Interview with Ruslan Tatyanin:

Tell us how your career began?

My career began around the age of 19. I wanted to be a makeup artist, or rather a make-up artist; there was no such profession as a makeup artist then. At that time, domestic show business began to emerge, music videos and programs about fashion appeared, and I learned that there was such a profession as a stylist.

Where did you study?

I found the very first makeup artist courses in Moscow. And then they told me: “Ruslan, you can do makeup and work with hair well!” I liked this idea and I entered the Third Moscow Industrial Pedagogical College in the department of “Hairdressing and Decorative Cosmetics” and received a diploma, which I am proud of.

How did your career begin?

After graduating from college, I went to work in a salon, where I worked for five years - it was the first salon-studio of Alexander Todchuk. It was very interesting to work, I was his assistant in such magazines as Harpers Bazaar, Vogue and many others, which had just appeared in Russia at that time. I worked at Fashion Weeks, on filming, without leaving work in the salon - I really appreciate the practice with ordinary clients for their vivid emotions.

How did your career develop further?

And then two interesting offers arrived: to become a stylist for the Schwarzkopf company in Russia and to work with the “Theatrical Partnership 814 of Oleg Menshikov,” which then became famous in Moscow for its play “Woe from Wit”! In the Partnership, at first I was an assistant to the leading stylist of this performance, Lev Novikov, who at the very beginning worked with Laima Vaikule, Larisa Dolina, Valery Leontyev and did all the first fashion shoots in our country. And when Oleg Menshikov wanted to stage the play “Kitchen,” I was already invited as a full-fledged makeup artist, so that I would develop not only hairstyles for this performance, but also makeup.

How did you manage to combine everything?

I had to give up working at Todchuk’s salon because I simply didn’t have time to work with such a schedule. And I found a small closed salon in Moscow that was ready to adjust its schedule to suit me.

Tell us about your work at Schwarzkopf ?

Started working at Schwarzkopf and made several interesting collections. My first collection for Schwarzkopf is “Kokoshniki”. I did evening hairstyles and at the end of my show all the models were wearing kokoshniks, but not in the Russian folk style - these were beautiful evening accessories that, thanks to Diaghilev’s musical seasons and Russian aristocrats, were fashionable in Paris at the beginning of the twentieth century. And I had denim, leopard and military kokoshniks. Then I did a big master class called “Creating hairstyles and looks in the style of 20th century Hollywood.” This collection was born in 2006, and I demonstrated this master class at the World Hairdressing Championship. At the Schwarzkopf company, I was given complete creative freedom, and it was then that my own style was born - the style of an elegant and mysterious woman, in which there is no vulgarity and vulgarity, so replicated by modern media. When I became an independent stylist, in 2008 I made the “Woman in Red” collection, meaning “beautiful” by the word “red”. In this collection, I told the story of the color red and celebrated beauty, femininity and elegance.

Do you have your own school?

Mostly I travel around the country. I have several programs, I conduct large and private master classes on hairstyles and image creation. We actively cooperate with Kazakhstan, the Baltic states, Ukraine, and Israel. And in Moscow I recruit groups and teach.

You are called the “maestro of long hair”, does this mean that you only work with long hair?

Since I continue to be a practicing master working in a salon, I cut and color, like all the masters who stand behind the chair. The only thing I miss in the salon is the creativity of creating hairstyles, which are mostly done on special days - weddings, graduations, celebrations. After all, when creating a hairstyle, I come up with a costume, accessories, and image. My last collection of 2010 was called “Stylist in the Big City”, in which each hairstyle has a separate image and theme. In the collection, we decided to show all those festive and important moments in a woman’s life - “Prom”, “Wedding”, “A woman’s evening outing”, and “Beauty at an elegant age” - a certain pinnacle of hairdressing art. I was inspired on this topic by the actress, legend of Soviet cinema, the first sex symbol of our country, Svetlana Svetlichnaya. I called her the muse of this entire collection, where she acted as my model, and I will finally realize those images that I have dreamed of for so long.

What other stars have you worked with?

I did a photo shoot with a talented actress and amazing woman Tatyana Vasilyeva, a very bright and interesting woman. In 2010, I met actress Elena Ksenofontova, known from the television projects “The Red Chapel” and “Mothers and Daughters”. But I saw her in a theatrical production and realized how interesting and deep an actress she is, in the traditions for which we love the old theater and film school. We have a rather interesting project.

What are your plans for the near future?

First of all, these are new collections, one of which is “Wedding Maestro”, which will include hairstyles for the celebration, not only hairstyles for the bride, but also for bridesmaids, mothers, as well as hairstyles for the second day after the wedding. Usually, the hairstyle of the second day is what is left of the hairstyle of the first (laughs), but you can make the second day very festive for yourself! In December 2010, I also published a book “The best hairstyles for all occasions from Ruslan Tatyanin.” This is a large glossy album of 250 pages, which includes 50 master classes on step-by-step hairstyles. The book will be of interest not only to professionals, but also to ordinary people. It is the result of my 15 years of work, it is such a storehouse of practical information that has been collected over many years and had to spill out somewhere, because at seminars I cannot show everything, and the book can even be used as a textbook. Now we are talking with the publisher about the second book, also generously illustrated with good photography.

What helps you navigate current trends?

I am always learning and constantly improving my professional level, it is a magical profession! You can’t say, “I can do everything and I don’t need anything new,” this can only mean that interest has disappeared and it’s worth reconsidering your attitude towards the profession. Lack of striving for something new means that your talent and gift either leaves you or may leave. Therefore, I always attend many seminars, both abroad in the UK, France, Italy, and in Moscow.

Which world-famous masters do you respect?

From every master whom we can always focus on, I learn something - from each one. And I’ll share a little secret of my success: when I first went to Todchuk’s salon, I learned to work very calmly from him. He never fusses, does not shout, does not raise his voice, be it working with a client or backstage at a show. When I first saw Patrick Cameroon, I liked the ease with which this master does his hair. I really liked it and in my work I try to show that everything is simple and accessible, even if the hairstyles are complex. So that a person is inspired and wants to try. I was also influenced by meeting and studying with fashion historian Alexander Vasiliev, he deepened my knowledge in the field of fashion, fashion history, style. Now it is impossible to consider yourself a high-class specialist without this knowledge.

Do you use any special tools to create evening hairstyles?

Share the little secrets of your craft. I use a comb called “Ruslan Tatyanin” - this is my signature brush, the only one I use to do absolutely all my hair. All the craftsmen loved it, many clients bought them for themselves. And I also use hair rollers very often, because the theme of the 60s, babettes in the style of Brigitte Bardot, is popular now. I can’t do a single show or master class without them! What would you wish for the masters? I wish the masters good luck, inexhaustible inspiration, new creative ideas! Until new interesting meetings!

    Interviewed by: Julia Butt

    > All articles > New publications > Ruslan Tatyanin

    We can discuss for a long time the stages of his dizzying career, listing the television and theater projects in which he participated and organized himself. You can believe or not believe the rumors. I want to say as an eyewitness: at festivals and exhibitions his stand is always full of people.

    Did you come to the stylist profession yourself - or did it find you?

    I came on my own, and already at a conscious age. At about 19 years old I took my first make-up course, thinking that being a stylist and make-up artist was probably not as difficult as being a hairdresser who could cut off a strand of hair and you couldn’t stick it back. Therefore, I planned to become a make-up artist, but when I graduated from school, I found out that there was such a profession - “stylist”, and took the first courses, and six months later I entered the Moscow Industrial Pedagogical College (now it is called the Art Pedagogical College of Technology and Design) to the Department of Hairdressing and Decorative Cosmetics. When I finished my studies, I was already about 22 years old, and I knew for sure that this was my life’s work.

    Which foreign hairdressing schools do you like?

    I enjoy attending other people's seminars, where there is always the opportunity to discover something new. Every year I definitely go to London for SALON INTERNATIONAL. For me, this is the most vibrant European exhibition in the field of hairdressing.
    I don’t miss the master classes of Vidal Sassoon, Toni&Guy. I can’t say that I really like everything, but I’m looking for new ideas, new trends, new concepts there. I look at how performances and shows are structured. I like what Patrick Cameron is doing, some new Italian and American schools. But this is interest, nothing more.

    You travel a lot around the country: could you assess the level of training of specialists in the province?

    At my master classes I teach evening hairstyles with long hair, and, in my opinion, this is the pinnacle of hairdressing! This is not mass love. Almost all hairdressers cut hair, all hairdressers do color, but not everyone does evening hairstyles. Those hairdressers who come to my master classes in the provinces are not coming to learn the craft of hairdressing at all. As a rule, they come with a fairly good level of preparation and want some knowledge from me.
    They are all already familiar with my work, they have seen my show programs and master classes on DVD. Those people who come to my seminar want to see a style of work that is very close to them, they follow the trends. I meet very talented masters, and it doesn’t matter whether it’s Yekaterinburg or Samara, St. Petersburg, Moscow, Khabarovsk...

    Do you think a hairdressing school could appear in Russia that would be on par with many famous world schools?

    Certainly! In our country we have amazing craftsmen and amazing collections that will undoubtedly give Westerners a run for their money. It is no coincidence that many world championships in hairdressing are won by Russian hairdressers. Hairdressing life in Russia is quite active, this can be confirmed by the number of exhibitions that are taking place in our country today. A striking example is the Nevskie Berega Beauty Festival, which I have been attending for four years now.

    You have a website, you have a Facebook page; How do you feel about Internet technologies?

    Like many creative people, I am weak in technology. But thanks to the people who are nearby, I lead my life in the web space. This is how they support all my activities: they make me websites, create Internet projects, post videos from master classes, and post information. Of course, I read all the letters that come to me, and I constantly monitor what is written about me on the Internet. But it’s difficult to cope with such a huge flow of information on your own, so I have assistants.
    I’m currently creating a new website, and soon, in addition to the website www.ruslantatyanin.ru, a new resource will be launched, which will be dedicated exclusively to weddings. There will be sections “Fashion”, “Makeup” and “Hairstyles”.
    I plan to post step-by-step master classes on wedding hairstyles on it. The concept of the site will be such that it will be of interest not only to masters, but also to ordinary girls who are going to get married.

    Many people dream of falling into your hands, and which famous woman would you like to work with, perhaps changing her image beyond recognition?

    I really wanted to work with some legendary woman that everyone knows, and create such an image that everyone would look and say: “Wow, is that really her?”
    This is how I met actress Svetlana Svetlichnaya. She is undoubtedly both a legend and a star, and we all remember her, but in the last 10 years Svetlana Svetlichnaya has disappeared, stopped filming and appearing in public. Life has changed, fashion has changed, it has changed, cinema has changed. And that fatal blonde that we fell in love with in the 60s and 70s seemed to have ceased to exist. This year she had an anniversary; the actress celebrated her 70th birthday. We did several photo sessions for this event. I completely changed the image of Svetlana Svetlichnaya, although she remained the same recognizable, chic, luxurious blonde as always, not of the Soviet type, but a magnificent, expensive woman of the Hollywood type. She has always been like this. My task was not to reshape the person, but to reveal something new in him, to add some colors so that she would shine while remaining herself. I can’t even remember any analogues where, with the help of a stylist, some famous actress shone with renewed vigor and new colors.
    I was also recently lucky enough to work with Tatyana Vasilyeva. She is an amazing woman. I did her makeup. I even managed to redo her hair, especially since she has short hair. We used various hairpieces and wigs. She completely believed in me and even said: “Ruslan, do what you want, you are such a master, I won’t even tell you anything.”
    My last project was working with the young generation actress Elena Ksenofontova. When I saw her in the theater, I wanted to make her into some kind of red-haired beast. Elena completely trusted me, and we did a photo shoot. I selected everything: makeup, hairstyle, accessories, clothes. As it turned out later, the actress was very worried and subsequently wrote to me on a postcard: “Will I be able to match, after all, you came up with something for yourself, but I’m not like that...”
    After Svetlana Svetlichnaya’s transformation, many famous actresses called me and asked: “Make me like Svetlana Svetlichnaya.” And I understand that there cannot be a second Svetlana Svetlichnaya. Now I have the luxury of working with whomever I would like, and refuse if the person is not interesting to me as a person or if I don’t like the style in which he sees himself.

    What style and female image are close to you?

    You know, among people in my profession it is now very fashionable to create the style of a femme fatale, a vamp, or to exploit a slight element of sloppiness, like that of a public whore. Everything is for show, a kind of woman who is the answer, in whom you can immediately see what and how much - this is not close to me. I think a woman should have a completely different image. No one is interested in a woman who is the answer, because everything is readable from the very first second. I'm interested in creating a mystery woman, so that when you see her you might think: I wonder how old she is? But the stylist did her hair - or is she naturally that red? Does she have her own eye color or not? Has she lost weight or not? Is it her or isn't she? It's a shame when young stars think that the fastest and easiest path to fame is to become a female lead; I don't accept this. I like women with a capital W, with a strong feminine principle. Unfortunately, my generation has only the last drops, diamonds, pearls. These are actresses from the generation of our mothers and grandmothers.

    Which of your projects is your favorite: “Kokoshniki”, “Hollywood” or “The Woman in Red”?

    You know, it's hard to say. “Kokoshniki”, for example, is my first project. I always wanted to express some complete thought or concept. When folklore motifs were in fashion, the show “Kokoshniki” appeared. This was 2002-2003.
    I’m a Russian person and I live in Russia! At that moment, this was exactly what inspired me! Then I became interested in the world history of fashion and read a huge amount of literature. In 2006, when the World Hairdressing Championships were held in Moscow, I presented the “Hollywood” collection and showed the change in fashion and style throughout the twentieth century. At that moment it was incredibly interesting to me. I can talk endlessly about my projects. It’s impossible to choose your favorite!

    In the theater you worked as a makeup artist for Oleg Menshikov. Typically, directors dictate their vision; Have you had any professional disputes?

    Oleg Menshikov is a very subtle intellectual and such an interesting and bright person that I followed any of his directorial visions with pleasure. I was glad to implement all his ideas and findings. He also had great confidence in my work. In terms of professionalism, the play “The Players” was very interesting to me; there were only men there, and for me, accustomed to female images, it seemed very exciting. With Oleg Menshikov we carried out amazing experiments: for example, in the first performances of “The Players” I gave him such a curly and funny, unusual image.

    What project are you working on now?

    By the New Year, the book “The Best 50 Hairstyles from Ruslan Tatyanin for All Occasions” will be published. These are 50 master classes, 50 techniques and 50 detailed step-by-step descriptions. It will have three huge sections: “Prom”, “Wedding hairstyles”, “Evening hairstyles”. Women of any style, of any age, even the most capricious, will definitely find a hairstyle for themselves in this book. Here I love and joyfully share the secrets of my craft with all hairdressers.

    What advice could you give to professionals working in salons?

    No matter how trivial it may be - to love your business, your job! We have such a profession that we can stand behind a chair for 10 hours, and if you do it with love, then everything will work out for you!

    Anyone who is seriously interested in cinema, theater and fashion magazines is probably well aware of this name - Ruslan Tatyanin. The hairstyles shown in this video tutorial are a convincing argument of his talent and the original style of the maestro of long hair. He worked with many stars, collaborated with many glossies, and wrote a number of thematic books about women’s hairstyles and their beauty.

    Video lesson “Ruslan Tatyanin - hairstyles”

    Preparing hair for hairstyle

    Comb your hair and leave the first tier. Then we lay the second one. We apply the third strand and, like the previous one, sew it to the base of the comb. Tie the thread and cut it off. Thus, three strands were sewn in a tier on top of each other.

    Doing your hair

    This hairstyle is very light and free, so if you want to leave some strands not collected in the hairstyle, you can immediately highlight them.

    We begin to work with the part that remains on the parietal zone as follows:

    • we work with our hands, no comb is needed here, select a small strand;
    • divide it into three parts;
    • we braid the most ordinary braid, each time adding one strand on all sides;
    • We clamp the edge of the pigtail with a clip;
    • we weave the curls freely, airily, without tightening the curls, they rise several centimeters above the head;
    • again we take three strands from one side at the level of the forehead and weave the braid in the same way as before on the parietal part;
    • repeat all actions on the opposite side of the head;
    • we weave the same “spikelet” from the temple, but not to the end of the strand, and stop approximately in the middle of it and clamp it with a clamp;
    • treat the braids with varnish;
    • We begin to unravel the very first top braid, i.e. slightly pulling out individual strands from the “spikelet”, making small curls;
    • at this moment we need to determine what kind of pomp and height we want to get;
    • apply the same technique to the rest of the braids;
    • we straighten the entire surface of the hairstyle as planned;
    • We work through all the hair, starting from the lowest strands, again with our hands: lift some of it up, beat the rest to form a cascading mane of hair;
    • varnish;
    • We repeat all the last steps with each strand;
    • We secure the resulting mass of hair with hairpins, trying to obtain a beautiful and correct hair shape;
    • We fix everything again with varnish.

    Hairstyle "Hollywood":

    • determine the location of the parting;
    • twist strands of hair from the side and at the back of the head;
    • We secure part of the hair with bobby pins along the line from the ear, slightly up to the parietal area, i.e. a little asymmetrical;
    • we take a small strand of hair behind the ear, twist and separate small strands, we get a spiral, which we treat with varnish, fold in half and secure with a bobby pin;
    • we repeat everything, the same with other strands and further, in several tiers: imagination itself will suggest further actions;
    • the line of bundles rises slightly upward;
    • The feeling of fragility of the hairstyle is deceptive; it holds up well.

    Laying out the parietal zone:

    • bangs are loose;
    • we treat it with varnish;
    • we make a sag above the right temple and lift the edge up;
    • lay the bangs a little to one side;
    • We make a tourniquet from the last strand of hair and mask the fastening of the bangs with it;
    • fix with invisible thread at the top;
    • The final touch: finalizing the overall shape of the hairstyle.

    Hairstyle techniques can be used in salons, and for shows, and master classes. The theme of hair styling is inspired by actresses of the 20s and 30s of the last century. Practiced on medium-length hair, ideal for cascading haircuts.

    Notice how beautiful and uniquely attractive it turns out. Believe me, any girl who wants to perfect her irresistibility can do this.
