On June 1, Children's Day, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Belarus and UNICEF organized a joint event “Partnership for Children”.

Among the participants were the Minister of Labor and Social Protection Irina Kostevich, the Minister of Economy Vladimir Zinovsky, the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Nikolai Melchenko, the Deputy Minister of Emergency Situations Gennady Lasuta, the leadership of a number of parliamentary commissions, and representatives of local authorities. Also present were the heads of representative offices of UN organizations accredited in Belarus, diplomatic institutions, heads of charitable foundations, public organizations, the media and their families.

The main guests of the holiday were children: students of Belarusian schools, orphanages, including those sponsored by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Perezhirsky secondary school named after A.E. Gurinovich and the social and pedagogical center of the Moskovsky district of Minsk, as well as children with special needs of psychophysical development. The organizers have prepared many competitions and entertainment for them.

Belarus and UNICEF have been creating a safe environment for children in the country for decades.

“I am grateful to the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) office for the work it is doing in Belarus. For decades, we have been creating a safe environment for children together: socially, economically, environmentally and legally,” said Vladimir Makei. The minister recalled how he once threatened his little son with punishment, but he quickly responded and replied that this was prohibited by the Convention on the Rights of the Child. “This suggests that we simply have to teach children these documents,” he is convinced.

Rashed Mustafa Sarwar, UNICEF Representative, also emphasized in his speech the importance of partnerships for children. “I sincerely believe that only together we can build a better world for every child. Let’s join our efforts to ensure that all the wishes written and spoken to every child on Children’s Day come true!” he urged.

This year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs also joined the information campaign launched by the UNICEF office in Belarus on Children's Day.

Throughout the day, the leadership and employees of the ministry and Belarusian diplomatic missions abroad, as well as everyone else who wanted to take part in the action, sent wishes to children from all over the world on their social media accounts.

On Children's Day, famous athletes and a musician supported the non-profit organization "Threads of Friendship", which is developing a mentoring program. Vitaly Gurkov, Alexandra Gerasimenya and Alexander Patlis spoke about mentoring.

Andrey became a mentor for Eduard two years ago. Edik has no one: his mother is from an orphanage and abandoned the boy in the maternity hospital. Being close to Andrey is an opportunity to be in a family for the first time in my life. There are many people like Edik who are waiting for their adult. Even though these children may not have a new mom and dad, they may have a caring adult in their lives. He will come and say: “You didn’t come into this world in vain, and I don’t care what future awaits you.”

What do mentors do? They live an ordinary life, do what they love, what they are good at. There may just be another person nearby at this time.

“Threads of Friendship” is developing a mentoring program. The task is to find adults and prepare them to communicate with orphans. This is not an easy job: the Threads of Friendship psychologist spends three months preparing one mentor. Only after preparation does the first acquaintance with the child occur. First - together with the coordinator, and only then - one on one.

Three years of Threads of Friendship talks about mentoring. During this time, 24 children from orphanages met their adult, who was not indifferent to their fate. In Minsk alone, 1,000 teenagers who will never be adopted are waiting for mentors.

The non-profit organization “Threads of Friendship”, which will look for mentors for children from orphanages, was created by Minsk resident Artem Golovy. Artem knows from his own experience what it means to grow up without parents. He also knows how much orphans need their own adult, who will care about their life.

During the work of the organization: 808 people came to the information meeting, 299 people filled out a questionnaire, 263 people were selected after a questionnaire, 258 people had their first consultation with a psychologist, 165 people completed educational training, 71 mentoring agreements, 24 “Mentor - Pupil” pairs were formed.

Artem Golovy, director of the Threads of Friendship organization, spoke about the problems of implementing the program:

- We know how to develop a mentoring program: from finding people willing to help children to accompanying mentor-child pairs. The program works only in Minsk; we know that our help is also needed in the regions. But in Minsk we are not working at full capacity. Why? There are several reasons.

We lack support from the state: the concept of mentoring is not enshrined in any law. It is difficult for us to tell what we do and why. They don't hear us. We want to be useful and want to develop a mentoring program together with the state, and help children together.

The second reason is predictable. We do not have permanent funding; all our employees are volunteers. In order to form pairs, we need the constant work of psychologists and teachers who train and accompany future mentors. Over three years, the psychologist provided consultations to 258 people. Today we have 24 couples who need to be accompanied. And 1000 teenagers who need a mentor! After all, having become a mentor, a person is faced with many questions that he could not think about before. We believe that we will be heard.
