Maslenitsa 2018 in Moscow will be celebrated for seven days from February 12 to 18. This holiday is deservedly considered one of the most fun. Various events will be organized at forty venues in the city, where you can take part in competitions, round dances, festivities and try pancakes with hundreds of the most delicious, traditional or unusual fillings. In our article we will tell you where you can go on weekends in Moscow, where you can relax for free with children, where to eat pancakes and what interesting places you can visit in the city.

On February 9-18, 2018, over 40 sites will operate in different areas of Moscow, including Revolution Square, Manezhnaya Square, New Arbat, Tverskoy Boulevard and others.

Each will have its own theme and design. Over a hundred hand-made art objects will be used here. So, here you can see “Tsar Maslenitsa” made from several tons of pure lake ice, straw Maslenitsa figures, Russian national toys from one and a half to three meters in height and much more.

Muscovites and guests of the capital will enjoy theatrical folklore Maslenitsa performances, traditional folk fun and games; Guests will be entertained by buffoons and entertainers.

Culture and recreation parks will present an extensive animation program for children and adults with competitions, interactive events, and concerts of professional and amateur groups.

Festive events for Maslenitsa in Moscow Parks

Maslenitsa in Gorky Park

On February 17 and 18, a holiday called “Maslenitsa Sunshine” will be held here. A rubber art object in the form of a huge sun will be placed between the columns of the park’s entrance group.

Walking through the park, you can see thematic installations: Flames, Flowers, Tower and Labyrinth. In order to spend the winter properly, several sites are organized in the park.

Take part in tug-of-war, try a sack race or play relaxing games like scramble, chess and petanque. And then stop by the fair to warm up with hot pancakes and buy soulful souvenirs. The stage on which the artists will perform will be installed on Pushkinskaya Embankment.

There will also be a solemn ceremony of burning the effigy - instead of an ordinary straw doll, a creative art object will be burned. This year its height will reach eight meters, so the holiday will be visible from afar.

Museum-Reserve "Izmailovo"

On February 18, 13.00, everyone will be able to take part in interactive events in the “Under the Vaults” concert hall; free entrance tickets will be distributed right in the park. There will also be a performance by a Russian folk ensemble and a performance of life-size puppets with buffoons.

Important! The number of places is limited, so the organizers warn visitors that it is impossible to accommodate everyone in the building.

Hermitage Garden: Maslenitsa events

Guests can enjoy sports competitions and a wooden horse ride. For participation, everyone will receive a cockerel lollipop. You can take part in braiding for Maslenitsa.

Everyone will be able to dance in circles and ride the carousel. For the youngest visitors there will be a theatrical performance on the theme of the traditions of welcoming spring in Rus'. The Lyubo-Milo ensemble will organize traditional square Maslenitsa chants with games. The finale of the holiday will be the burning of the Maslenitsa effigy.

Festive program in Kuzminki Park

Guests are invited to creative master classes, where everyone will be taught how to create popular prints. Children will be shown a street performance based on the fairy tale “The Twelve Months”, and there will also be a concert by an orchestra of Russian folk instruments.

At the end of the holiday there is a Maslenitsa ribbon carousel.

Tagansky Park

People's quest. Visitors will be divided into teams and complete various sports and intellectual tasks. They will have to create a scarecrow of Maslenitsa and remember Russian folk songs and ditties associated with the holiday. The festivities will end with a concert of folklore ensembles.

Tverskaya Square

The stage on Tverskaya Square is dedicated to the Maslenitsa traditions of Moscow and the Moscow region. Folklore groups, musical groups and professional theater artists will perform here every day. The program on Tverskaya Square introduces Maslenitsa games, traditional round dances, and carols.

The “House of the Red Horse” pavilion will host master classes on painting wooden toys, lectures and an exhibition on traditional wood painting.

Visitors to the Living Room pavilion will attend master classes on gold embroidery, cold gilding and Khokhloma painting of wooden utensils.

The Pottery Workshop pavilion invites you to learn more about Moscow tiles. Guests will enjoy demonstration classes by ceramic masters.

For children, the site will feature a “Children’s Maslenitsa Village” - a playground with houses, mills, and wells.

The artists will introduce children to traditional Maslenitsa games for the Moscow region. Folklore groups, musical groups and theater artists will perform on the main stage of Tverskaya Square every day. The program will be complemented by Maslenitsa games, round dances and carols.

Here you can see mummers' performances, learn folk songs that were sung on Maslenitsa, wrestle with a bear and take part in other folk games and amusements.

Tverskoy Boulevard

On Tverskoy Boulevard, guests will be able to practice archery, take part in tug-of-war competitions, a comic duel with training tambar swords, or a sack fight on a log.

Here, in the “Kitchen” pavilion, a “Bread House” will open, where you can learn the history of flour-grinding and baking. The pavilion will host an exhibition of different types of grain and flour, tools and devices for grinding flour, preparing dough, baking bread and pancakes.

Revolution square

On Revolution Square, a guard from the early 19th century will keep order in the noble location and “arrest” festival guests, inviting them to take photographs. You can take a photo and immediately print it as a keepsake. The photo booth will be open all days of the festival from 11:00 to 22:00.

The space between Revolution Square and Manezhnaya Square will be turned into a large playground with brightly painted equipment for outdoor fun and competitions.

Guests can ride on the carousel, swings and spring rockers, and test their agility with the balance beam and ring throw rides. The site is open daily from 11 to 20:00.

Kamergersky Lane

A “City of Masters” will grow in Kamergersky Lane, where anyone can independently paint dishes, souvenirs and household items, make a carved frame, and also make a Maslenitsa-Lichomanka doll.

As part of the “Golden Mask in the City” project, seven national theaters from different Russian regions will present plays, dance performances and a fragment of an opera. The main event of the program will be the performance “The Red Shaman” based on the work of Platon Oyunsky, a joint project of the two largest theaters in Yakutia. The performance will take place on February 18.

New Arbat

Carnival processions await festival visitors on Novy Arbat! The “People's Izba” site will operate here, where folk crafts of the late 19th century will be demonstrated. Here the musical group “Komon” will perform traditional music on the accordion, balalaika and tambourine. Performances will take place on all festival days, every hour for 20 minutes.

3. Revolution square

And in the Pancake Chalet there will be culinary master classes for the children, where they will be shown how to prepare Maslenitsa cabbage soup, kutia, pies, sugar crumpets and gingerbread cookies. And of course, a variety of pancakes will be baked here: hearty ones - with meat, mushrooms and chicken; sweet - with forest berries, nuts and honey; and very original ones - bird cherry, with beets, with salmon and mascarpone and many others.
4. Tverskaya Square
A real fairy-tale forest will appear around the monument to Yuri Dolgoruky, where you will see an epic stone at a crossroads, an apple tree with rejuvenating apples, and even a casket containing Koshchei’s death. Of course, here you can also meet characters from your favorite fairy tales from childhood: Alyonushka, Vasilisa the Wise, Ivan Tsarevich, Marya Morevna, Finist the Clear Falcon and others. 5. Novopeschanaya street, Sokol

15. Yunosti Square, Zelenograd

At free master classes, you will be able to master the basics of painting on textiles and wood, create wooden kitchen utensils, etc., learn to play Russian folk instruments - such as gusli, kuvikly, zhaleika, balalaika, harmonica, horns and percussion. Dance flash mobs will also take place as part of this celebration.

According to the already established tradition, fair rows will be opened at many sites of the Moscow Maslenitsa 2019 festival, where you can purchase handicrafts and souvenirs from the Nizhny Novgorod, Ivanovo, Vladimir regions and Belarus.

And, of course, what is Maslenitsa without a delicious treat? From March 1 to March 10, 2019, gourmet products from different regions of the country will be sold at the festival sites. Here you will be able to try more than 100 types of pancakes, the preparation of which was entrusted to the best Moscow catering establishments, which submitted applications for participation and passed a strict selection process.

In addition, master classes on preparing Maslenitsa dishes will be organized at the festival. The teachers will be restaurant chefs, food bloggers and simply experienced chefs who will teach children and adults how to cook pancakes and pancakes - fluffy and thin, with kefir and sour cream, with buckwheat and rye flour, with sweet and satisfying fillings.

The culmination of the holiday will be on the weekend, when they say goodbye to winter and burn a scarecrow. Maslenitsa week will end with Forgiveness Sunday, when people ask each other for forgiveness and part with grievances inflicted in the past.

Oyunsky - performance "Red Shaman", staged based on the work of Platon Oyunsky. In some parks: Lianozovsky, Goncharovsky, Babushkinsky, Perovsky, 50th Anniversary of October Park, Hermitage Garden, Fili, Krasnaya Presnya parks and the Vorontsovo estate, the holiday will end with the burning of an effigy of Maslenitsa.

In Gorky Park on Maslenitsa there will be a real “Sunshine” - this is the name of the holiday that will take place here on February 17 and 18. A large fair will take place in the park, where you can buy decorative items, farm products and taste fragrant pancakes. The central platform for street festivities will be Pushkinskaya Embankment.

There will be a stage on which musicians will perform, and a tower from which the hosts will control the celebration. Guests can warm up after long walks by visiting the play area. There they will find entertainment for every taste. Visitors will be able to demonstrate their strength in a tug of war, and on the trail of distorting mirrors they will be able to take unusual selfies. It will not be possible without the main ritual - the burning of an effigy of Maslenitsa.


In the Hermitage Garden, guests will also enjoy sports competitions - tug of war and wooden horse racing. It will also be possible to take part in the Russian folk pastime - braiding for Maslenitsa. This is a competition between two teams in weaving braids from multi-colored ribbons at speed. Everyone will be able to dance in circles and ride on the carousel, which will be installed in the garden by February 18. The celebrations will take place from 13:00 to 19:00.

At the Tsaritsyno Museum-Reserve, visitors will be entertained by buffoon animators and characters from popular fairy tales and cartoons. Guests will be invited to try pancakes with different fillings, as well as take part in a competition for the best performance of Russian folk dances - the lady and the apple. Festive events will last from 12:00 to 16:00.

Maslenitsa in Tagansky Park will be held in the form of a fun folk quest. All visitors will be divided into teams and will perform various sports and intellectual tasks. Each team will have to create their own effigy of Maslenitsa and remember Russian folk songs, ditties, and jokes associated with the holiday. The festivities will run from 13:00 to 19:00 and will end with a concert performed by folklore ensembles.


Guests of Fili Park are invited to a quest of seven comic stages, compiled according to the days of Maslenitsa week. It starts at 13:10, the teams are assembled by buffoon animators. The tasks include comic Maslenitsa riddles, tug of war, intricate round dances, and pancake competitions. Participation in the quest is free. Guests of the park are also invited to take part in a pancake show: from 13:00 to 18:00 they will be cooking at a master class, followed by a free distribution of pancakes and a free tea party. The festivities will begin at 13:00 and end at 19:00 with a festive disco.

In Victory Park on Poklonnaya Hill, during the holiday from 13:00 to 19:00, an original Maslenitsa photo zone will be set up on the main square, designed like an upper room in a traditional Russian hut. There will be a Russian stove, wooden benches, shelves and folk costumes - you can try them on and take pictures. Cooking enthusiasts will be able to take part in a free master class on baking pancakes according to old Russian recipes.

Guests of Kuzminki Park are invited to attend creative master classes on February 18, where everyone will be taught how to create popular prints. From 13:00 to 19:00, visitors will be shown a street performance based on the fairy tale “The Twelve Months”, and there will also be a concert by an orchestra of Russian folk instruments. At the culmination of the holiday, its participants will call on spring with the help of a Maslenitsa ribbon carousel.


A festival of colorful pancakes will take place on Maslenitsa in Krasnaya Presnya Park. Guests will not only be able to try pancakes, but also learn the secrets of their preparation from different chefs. Unusual recipes will also be shared with visitors to Goncharovsky Park. They will also teach you how to bake and paint gingerbread cookies.

Maslenitsa is an ancient Slavic holiday that has survived to this day since pagan times. It is dedicated to the end of winter and the arrival of warm days. Initially, Maslenitsa was associated with the spring solstice, but after the adoption of Christianity it began to be celebrated on the eve of Lent. The main dish - pancakes - symbolizes the spring sun. The culmination of the cheerful holiday of seeing off winter is the burning of an effigy of Maslenitsa.

This year Maslenitsa will be celebrated not only in the capital’s parks, but also in the city center. The Moscow Maslenitsa festival will take place from February 9 to 18. It will be held in Moscow for the second time. There you will not only be able to enjoy pancakes, but also find out how farewell to winter was celebrated at different times, as well as what Maslenitsa traditions have been preserved in different regions of Russia.
