Lightweight work clothes against midges. Anti-mosquito suits

Brother

Trouble in the form of a ruthless vile creature is an indispensable condition for any outdoor recreation. Painful bites can ruin your favorite fishing trip, exciting hike, or fun picnic. There are many products, both folk and popular manufacturers, but not all guarantee complete protection.

One of the most popular and reliable ways to protect yourself from annoying, ubiquitous blood-sucking insects is a special suit. Buying it is quite an expensive pleasure, not available to everyone. It is much cheaper to make such a protective agent yourself.

Types of suits

Today, a large number of protective clothing against different types of insects are offered for sale. They are mainly divided into three groups:

  • children's;
  • women's;
  • men's

Men's ones are most often produced in the form of camouflage, which is especially convenient for fishermen and hunters. Since this coloring is not only convenient for being in natural conditions, but also very practical - it does not get dirty in the dirt (more precisely, stains on such fabric are invisible), it allows you to sneak up on animals during a hunt.

Women's suits are more varied in colors, although camouflage types of fabrics are mainly offered. Due to the special cut, such clothes are comfortable for a woman’s figure without restricting movement.

Children are the most defenseless victims of midge and mosquito bites. Special suits are also produced for them. They are very similar to protective clothing for adults, but are made from lighter fabrics and allow the child's entire body to be covered. Also, many manufacturers add warning marks to their costumes, which is especially convenient for parents who are afraid of losing their child in the forest.

Short description

In most cases, suits are made of thick cotton. This fabric allows fresh air to pass through to the body, which is especially important in hot summer weather. At the same time, the access of midges and mosquitoes to the body is completely excluded - they cannot bite through the fleecy fabric or penetrate under the thick, dense cuffs.

Suits that protect against midges and mosquitoes come complete with a net. This ensures that your face is also free from insects. The dense thick fabric does not interfere with breathing; bloodsuckers will not be able to penetrate through it.

A few words about care - clothes that protect against mosquitoes and midges are washed in washing machines, but only if the manufacturer allows it. The instructions for the purchased protective outfit must be strictly followed - this will help to use the suit for a very long time.

Suit Bodyguard and Tundra

Fabric for protective clothing

Special fabric produced for sewing clothes that protect against the attacks of annoying midges (mosquitoes, midges, horseflies, gadflies) has its own characteristics. One of them is weave (the so-called “chain mail”).

The name chain mail, which accurately describes the properties of the fabric, comes from the special weave. An ingenious weaving of threads in the form of a fine mesh ensures constant access of fresh air to the body, which is important for people who sweat excessively.

The thin lattice weave makes the fabric indispensable for protection against annoying midges and mosquitoes. There is no way for insects to penetrate through it, but such a convenient pleasure is quite expensive.

Leg protection

Is it possible to create ideal protection against midges or mosquitoes with your own hands at home? Of course, with a little effort and imagination, it won’t take much time.

As you know, most often bloodsucking insects try to attack the thigh area. It is this area of the body that will have to be protected more carefully. Trousers made of thick fabric are ideal for this purpose. The ubiquitous midge can penetrate the cuff, so be sure to prevent this possibility with the help of a thick elastic band.

This is very simple to do - wrap your leg tightly around the ankle over the fabric and sew or tie the ends of the elastic. Of course, the appearance of the trousers will not be very aesthetic, but the legs will be reliably protected. Flaws:

  • poor air ventilation;
  • excessive sweating;
  • discomfort during active movements in hot weather.

Upper body protection

We've sorted out the trousers, it's time to move on to the upper body. It goes without saying that the jacket should also be thick, with long sleeves. Camouflage clothing is perfect; it is thick and comfortable.

The ubiquitous midge can easily overcome the barrier on the sleeves; it is better to additionally protect them with thick elastic bands. If this is not possible, then be sure to fasten the buttons on the cuffs.

Another important point is that it is better if the jacket is fastened not with buttons or buttons, but with a zipper. It's convenient and reliable. The presence of a hood is also important. In case of very large concentrations of midges and mosquitoes, it will be enough to pull it over your head and tighten the laces at the ends (provided that there are any).

Practical advice - it is better to take a larger jacket. This will allow you to put on a shirt or sweater when it gets cold, and will also not hinder your movement when walking quickly or doing active physical work.

You can increase protection by applying a small amount of insect repellent to your suit. The effect of such aerosols is very short-lived, but if there is an extreme accumulation of midges, then it is advisable to stock up on additional preparations.

Hand protection

It is especially important to carefully protect your fingers from midges and mosquitoes. There is little pleasure in the fact that you have to do something in nature, constantly scratching your itchy skin until it bleeds. Regular agricultural gloves will help here.

Ugly? But it is reliable, cheap and practical. Especially if you do this - cut off the fingertips of the gloves by about a centimeter. Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate this advice, because an indispensable condition for them is the ability to put on bait or quickly remove the caught catch from the hook.

Midges will not be able to bite through the thick fabric of gloves, but no one guarantees that they will not be able to crawl into the gap between the jacket sleeve and the mitten. What to do here? Remember the previous tip about dressing in larger sizes. By pulling the sleeves down and tucking gloves under the cuffs, you can create an insurmountable barrier against the ruthless bloodsuckers.

Head net

Now comes the most important stage in making a suit - head protection. If the back of the head and forehead can at least be hidden with a hood, then there is always a risk that a midge will get into the eye, causing very painful sensations.

To prevent this from happening, you will have to make a special mosquito net. If you have any sewing skills, you can sew something stylish and original; everyone else will have to be content with the simplest device in the form of a bag.

This, to put it mildly, unoriginal mosquito net will perfectly protect against midges and mosquitoes, as well as other nasties that love to spoil your vacation in the forest or near a pond. Here you also need your own trick - on the neck the mesh should fit tightly to the skin - you need to secure it with a scarf, elastic band or elastic soft tape.

Another good option, suitable for the summer heat, is to attach a mosquito net to a hat or Panama hat. The result will be a double benefit - the sun will not burn the back of your head, and insects will not be able to ruin your stay in the fresh air.

This is how you can easily and simply make your own protective suit that will reliably protect you from the invasion of small and large insects. It will cost very little, so this option is perfect for every lover of a pleasant time in nature.

Purpose, fabric characteristics

A protective suit, which guarantees complete protection from annoying ones, is a fairly popular and reliable way to protect yourself from unpleasant ones. You can buy it in a store, order it online, or make it yourself.

Special clothing against mosquitoes is divided into 3 groups: men's, women's and children's. Most often, finished products use cotton fabric in camouflage colors, which is convenient for hunters and fishermen who wear such clothing in natural conditions. It is practical because... dirt is not visible on it and helps to “merge” with the trees, which is important for hunters who sneak up on animals.

The mosquito net suit is made of thick cotton fabric that allows air to pass through, which is of great importance in hot summer weather. But mosquitoes and midges will not be able to bite through it due to its fluffiness and thickness. Some manufacturers impregnate them with special water-repellent solutions, so the material hardly gets dirty.

Women's and children's products are more varied in color, are usually sewn from thinner and lighter fabric, and cover the entire body.

On a note!

To make it easier for parents to pay attention, children's clothing is supplemented with sewn-on signal strips that are clearly visible in the forest and glow in the dark.

Caring for protective suits is quite simple; they can be easily washed in a washing machine, if the instructions allow. Manufacturers promise a long service life if all rules of use are followed.

Details of protective suits

The main feature of anti-mosquito clothing is a special fabric that has a special “chainmail” weave of threads. The plexus looks like a fine mesh, which provides good air access to the body, which is important for people in hot weather and allows them to sweat less. The chain mail suit does not allow insects to penetrate the fabric, however, due to this feature, the cost of protective clothing increases.

All parts of the costume: pants, jacket, hood are trimmed with knitted cuffs or elastic bands that prevent the penetration of insects.

Often sold separately, a mosquito repellent jacket is made using the anorak model: it is worn over the head and has no fasteners. Many suits are also equipped with a mosquito net or mosquito net: it must be put on from above over the head, and it protects the face and neck well from the “attempt” of bloodsuckers.

Popular protective suits from manufacturers

Ready-made clothing against mosquitoes and ticks allows tourists, fishermen or hunters to protect themselves from insect attacks. Let's look at the most popular models and photos of protective suits.

Bodyguard

Design differences:

  • the suit consists of 2 layers;
  • lower body mesh (100% cotton) – thermal underwear that allows air to pass through well;
  • The upper one (100% polyester) is anti-mosquito, finer mesh.

Basic elements: trousers, shirt, gloves, hood with mesh. In addition to protection from mosquitoes, such a suit with mesh provides additional thermoregulation and ventilation: in hot weather it prevents the body from overheating, and in cold weather it protects against hypothermia.

The cost of the Bodyguard suit is about 4,400 rubles.

Biostop

The Biostop mosquito and tick repellent suit is popular among people who, for work or leisure, are in places where blood-sucking insects are active. It provides 100% protection of the entire body from mosquitoes, flies, ticks, horse flies and midges.

On a note!

The clothing has a highly ergonomic cut, it is comfortable to wear, and also does not rustle when moving, which is especially important for hunters who can silently sneak up on prey.

Children's models for the age of 3-6 years are also produced; they are made of softer, water-repellent fabric that absolutely does not hinder the child's movement and does not cause excessive sweating during increased activity and games.

The cost of Biostop Optimum, Pro, etc. suits depends on the size: adults - about 5000-6500 rubles, children - 3650-4000 rubles.

The Taiga anti-encephalitis children's suit is produced by the Wolverine company, which also produces adult protective clothing.

Advantages of clothes of this brand:

  • the suits are comfortable to wear and have a loose fit that does not interfere with the child’s activity;
  • has additional tapes and cuffs that secure sleeves and trousers, helping to protect against the penetration of ticks and other small insects;
  • external trap pockets complicate the movement of ticks and are impregnated with an acaricidal substance that paralyzes pests;
  • The base of the fabric is 100% cotton, which provides thermoregulation of the body and does not cause an allergic reaction in the young body.

The cost of the suit depends on the model and size - in the range of 4300-5000 rubles.

Anti-mosquito

The Anti-Mosquito suit consists of 2 parts made of synthetic mesh: a jacket and trousers. To be worn exclusively over regular clothing. Thanks to the small cells in the mesh, mosquitoes and midges cannot bite or crawl into the human body. Cost about 1000 rubles.

Mountain suits

The Gorka suit was created back in the Soviet period specifically for military personnel in high altitude conditions. It is highly durable and insulated with fleece inserts. Such clothing is designed to be worn in rain and cold, has reinforced details on the elbows, knees and always a hood, where a double layer of fabric is made to protect against sharp stones and cuts.

The fabric is used on a cotton basis with the addition of low-flammability threads, the color is usually general-arms, camouflage colors are not used. The cost depends on the model, size and degree of insulation: 3200-4700 rubles.

All of the listed models of suits will help protect a person from attacks by other flying and blood-sucking insects. When choosing a model, one should take into account the natural and weather conditions of their use, as well as the convenience and comfortable sensations for a person. Particular care should be taken in selecting such items of clothing for children who move more actively and sweat more.

First, a short lyrical introduction, which, however, you can skip.
I often remember the situation that my friend and I found ourselves in in the Pskov region. After the cold May, a sharp warming came and a massive breeding of mosquitoes occurred. The weather was absolutely windless, and there was no escape from mosquitoes anywhere. We are accustomed to the fact that usually with the onset of heat, mosquitoes “go” to damp and shady places, to bushes, alder forests, tall coastal grass, but, probably, there were too many of them, so they were everywhere. We tried to stop in open places, but even on a hot afternoon, a veil of mosquitoes hung over the sun-warmed meadow. If you sat down, you could see a gray veil over the tops of the blades of grass, similar to creeping smoke. The closer to the river, the more mosquitoes there were; there were especially many of them above the water near the shore. Only in the middle of the river were there no mosquitoes in the air, but even then there was no peace from them, since in the kayak itself there were always several dozen of these vile creatures that bit our legs. And if we approached the rubble, then another cloud of bloodsuckers was waiting for us there. The same thing happened when approaching the coastal bushes and when landing on the shore. It was possible to relax only at night in a tent, but as the sun rose, it became so hot in the tent that it was impossible to stay in it. I had to wear trousers and a rain jacket with a hood all the time, despite the heat, and I had to move all the time, because when I was at rest, mosquitoes would bite through my old jeans. There were not only a lot of mosquitoes, they were very active and aggressive, they crawled under the hood, into the eyes, into the nose, and even into the mouth while eating. Unfortunately, we did not take mosquito nets with us, and the bottle of repellent was used up on the first day. As evening approached, the situation worsened: new hordes of mosquitoes crawled out of the damp bushes, which covered the tarpaulin of my orange tent so thickly that it seemed gray. Each of us had a personal cloud of mosquitoes hanging over us. Over every thing lying on the ground (even over the gasoline stove) there was a separate cap of mosquitoes. When we looked at a bush or tree in the twilight, they seemed velvety to us, since dozens and hundreds of these creatures were sitting on every branch and on every leaf. As soon as I caught a branch, another cloud of mosquitoes flew from it, which made it seem as if the crown of the tree was forking in two. The fire not only did not frighten the mosquitoes, but even attracted them. Mosquitoes were not bothered by either the smoke of the fire or the smell of gasoline. It seemed that the next day would come and it would get easier, but it didn’t get any easier. Then we began to wait for a hot afternoon in the hope that the mosquitoes would hide in the shade. Midday came, the mosquitoes actually became a little less, but in their place, without giving us a break, gadflies and horseflies flew in and, even worse, midges appeared. This terrible nightmare lasted for almost four days, I already felt hysteria starting somewhere inside me.
And then the weather changed, a light breeze appeared, which gave us the opportunity to stop in open places and undress to our swimming trunks without fear of being bitten. Weather with daily temperature fluctuations has settled in, with cool nights and cool fresh mornings and an almost complete absence of mosquitoes in the mornings.
I have had to find myself in similar situations more than once, but I remember this one most vividly.

Now without emotions about our common enemy
Gnus is a collective concept that includes many flying blood-sucking insects such as mosquitoes, midges, midges, gadflies, horseflies, etc. The adjective from the word “vile” is vile, which means disgusting, disgusting. Indeed, a person’s first reaction to these insects is a feeling of disgust and disgust. But the scale of the evil caused by vileness goes far beyond psychological discomfort. Mosquitoes and some other representatives of this group of insects are capable of transmitting dozens of different pathogens of vector-borne diseases to humans: malaria, filariasis, encephalitis, various fevers, etc. Without going into the wilds of epidemiology, it should be said that the diseases mentioned above are found mainly in tropical and subtropical latitudes, and in Russia - in regions with a warm and humid climate. As you move north (and mosquitoes are found even beyond the Arctic Circle), the likelihood of “catching” any disease from mosquitoes decreases, and in the territory of the Republic of Belarus and the adjacent regions is practically zero. But this does not mean that mosquitoes have ceased to be the worst enemy for tourists and other lovers of outdoor recreation. Everyone knows that at the sites of mosquito bites, severe and sometimes unbearable itching occurs. People prone to allergies may experience severe allergic reactions. Multiple mosquito bites cause intoxication of the body, including death. If a person who is in nature for several days is not properly protected from midges, then his life turns into a complete nightmare. And it is not at all necessary to go to the tundra for this nightmare: all this horror can be experienced on the territory of the Republic of Belarus in May-July.

There are several methods of relative protection from midges. Let's look at this in more detail.

1. Avoid going out into nature during the period when mosquitoes are most active, and in those places where there are especially many mosquitoes.
The method is good, but unacceptable for a number of reasons. This method should only be used when planning children's trips.

2. Proper placement of the camp.
To do this, you need to know that mosquitoes are most active in the temperature range from 17-18 to 24-25 degrees. Above and below the specified temperature limits, mosquito activity begins to decrease. All other things being equal, there are fewer mosquitoes in dry places than in damp places. That is why on a hot summer afternoon the bulk of mosquitoes are found in damp and damp alder forests, in coastal tall grass and dense bushes, especially on the shady side. At the same time, in a clearing in a pine forest there may be no mosquitoes at all. But in the evening, when the sun sets and the air temperature drops significantly, a light fog rises from the lake, and dew appears in the meadow near the shore, mosquitoes move towards the high, sun-warmed shore, and in the meadow near the river there are practically no mosquitoes. True, this is observed when there is a large difference in day and night temperatures. It is also necessary to take into account that mosquitoes do not linger in open spaces even with a slight breeze.

3. Use of fumigants.
While camping, it is possible to use chemical fumigants, but their effectiveness is only high in enclosed spaces. In an open space, even in a calm environment, the effect of fumigants is more psychological.

4. Use of chemical repellents. Yes, indeed, repellents in many situations are the only and, fortunately, effective means of combating midges. But: repellents never act as effectively and for as long as advertised. It is well known that one of the factors that attracts mosquitoes is human body odor. If you wash yourself clean with soap, apply repellent and just sit, the repellent effect will be long-lasting. But this rarely happens when hiking: you constantly have to do some kind of work and sweat, and it’s not always possible to wash yourself all the time, so the repellent is effective for no more than 30 minutes. In addition, repellents have virtually no effect on horseflies and gadflies. In most repellents, the active ingredient is DEET (diethyltoluolamide). The duration of action of the drug is directly dependent on the percentage of diethyltoluolamide itself. But in the same way, depending on the concentration, the toxic effect exerted by the repellent on the human body also increases. In addition, there is an irritating effect when DEET gets on mucous membranes and, especially, in the eyes. In the literature there are recommendations for the use of essential oils of clove, lavender, mint, lemon balm, various colognes, etc. as repellents. Tested - ineffective. You can often come across irresponsible advice to protect yourself from mosquitoes with the smoke of a fire; such fires even have a name - “smoke fire”. Such advice usually comes from indoor theoretic tourists.

5. Ultrasonic repellents.
How cool it would be to hang a keychain around your neck that emits ultrasonic waves that repel mosquitoes within a radius of one and a half meters! But for now this remains a bright dream for many tourists. I have tested three types of ultrasonic repellents: two made in Belarus, the third made in the USA. The effect is the same: the dog reacts (which means the device is working), but mosquitoes, unfortunately, do not react.

6. ordinary tourist clothes.
Yes, a good jacket with a hood and a mosquito net and trousers made of thick fabric protect almost 100% from mosquitoes (although midges get under the cuffs, but this can be dealt with). But, unfortunately, this is not a solution to the problem. Traditional clothing protects against blood-sucking insects due to the density and thickness of the fabric, which mosquitoes do not bite through. The main disadvantage of such clothing is its heat-insulating properties and the lack of air movement in the space between the clothing and the body (ventilation). In such clothes, a person overheats, sweats and feels discomfort, and when performing physical work, especially in high temperatures, it is impossible and even dangerous to be in such clothes - heat stroke can occur with loss of consciousness and other troubles.
You need clothing that reliably protects against all types of blood-sucking insects and at the same time:

A) does not interfere with air movement (ventilation)
b) has extremely low thermal insulation properties
c) protects from direct sunlight.

And there are such clothes!

The proposed clothing is an alternative way to protect against blood-sucking insects. Three models of such clothing are produced with the code names: “SCAFANDR”, “SCAFANDR-LIGHT” and “SCAFANDR-RESERVE”. All three models have been field tested and have proven themselves to be excellent!
The “space suit” model is a two-layer suit made of mesh fabrics with different mesh sizes. The outer layer is made of fine mesh, through which mosquitoes, midges, and ticks cannot crawl. The inner layer is a mesh made of thick thread with a large mesh (up to 1 centimeter), which does not allow the outer mesh to lie directly on the surface of the skin, and therefore mosquitoes, horseflies and gadflies cannot reach the human body with their stings.

The inner mesh is soft, which gives a feeling of comfort when putting the suit on a naked body. This suit, worn on a naked body, almost completely protects against insect bites.

The advantage of the suit is not only effective protection against blood-sucking insects, but also a number of other qualities. The fabric practically does not interfere with air movement and is well ventilated, so even during normal walking the body feels a pleasant air movement. The outer layer of fabric significantly blocks the sun's rays, which prevents overheating and sunburn. The “spacesuit-light” model is a lightweight version of the previous model. “Spacesuit-light” is also a two-layer suit made of a small outer mosquito mesh and a slightly larger inner mesh.

The total thickness of the mesh is slightly less than that of the “spacesuit” model, but the protective effect is enhanced by the fact that the top layer slides freely over the inner layer and prevents the mosquito from reaching the skin with its proboscis. Only if the fabric of the suit is tightly stretched and pressed against the body, in places where it fits tightly, it is possible for a mosquito to “bite through” the fabric. Even minor hand movements, walking and generally active human behavior deprive the mosquito of this opportunity. A light spacesuit suit, worn over a regular T-shirt, reliably protects against blood-sucking insects. Just like the previous model, the “spacesuit-light” does not interfere with air movement and ventilation.
“Spacesuit-reserve” model. The suit is made of a single-layer mosquito net and provides additional protection against mosquitoes and other insects. A “reserve suit” worn on a naked body does not protect the body from mosquito bites in those places where the fabric touches directly the body (shoulders, upper back). This model is more effective during active human movements (walking, running, any physical work) due to the constant sliding of the suit fabric over the body. The “reserve spacesuit” is even more effective if it is worn over clothing. If a person is wearing light trousers and a shirt that do not protect against mosquitoes, then, in combination with a “reserve” protective suit, the effectiveness of protection can reach 100%. At the same time, the heat transfer and “breathing” properties of clothing do not suffer.
All three models have a hood and mosquito net. The design of the hood and mosquito net is such that it allows you to keep your hands with a bowl and spoon inside the mosquito net while eating.

All three models effectively protect against gadflies, horse flies, midges, and ticks. If necessary, you can climb into water in these clothes: the fabric is non-hygroscopic and dries quickly.
