begun to include design in the broadest sense of the word: from creating brand books to shoe design and architectural design. However, the face and bearer of the philosophy of the Quinze&Milan studio is still Arne Quinze, the main “pop star of the furniture crowd.” “I never studied. I never knew how to work on a computer. Cars are too slow - my thought is faster. And I always have a notepad and pencil to write it down.”

For him there are no boundaries, nothing is impossible. Someday he dreams of building his own city. In the meantime, Queens furniture can be found in all significant buildings of the last decade. And in general, this Belgian, who looks more like the leader of a hardcore band, considers himself, first of all, an artist. As a homeless teenager, he was a master of street painting - graffiti. Apparently, this is where the habit of flaunting oneself comes from, the thirst for a wide audience.

FABIO NOVEMBRE

A country: Italy

Carier start:
He opened his own studio in Milan in 1994

Fabio is a maverick designer. But at the same time he respects Marc Newson, Ron Arad, Tom Dixon. All of them, by the way, live and work in England. But Novembre is an Italian to the core, so in contrast to Dixon's engineering approach or Arad's computer-assisted calculated harmony, his creative method is based on sensuality and emotion: “The longer I live, the more I become a technocrat. And the more I submit to the power of technology, the more my objects are connected to feelings and instincts.”

As the art director of Bisazza, Fabio Novembre erected a real Monument of Love from mosaics. The toilet and bidet VOID for Flaminia seem to have dents from touching the bowls that have not yet dried.

It is probably difficult to name another designer who would be so inspired by the human body. Starting from the roundness of his own wife and ending with abstract female and male butts - he sculpturally captured their realistic outlines in the HIM&HER chairs for Casamania. Otherwise, the outlines of the chairs are recognizable, textbook - it turned out to be a kind of Verner Panton “ponovembrevsky”. Instead of the back of a sofa for Driade there is a silhouette of a woman in a relaxed and seductive pose, and in general, human features are involuntarily visible in every armchair or seat: nose, cheekbones, lips, shoulders.

Simple chopped forms are not his thing. In Novembre, everything flows, changes, lives, pulsates: the interior of the shoe boutique is entangled in an endless ribbon of shelves, the headboard of the bed smoothly merges into the frame, the shape of the faucet is such that it seems as if it is flowing out of the sink along with the water, and the glass tabletop is on dozens of tentacle legs - you can almost see how it sways at the slightest movement of air - in fact it is very stable. “I love designing spaces where a lot of people can gather—places for countless meetings. After all, the meaning of life for an individualist designer is communication with others.”

CHRISTOPHER HALL

A country: Türkiye

Carier start:
1988

New Zealand designer Christopher Hall moved to Istanbul in the early 2000s, driven by a great interest in Eastern culture. Over time, he became so deeply imbued with it that he is now implementing his most ambitious projects here in the East.

Among his customers are several Arab princes. The hall builds its interiors on a combination of modern European design and oriental architectural traditions. This is clearly visible not only in his designs, but also in the furniture he designs, coming up with intricate metal structures based on arabesques.

JONATHAN ADLER

A country: USA

Carier start:
2002

Born in New Jersey. At the age of eleven, he sat down at the pottery wheel for the first time, years later he unsuccessfully tried to study to become a lawyer, worked in cinema and eventually became a designer. The fact that he is self-taught did not stop Jonathan Adler from founding his own company producing ceramics and other accessories, opening twenty stores and a decorating bureau in addition.

His designs are often based on the elegant design of the 1950s, but through the generous use of loud colors, graphic patterns and provocative modern art, his interiors are extravagant and exuberant.

AXEL VERVOORDT

A country: Belgium

Carier start:
opened his company in 1968

Currently, Axel Vervoordt's company is based in a former distillery near Antwerp.

In the 1970s, the designer bought and restored an entire block in Antwerp based on paintings by Vermeer and Pieter de Hooch. In addition, Vervoordt produces furniture himself: plump couches and eared armchairs in linen covers, which perfectly complement the antique sideboards and tables made of aged wood, which his projects rarely do without.

Vervoordt's interiors are often sparsely furnished, but since he selects things with character and history, they lack the coldness characteristic of minimalism.

THOMAS PHYSANT

A country: USA

Carier start:
founded the Thomas Pheasant bureau in 1980

American decorator and furniture designer - in this capacity he collaborates with the Baker and McGuire brands. He doesn’t like anything bright; his designs are dominated by warm creamy shades and ivory, and the emphasis is not on color, but on texture.

In terms of style, it is a quintessential American classic, with a bit of Art Deco, Beaux-Arts and 1950s French modernism. However, Fizant himself says that he was most influenced by his acquaintance with the culture of the East. He believes that a good interior should evoke peace. Quite in the spirit of Zen Buddhism.

the studio was founded in 1996

Two English designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby work under the same brand – BarberOsgerby. The men studied architecture together at the Royal College of Art in London. After graduating in 1996, they founded their own design bureau.

The very first joint work - the Loop table (for Isokon Plus) - entered the permanent collection of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Barber and Osgerby run the company Universal Design Studio, which specializes in architectural and interior design. They worked on the interiors of Stella McCartney's stores and Damien Hirst's famous Pharmacy bar.

In the field of product design, Barber and Osgerby created a series of Lunar bathroom accessories for Authentics, and designed the new Ipsei bottle for the Coca-Cola company. Their clients include many other respected brands: Cappellini, Established & Sons, Flos. The Glove chair they created for Swedese was named the best at the London 100% Design 2007 exhibition. And in Miami they were awarded the title “designers of the future.”

Later, a Chanel suit became a real symbol of a generation and a symbol of a certain status, the famous “little black dress” is still considered the standard of style and beauty, and collarless jackets trimmed with braid are a real legend!

Another name in the fashion world that is here to stay forever. Christian started by selling his paintings and clothing designs in order to earn at least some money after his father went bankrupt. In this simple way, he met the leading fashion designers of that time in the fashion world, after which he began his career at the Lucien Lelong fashion house.

Clothes from Christian become a breath of air and tenderness, which was so necessary in the harsh post-war years. Today, as then, the house of Dior is at the height of its glory, and under its name not only clothes are produced, but also perfumes, cosmetics and various accessories.

A student, and later an assistant and artistic director of the company, the founder of the Yves Saint Laurent fashion house, as well as the creator of the new fashionable image “Le Smoking”, which amazed other designers and became the main trend in the world of women's fashion at that time.

An American fashion designer who produces special fashion collections filled with relaxed style and the spirit of the culture of the American West.
