How to do highlighting at home? Various ways to highlight at home. How to make a cap for highlighting at home What can be done with highlighting

February 23

You can freshen up your look even at home. A highlighting cap, as well as the photos and videos provided in the article, will help you do this without errors, quickly and without difficulty.

What is highlighting through a cap?

The process of lightening individual strands on the head in the world of hairdressing is called “highlighting”. To do this, craftsmen separate individual curls from the hair and apply a bleaching compound to them.

To prevent the dye from getting onto other strands and the highlighting from being “smeared,” the treated curls need to be isolated.

  • There are two methods for this:
  • wrapping in strips of foil. It requires little skill and professionalism and is used primarily in a beauty salon;

selective lightening of hair through a cap. The method is outdated, but simple and does not require special skills. It is more popular in home coloring. Advice.

Highlights can be used to disguise gray hair. Lightened strands will hide this defect and visually add volume to the hairstyle.

Who is it suitable for? Highlighting a cap will add zest and individuality to everyone, regardless of the shade of hair. It is worth noting that On dark hair the coloring looks more impressive.

It is not necessary to highlight all of your hair; you can do it selectively. For example, apply several lightened strands near the face or along the parting. Highlighting with a cap is not performed on long hair, only on short or medium hair (in a beauty salon). This will protect you from pain and pulled out clumps of hair.

Advantages and disadvantages

The procedure for dyeing strands through a special cap has significant advantages:

  • you get a fashionable hairstyle, an updated look, while causing minimal damage to your curls, unlike all-over dyeing;
  • the dyeing process can be performed at home, the steps are so simple that special professionalism and skills are not required;
  • when dyeing at home, the foil may move, which will affect the final result, while the cap fits tightly on the head;
  • a special cap can be used many times, if you use it correctly and wash it after painting.

If we talk about the disadvantages of this outdated method, it is worth focusing on the following facts:

  • Highlighting through a cap is not carried out on long curls. Owners of thick hair of medium length will also have to refuse this procedure;
  • It’s difficult to experiment with a special cap; the holes for pulling out the strands are spaced evenly, at a certain distance;
  • if during the procedure you pull out a strand that is too thick, it is impossible to return it back, the accessory will have to be removed and the whole process repeated again;
  • If the hair is naturally tangled, then bleaching can be quite painful, and incorrect actions by the performer will cause even more tangling.

Despite these disadvantages, the cap method is the best option for beginners and non-professionals.

What to choose: cap or foil

To carry out the popular lightening of curls, use foil or a special hat. What are their differences and main advantages?

  1. For professional hairdressers, it is better to choose foil: there is an opportunity to experiment with the look; it is permissible to use several colors for dyeing at the same time.
  2. Highlighting on a hat is easier to do; the performer is required to be attentive and follow the sequence of actions. Plus, the procedure takes less time; there is no need to separate each strand, dye it and wrap it in foil.
  3. If you don’t have enough time or money to visit a specialist, the cap option is for you! Painting is done at home, the cap can be reused, depending on its material and strength.
  4. When pulling strands through a hat, it is almost impossible to perfectly correct the overgrown roots; the necessary strands are not visible under the accessory.
  5. Lightening with foil is not accompanied by painful sensations; in the case of a hat, discomfort is possible.

And finally, the most important criterion that influences the final choice of method is hair length. For those with short haircuts, dyeing with foil is difficult; in this case, even some hairdressers turn to a hat.

But for strands above 15–20 cm, the choice is made in favor of foil.

Selection and cost of a hat

A cap for highlighting is sold in a specialized store for hairdressers. This can be a reusable rubberized or silicone accessory. It hugs your head tightly and will not move when you pull out the curls.

selective lightening of hair through a cap. The method is outdated, but simple and does not require special skills. It is more popular in home coloring. The cost of a silicone cap is 300 rubles and more, depending on the manufacturer.

A hat with a loose brim is better. The edge can be bent, thereby preventing the client from getting paint on the face. If you do not plan to use the hat in the future, choose a disposable accessory made of polyethylene.

Such hats are secured with ties, but in terms of tightness of fit to the hair, in comparison with a rubberized cap, they cannot be compared. Disposable highlighting caps are sold in sets of 4–12 pieces. The cost of the set is from 240 rubles. Choose a painting accessory with a hook.

This will not affect the price, but will save you the hassle of finding it.

Judging by user reviews, a reusable silicone cap is much more practical, reliable and easier to use than a disposable one. Another tip: hats come with or without holes.

If you don’t want to pierce them yourself, which sometimes causes a little difficulty, choose the first option. However, in the second case, you will make holes of the required diameter, no more, no less.

We make an important accessory ourselves If purchasing a cap for painting doesn’t go well, don’t worry, make it yourself using available materials.

  • There are several options: From a thick package.

  • Take a bag suitable for the size of your head, cut it so that it does not fall on your face during the procedure. The holes are made directly when pulling out the curls, and not in advance. From a swimming cap in the pool.

Attention, the shower cap is not suitable! It should be rubberized and fit snugly to the head. Holes are made in it in advance, and only then can it be put on the head.

Home painting technology

The process of selectively lightening strands at home using a special hat is simple. The main thing is to understand the nuances of the procedure and follow the recommendations from professionals.

  • To paint at home, you need to prepare the following items and tools:
  • special cap;
  • container for mixing dye and developer;
  • dye several shades lighter than natural hair or lightening powder;
  • oxide 3–12% depending on the structure of the hair and the original tone;
  • a pair of gloves;
  • plastic cap, bag to enhance the lightening reaction;
  • brush for coloring;
  • comb;
  • shampoo and hair conditioner;
  • an old towel or cover over your shoulders.

Important! For brunettes, brown-haired women, and those with coarse hair, choose a 12% oxide, and for blondes, a 3% oxidizer is enough.

Detailed coloring instructions:

  1. Comb your curls well with a comb. The hair should be dry and washed 3-4 days before the day of painting.
  2. Place a highlighting cap on your head. It should fit snugly and not dangle.
  3. Insert the hook into the hole in the cap and remove the strand. The thickness of the strands and how long to pull them depends on your own preferences. Do the procedure all over your head.
  4. Prepare a clarifier in a plastic (glass) container.
  5. Apply bleach to the threaded strands. Do this evenly, without unnecessary savings.
  6. To speed up the chemical reaction and enhance the effect of the bleach, wrap your dyed hair in plastic wrap or put on a bag.
  7. After some time recommended by the bleach manufacturer, remove the plastic. Look how light the strands are. If necessary, hold the product for another 5 minutes. Please note that the total exposure time should not exceed 45 minutes, otherwise you risk burning your hair and turning it into “straw”.
  8. Without removing the cap, rinse off the bleach under a stream of warm water.
  9. Remove the accessory and rinse your hair again, but this time using shampoo.
  10. To heal weakened curls, make a mask or use a balm.

To smooth out possible differences in hair color and eliminate possible yellowness, use a tinting balm, silver or purple shampoo.

Highlighting your hair using a special cap will not cause you any difficulties if you strictly adhere to the rules and technology of its implementation. The result of painting will refresh and rejuvenate the appearance, giving it playfulness and individuality. In addition, this lightening technique helps to hide gray hair and turn from brunette to blonde with less harm to your curls.

How to do hair highlights at home on a cap.

Until recently, home highlighting of strands remained an almost impossible task. But with the advent of professional hair coloring kits on the modern market, the salon procedure quickly migrated to the bathrooms of ordinary girls. How to do highlighting at home and not go wrong? Our master class will help you with this!

Traditional highlighting at home

Traditional or classic highlighting means a procedure during which the master uses a special cap or foil. Let's look at each option in more detail.

Highlighting with foil

You will need:

  • Composition for bleaching strands (powder + oxidizing agent). For fine hair, the percentage of oxidizing agent in the powder should be 4%, for light hair – 6-8%, for dark hair – 12%;
  • Brush for applying paint;
  • Foil. This can be either a special foil for highlighting or a household option;
  • Two combs - with a narrow long handle and for separating strands;
  • Gloves;
  • Towel.

How the process works:

2. If you are using food foil, cut it into strips. They should be 23 cm longer than your hair. The edge of each piece should be turned inward by 0.5-1 cm. This bend will prevent the bleach from leaking onto the scalp and neighboring strands.

3. Prepare the coloring composition according to the instructions.

4. Divide all your hair into zones. Pin each one with a hairpin.

5. Using a long comb, separate a not very thick strand from your hair.

6. Place a piece of foil under it. The pocket should be at the base of the hair.

7. Lubricate the strand with the dye mixture.

8. Fold the foil in half or cover your hair with a new piece.

9. Step back about 2 cm up and paint the next strand of hair.

10. Follow this procedure all over your head.

11. Wait about 30 minutes, unwrap each strand and rinse with water without removing the foil.

12. Remove the foil. Wash your hair with shampoo and nourishing balm.

13. Let your hair dry naturally.

Highlighting with a cap

Home highlighting through a cap is incredibly popular among women with short haircuts (up to 15 cm). Of course, you will hardly be able to find an easier way of coloring!

You will need:

  • Gloves;
  • Brush for applying paint;
  • A special hat with small holes. You can also use a swimming cap or a regular plastic bag with holes cut in a checkerboard pattern;
  • Comb with a narrow long handle;
  • Paint container (glass or plastic);
  • Towel.

How the process works:

1. Throw a towel over your shoulders.

2. Place the cap on your head and use the tip of a comb to pull small strands of hair through the holes. For light highlighting, you can use every third hole, for medium - every second, for intensive - absolutely everything.

3. Prepare the coloring mixture according to the instructions.

4. Apply it to your hair with a brush.

5. For light lightening (by 1 tone), the mixture is kept for only 15 minutes, for strong lightening - at least 45 minutes.

6. Rinse your hair with water. There is no need to take off your cap.

7. Dry your head with a towel, remove the cap and wash your hair with shampoo and a nourishing mask.

Now you know how to make beautiful highlights at home, and you can experiment with your hair to your heart’s content. Good luck to you!

In order for the result to be high-quality and beautiful, the work must be carried out by a master who has considerable experience in such matters. However, it is quite possible to do highlighting at home, and even for yourself, you just need to stock up on all the necessary tools, devices and patience.

History and features of hairstyle

Hair highlighting began for the first time in the middle of the last century. Model and film actress Brigitte Bardot was the first to appear before the general public in a similar image. In those early years, the technology was kept secret from ordinary people, so only the upper strata of society could afford to wear such a hairstyle. However, both in those distant times and today, this method of coloring had the same pros and cons. The essence of highlighting is that some strands are highlighted to one degree or another. Consequently, this process leads to the hair being burned, becoming more brittle and dry. Therefore, after you dye your hair in a salon or do highlighting at home, you should carefully care for your hair so that it looks not only stylish and fashionable, but also healthy.

Visual effects

Once you have determined that your hair is strong and not prone to dryness and brittleness, you can start doing highlighting at home. The photos given in the article show that even with your own hands and without work experience, you can create a wide variety of visual effects by coloring certain strands in different colors. The most interesting thing is that it is highlighting, and not dyeing the entire head of hair, that creates the effect of additional volume. This method can be used on any haircut, regardless of the length and structure of the hair. Visually, the hairstyle becomes more voluminous and voluminous, and gray strands, even if some of them are not dyed, become completely invisible. We also note that highlighting your hair at home allows you to carry out the dyeing procedure quite rarely. When the roots grow back, they do not look unsightly. This only adds more charm and originality to the image. And if you have finally decided to color your curls this way, then we suggest considering various options for this technique.

Classic highlighting

Probably every woman has once heard that such coloring is also popularly called “feathers”. At the end of the twentieth century, this type of highlighting was very common, when individual strands of feathers were deliberately highlighted. It did not look very natural, but quite stylish, thanks to which this hairstyle received the status of a classic. Most importantly, doing highlighting at home using this method is as easy as shelling pears. To do this, we will need several elastic bands (the more of them, the thinner your strands will be). We divide all the hair into several zones, preferably with partings (up to 8), and tie several ponytails in each of them. Now we dye these ponytails, leaving the part of the hair that is under the elastic band untouched. You need to wash off the supra (or paint) with shampoo. As a result, you will get feathers with the effect of regrown hair. The main thing is that it is easier to do this highlighting at home if you have short hair. With long curls you will suffer for a long time.

Simplified technique

You can also achieve the effect of highlighted feathers using a special cap. You can buy it in cosmetic stores and salons and use it many, many times. The cap has special slots through which you can pull out strands of hair that you want to lighten. Thanks to this device, highlighting your hair at home is much easier than using rubber bands, and most importantly, you can deal with long curls. However, you should remember that all your other hair is completely isolated. When using the previous technique, the ends of the ponytails may come into contact with the rest of the hair, lightening it a little. There will be no such effect right away, because the contrast between your hair and the bleached strands will be maximum.

Graduated technology

To work with hair using this method, we first need foil. During the dyeing process, individual strands of hair can be lightened several tones, or they can be completely whitened. In the first case, the result will be natural, gentle, and in the second you will get a bright image that will look stylish and bold. Now let's look at how you can carry out such highlighting at home. Reviews from women who tried to do it themselves tell us that it is extremely difficult. The fact is that you have to work with your whole head, and it’s not always possible to reach the back of the head. Therefore, it is advisable that you get help from members of your household who have at least a little understanding of beauty technology.

The process itself consists of dividing the hair into 12-16 “islands”. We start working from the back of the head, separating strands of hair in a checkerboard pattern and laying them on foil. We dye this hair and wrap it. It is noteworthy that each strand should be lightened from the root itself.

Traditions of sunny Italy

Surprisingly, it’s very easy to do the Venetian highlighting that’s fashionable this season with your own hands. It is easy to do at home because it does not require a cap, foil, or strong lightening agents, which can severely damage your hair if used incorrectly. Its essence is that as a result your hair should look as if it has been bleached by the sun, with smooth transitions from darker tones to lighter ones. There should be no radical bleaching: the strands that you dye are lightened by a maximum of two tones, and then with smooth transitions.

Also, a distinctive feature of this type of coloring is that we leave the roots in their natural color, and begin to apply the dye, retreating 3-5 centimeters from them. Well, we note that this coloring is only suitable for girls with dark hair. After all, the birthplace of Venetian highlighting is Italy, and almost all local residents are dark-haired.

Implementation technique

When we do highlighting at home using the Venetian method, all that is needed is paint of one tone. Having divided the entire hair into separate “islands”, we pull out strands from them in a chaotic manner and paint them, moving some distance away from the root. Then we simply lower this strand to the rest of the hair so that it touches it. This way, neighboring hairs will be slightly colored, making the transition from light curls to your natural dark hair smooth. The result is something like an ombre effect, where the ends of the hair are much lighter than the roots.

To achieve a more contrasting effect, experts recommend using cream paints that do not spread. Among them you can also find wax-based products. They only slightly affect neighboring strands, while maximizing the lightening of the worked ones. If your goal is more diffuse lightening with the smoothest possible transitions, then you can dye your hair with ordinary supra or dye that you buy in a salon or specialty store.

Painting in all natural colors

An analogue of the Venetian type of hair coloring is the so-called Californian highlighting. At home, it is a little more difficult to implement than the previous one, but it is still possible. In this case, we also dye the hair, stepping back slightly from the root to create the effect of naturally bleached strands. However, smooth transitions are achieved through the use of paints of different shades. This season, all warm colors are considered relevant - honey, caramel, nut, wheat, beige. You can use from two to five tones, coloring each individual strand. It is also noteworthy that according to the Californian method, you can both lighten individual strands of dark hair and darken some curls on light hair. Just choose a walnut, chestnut or coffee color and apply it to the selected curls. In this case, it is advisable to focus on the back of the head, leaving the crown and temples light.

We use improvised objects to achieve the desired effect

Highlighting with a comb at home is the easiest, and most importantly, the fastest. To do this, you will need a wide-toothed brush and the paint itself that you are going to use to lighten your hair. Apply the dye to the comb and run it through the hair, from top to bottom. It is important to grab the hair from the root and brush along it to the very tip. There is no need to wrap dyed curls in foil; you just need to leave your hair loose, without tying it in a ponytail. The end result will be that your locks are highlighted in even strands, and the color transitions will be smooth rather than harsh. This type of highlighting is ideal for long hair, which is difficult to divide into different parts and strands, and also to wrap in foil.

Conclusion

Hair highlighting is a relatively new type of hair coloring, but very common and universal. Due to the fact that only individual strands of your hair are lightened, the image does not change dramatically, but only transforms and becomes more fresh and stylish. Highlighting is ideal for women of any age, hair color and skin. It hides gray hair, masks sparse and thin hair, and makes any hairstyle more voluminous and multifaceted. The most important thing is that you can dye individual strands of hair at home, with your own hands, spending very little money.

The most fashionable types of hair highlights

Every woman has dreamed of changing her hair color at least once. Some experiment easily, while others find it difficult to decide to radically change their appearance. In this case, there is a wonderful solution - highlighting: a method of dyeing hair in individual strands. However, this method of painting has many other advantages.

Advantages and disadvantages

pros

Compared to traditional coloring, highlighting has a number of advantages:

Minuses

The procedure also has some “disadvantages”:

  • the procedure requires certain skills, so it is quite difficult to carry it out on your own;
  • coloring can take a long time - it depends on the type of highlighting, the number of colors used, etc.;
  • Like any chemicals, highlighting preparations are harmful to hair, especially if this procedure is carried out regularly. Therefore, it is imperative to take care of your curls - do masks, wraps and other restorative procedures;
  • You can’t highlight your hair after dyeing it with henna, or immediately after perm;
  • If there is a lot of gray hair and regular coloring is required, this may complicate the subsequent root touch-up procedure a little.

As you can see, highlighting has much more advantages than disadvantages, and even those are very relative, so it’s hardly worth giving up such a wonderful way to improve the appearance of your hair.

Interesting fact: The “father” of highlighting is considered to be the French stylist Jacques Dissange, whose first model for this procedure was the famous actress Brigitte Bardot. It was her faded bangs that Dissange tried to tidy up by coloring individual strands.

Highlighting methods

The coloring composition is applied to the hair in only four ways:

Types of highlighting

They differ in the technique of applying the dye, the color and length of the hair for which they can be used, and the number and size of strands that are dyed. Some of them are already considered traditional, but do not lose their relevance. Others have appeared recently and have already gained popularity. All of them can be divided into several main types.

Classic and zonal

Classic- This is a uniform coloring of hair strands along the entire length. In this case, the thickness and width of the strands may vary. The thinner they are, and the smaller the difference between the main color and the dyed curls, the more natural the hairstyle looks.

Zonal- This is the coloring of only individual strands of hair. In the classic version, the upper strands of dark brown or dark hair are lightened. But creative highlighting is becoming increasingly popular, as well as asymmetrical, diagonal, root, avant-garde and other types of partial coloring.

Traditional and reverse

With traditional highlighting, the hair is lightened, but with the reverse, on the contrary, individual strands are dyed a darker color. The latter method is practiced by fair-haired girls who want to make their hair color darker, or by bleached brunettes and brown-haired women who want to restore their natural color without a sharp transition.

Normal and gentle

If with regular highlighting the natural color can be changed by any number of tones, then gentle highlighting involves changing the natural color by a maximum of two or three tones. The paints used in this procedure do not contain ammonia and include additional moisturizing components. The most gentle way is to color a small number of thin strands of hair, mainly from the middle of the length or at the ends.

7 most popular types of highlighting

There are so many different types of this procedure that a whole book would probably not be enough to mention them all. Therefore, we will focus only on the most popular “highlights”.

"BROND"

Bronzing is multi-color dyeing within the natural color range. It allows you to create the most magnificent colors and shades. Multispectrality and play of color visually increase the volume of hair and make it radiant, shimmering and saturated with energy. This effect was immediately appreciated by many Hollywood stars, and it was thanks to them that the booking procedure quickly gained popularity throughout the world.

For bronzing dark hair, coffee-chocolate, copper-chestnut and dark brown shades are most often used. Blonde hair is bronzed with beige, amber, wheat, coffee, walnut and light chestnut shades.

Coloring of this type can be either classic, over the entire length, or zonal, for example, ombre.

Ombre

Ombre highlighting technology (other names - balayage, degrade) is the creation of a smooth transition from a darker shade at the roots to a lighter shade at the tips. In this case, the color gradation can be quite noticeable, for example, from black to white.

Usually this coloring is two-tone, but sometimes three colors are used. In this case, the clarity of each color individually and the blurriness of the transition between them are important.

Shatush

This type of procedure allows you to create an imitation of natural sunburn on dark hair. For blond hair it is used much less frequently, since the effect is not so noticeable. It is also used to disguise gray hair if its amount does not exceed 30%, and to smooth out the contrast of colored hair with regrown roots.

The procedure is attractive because it does not take much time (up to 1 hour), and you can also use natural dyes (henna and basma).

French (majimesh)

Highlighting performed with ammonia-free cream paint on a wax base. It is considered one of the most gentle types. Allows light curls to give golden, pearl and nut shades, but it is not suitable for dark hair, since no intense lightening occurs, only a slight color change. But it is precisely because of this that blonde hair acquires an amazing shine and looks much brighter and more voluminous.

For such coloring, either one shade or a combination of several different tones can be used.

Californian (Venetian)

This is a gentle type of hair highlighting, in basic terms similar to shatush, but distinguished by a variety of different color combinations. More saturated shades can be used, and the palette of colors used for this procedure is much wider. In addition, it can be used not only on dark hair, but also light brown or, for example, dark blond.

If amber or golden strands are created on dark hair, then such highlighting is called Venetian.

American

This type of coloring is suitable for brunettes and brown-haired women who want to add bright colors to their image. To shade hair, from two to five colors from red, brown or red are used. Although recently this “autumn” palette has been replenished with very bright shades. The most daring ones can do highlights in green or purple tones.

With this type of highlighting, the strands can have a wide variety of thickness and width. Transitions are possible both soft and sharp, contrasting. This is one of those types of highlighting where, in principle, any dark-haired woman can choose the ideal option.

Extravagant

Unlike all other types, such non-standard coloring gives not only beauty, shine and volume to the hair, but also a certain extravagance to the entire image of a woman who has decided to radically experiment with her hairstyle. These can be bright colors, an original method of color separation, or color solutions for atypical haircuts.

There is no clear stylistic demarcation between these types. In terms of color, it stands out as something that has been very fashionable lately. highlighting “Salt and pepper”, creating the effect of almost gray hair.

You need to have even more courage to do multi-colored highlights, coloring the strands, for example, in green, blue and pink tones. There may be one color, but it is quite bright and sharply different from the general tone of the hair. It is these coloring options that are offered by such style trends as creative, avant-garde, Crazy colors. At the same time, “crazy colors” can set off individual strands, or be applied chaotically, and even create certain patterns (for example, Colloring parrot - the colors of a parrot, or stencil patterns - waves, circles).

More calm in the color scheme of highlighting in style contrast and diagonal. In the first case, vertical lines of bright, contrasting tones are created (for the most daring - white plus black). Diagonal highlighting involves a specific separation of partings: vertically or at an angle. At the same time, in the classic version, the color scheme is not too saturated, but always contrasting. If this technique is used to create avant-garde or creative images, then the tones are chosen much brighter.

Which type of highlighting should you prefer?

When choosing a type, you should definitely consider:

  • hair condition;
  • main color;
  • hair is natural or already dyed;
  • hair length;
  • haircut type;
  • eye color;
  • color of the skin.

These are all very important points, and if you make the wrong choice or ignore any of them, you may be disappointed in the final result. It is unlikely that you will cope with this task on your own for the first time, and an experienced hairdresser will definitely tell you which option will suit you best.

Did you like it?...Put + 1.

Initially, hair highlighting was a procedure that could only be performed in a salon.

But with the advent of auxiliary means, fans of this painting method had the opportunity to diversify their home look. You just need to buy everything you need, prepare theoretically and then start practicing.

We’ll tell you how to properly highlight your own hair at home, how difficult it is to do it yourself, and also several ways to beautifully color your hair at home with video tutorials!

Is it possible to do it yourself, how difficult is it?

Highlighting is not as complicated an operation as you might think.

There are methods that are used at home, some can be easily applied without helpers ( combs or hair bands).

For some you need a second mirror to see the back of your head ( with a cap), and for some you will need an assistant ( with foil).

However, there is no need to be afraid; it is not without reason that it is said that the eyes are afraid, but the hands do.

Maybe the first time not everything will go smoothly, but each time the procedure will become easier, and the result will be more and more pleasing.

The main difficulties are that It’s hard to see the back of your head even with 2 mirrors, and when you have to pull strands through the holes in the cap, getting into the perforation from behind will be difficult at first until you develop a certain skill.

It’s hard to hold your arms up for a long time without the habit.

But these imaginary difficulties do not matter, because the result will bring both aesthetic and financial satisfaction, since doing highlighting at home is much cheaper than in a salon.

We will tell you how to do California highlighting, and you will also find training videos there.

What you need

At first you need to choose a highlighting technique and then purchase everything you need:

  • container for diluting paint;
  • bleaching composition (3-6% for light hair and 9-12% for dark hair), thick enough not to drip;
  • brush for applying the composition;
  • comb for dividing hair into strands;
  • gloves to protect hands;
  • a towel or a special cape to protect your shoulders.

In addition, depending on the highlighting method, you will need:

  • hat with holes;
  • special foil for highlighting or regular foil for everyday use;
  • non-metallic comb with wide teeth;
  • rubber bands.

Techniques and step-by-step instructions

Despite the variety of techniques available for use at home, they are united by a sequence of actions and the fact that they can be used without contacting a specialist.

Through the cap

The essence of the technique is to pull out thin strands over a special cap with holes placed on the head.

A hook is used for convenience, masters do this with the tip of a comb.

The pulled out strands are painted with a lightening compound. The thickness of the strands, their placement and quantity depends only on desire.

For a subtle effect, you can use every third hole, for the middle strand, they are pulled out through one hole; intense coloring will be obtained if all holes are used.

The easiest way to use a cap is on hair no longer than 15 cm.. This is the most convenient and therefore easiest way to highlight.

Special caps with holes are used through which the strands are pulled and dyed in one color.

But in the absence of a perforated cap, you can use a swimming cap with holes made, a shower cap, or a regular plastic bag.

When using a bag, you need to cut it along one of the sides, and the resulting corner is put on the head and tied at the back.

Holes in the bag can be made at the same time as pulling out the strands.

The procedure is carried out in the following sequence:

  • Comb your hair in the direction it grows and carefully put on a perforated cap.
  • Pull out the strands with a crochet hook: first at the temples, then at the crown and at the back of the head.
  • It is good to comb the pulled out strands with a fine-toothed comb, and check with a second mirror whether all the strands are pulled out at the temples and the back of the head, because outside the line of sight it is easy to miss the necessary holes.
  • Wear gloves, prepare a lightening mixture and apply it to the pulled out strands on top of the cap.
  • Wait for the time indicated in the annotation, monitoring the clarification process visually. It is possible that the desired color will be achieved before the recommended time has passed.
  • Rinse off the brightening composition without removing the cap.
  • Comb the strands, tilting your head down, and carefully pull off the cap, starting from the edges.
  • Wash your hair with the product recommended in the instructions for the lightening composition.

On foil

How to do highlighting on foil yourself? In this way you can do both single-color and multi-colored highlights.

But this method is inconvenient to use independently., it's better to ask someone to help.

This method is not suitable for short hair.

The sequence of the procedure is as follows:

    When using household foil, prepare strips about 10 cm wide and 2-3 cm longer than the strands.

    There will be no such problems with specialized foil, since it is already cut into strips 30 cm long. There are usually 50 or 100 pieces of such strips in a package.

  • Prepare the composition for highlighting.
  • Place a towel or hairdresser's cape over your shoulders.
  • Comb your hair, make a parting in the middle of your head and divide your hair into 7-8 strands: 3-4 in the center of the head and 2 on the sides. Each strand is secured with a clip.
  • It is better to start coloring from the back, moving from below to the crown or from the crown down. Then the side zones are processed and, lastly, the upper part of the head. The tip of the comb separates a thin strand, from which thin strands of the same width are pulled out using the darning method, under which a strip of foil is placed.
  • The dye is applied to the hair, and even if it needs to be highlighted from the very roots, an indent of 1 cm is made from the scalp so that there are no blurry spots at the roots.
  • The dyed strands are wrapped in a strip of foil, which is fixed by bending it from the sides to the center; sometimes, invisible pins or convenient clips are additionally used.
  • The composition is kept on the head depending on the desired shade. Usually for light hair it is 10-15 minutes, for dark hair the time increases to 45-50 minutes.
  • >Carefully remove the foil strips and rinse your hair to remove the dye. Use the shampoo recommended in the paint instructions.

Tips for coloring long, medium and short hair yourself

Short hair needs to be cut frequently after coloring.

Growing roots are more visible on them, even if the hair grows at the same speed, the regrown root of 1 cm will be, for example, 2 percent of the length for long hair.

And for a hairstyle 10 cm long, the regrown root will be 10 percent and therefore will stand out more.

Highlighting on short hair is best done through a cap., because separating short strands will be inconvenient.

For long ones only foil is suitable, because it will be impossible to remove the cap after dyeing and washing the strands.

Both methods are suitable for medium-length hair, but experts recommend that if the hair is not quite short, use only foil, because with this method it is easier to correct regrown roots.

Highlighting seems like a very complicated procedure, but if you get acquainted with the techniques of painting using various tools, it turns out that, in fact, there is nothing complicated about it.

There are special kits on sale that make it easier to carry out the procedure at home. All that remains is to familiarize yourself with the sequence of operations and get down to business.
