It is known that tulle is an airy, beautiful material, so weightless that it resembles a cloud. It produces lush, voluminous products. Learning how to make a skirt from tulle will be useful for those who are going to a party, a children's party, or just want to add something unusual to their wardrobe. An image with such a detail is suitable for almost every holiday: New Year, birthday, bachelorette party. You can make such a skirt instead of a wedding dress, even use a train.

Step-by-step instructions with patterns for sewing tulle skirts

Sewing a tulle circle skirt is very simple. If you know how to sew such a product, then follow the same technology, but make it multi-layered to give it fullness. If you have never sewn similar products, a do-it-yourself fluffy tulle skirt may be your first product. There are many master classes with photos that will help you find a wonderful, fashionable and original piece of clothing, for example.

How to make a fluffy tutu skirt for a girl

A tulle skirt for a girl is made using the following materials:

  • tulle;
  • elastic band (width 2-2.5 cm);
  • satin ribbon (width 5 cm);
  • scissors;
  • pins;
  • tape measure;
  • a simple pencil or chalk.

Step-by-step instructions on how to make a children's skirt from tulle:

  1. Take the fabric and fold it to form 10 to 15 layers. You need to cut the tulle into 60-70 strips, the size of which is 20x50 cm.
  2. Take enough elastic so that its length corresponds to the waist size of the child for whom you are making the skirt, shorten it by 4 cm. Tie the elastic or fasten it with a thread and a needle to form a circle. Then place it on the back or legs of the chair to make it comfortable to work with.
  3. Take one strip of fabric, fold it in half and tie it with an elastic band, making 2 knots. There is no need to tighten it tightly (the elastic band should not be overtightened). Next to the first, tie the second strip in the same way, continue to do so and so on.
  4. When the product is ready, decorate it with a satin belt by folding the ribbon in half lengthwise and threading it through all the knots. You can tie the satin in a bow at the back, side or front.
  5. To make the edge of the garment even, fold the tulle strips into a ponytail and trim off the protruding ends with scissors.

For sewing you need:

  • rubber;
  • atlas;
  • tulle.

Instructions on how to sew a full skirt from tulle:

  1. Calculate the length of the frills: measure the expected length of the skirt, starting from the waist, then divide the result by 3 to get the desired value. You can make the upper satin tier a little narrower.
  2. Cut out the top frill; it should be double, equal in length to 2 waist circumferences. Then, cut 4 rectangles for the middle part of the product (length - 9 waist circumferences) and 8 layers of the bottom part (length - 13 waist circumferences). For trim, cut out 26 layers of ruffles, 26 waist circumferences long.
  3. The upper satin part needs to be folded in half, ironed, and fastened with thread along the short side so that there is room left for threading the elastic.
  4. Sew the parts for the middle part along the short sides and pull along the top part. Fold the finished ruffles one on top of the other and baste to the bottom of the satin top. Do the same with the lower parts of the skirt.
  5. The ruffles need to be folded in threes and stitched to the bottom of the product on the front and back sides.
  6. Thread the elastic around the waist. Sew up the open area by hand.

Pettiskirts-style layered skirt with tails

To make a skirt in this style, you will need:

  • non-woven fabric – 0.5 m;
  • tulle – 8 m (width 1.5 m);
  • satin – 50 cm;
  • elastic band (width 25 cm);
  • satin ribbon (for the belt).

Materials:

  1. Cut one part of light fabric (5 m) into strips 7-10 cm wide. The remaining part into tiers of 11 cm each. Process the sections of the tiers with a zigzag on a sewing machine.
  2. Sew 11 cm strips together along the narrow edge and stitch to form a circle.
  3. Gather the fabric, cut into 7-10 cm, using a machine stitch basting. Sew the resulting material to the skirt tiers formed earlier.
  4. A part of the satin needs to be cut out and joined with a seam on the side; from the inside, reinforce it with non-woven fabric.
  5. Sew on the belt and satin ribbon, and then attach the tulle skirt to the satin yoke. The product is ready.
    • tulle;
    • satin (for the base);
    • silk ribbon;
    • interlining;
    • scissors;
    • threads, needles.

DIY tulle skirt - step-by-step instructions:

  1. Cut the tulle into strips 15 cm wide. Take the same fabric of a softer texture, cut strips 10 cm wide. Finish the fabric sections using a serger. Connect the ribbons together, stitch in the middle and pull them together - you get ruffles.
  2. Cut a rectangular yoke from satin; for greater density, you can duplicate it with non-woven fabric. This workpiece should be slightly larger than the volume of the hips. To form a yoke, you need to sew the side parts, tuck the top so that you get a drawstring.
  3. Hang the belt in the drawstring. It can be in tone or another, contrasting shade, with its help the width of the item of clothing will be adjusted.
  4. Sew the rectangles cut from the first type of tulle together and gather them along the top. Sew the previously made ruffles to their bottom. Sew the parts of the skirt to the yoke so that the upper parts cover the lower parts by about half. The length of the finished skirt is adjustable by the number of tiers, that is, you can achieve any desired length.

Decorations for tulle clothing can be very different. You need to cover the ugly elastic band with a satin ribbon. You can simply sew it with a stripe or tie a beautiful bow, for example, on the side. Shiny details: sequins, beads or rhinestones will add beauty and charm to the product. Small beads sewn across the entire surface of the skirt will create the effect of snowflakes or stars. Using sequins you can sew on entire designs. Don’t be afraid to experiment, because in the end you will get an absolutely exclusive item that no one else has.

What to wear with

A tulle skirt is a universal thing; it can be worn with almost anything. The main requirement is that there should be only one voluminous item in the image. In this case, you should choose a more fitted top, since the skirt is full. The ideal companion for such a voluminous bottom would be a tight top. If you prefer loose-fitting blouses, tuck it into a skirt and place a belt or belt around your waist. In the off-season, such a bottom will look harmonious with a turtleneck or jumper, preferably plain ones.

An ensemble of a light-colored tutu skirt and a cropped cardigan or blouse looks interesting. You can get an equally chic look by combining a ballet bottom with a wool jumper. Remember that if you choose different textures, the colors should be the same. A tulle piece of clothing can also become part of a business ensemble, the main thing is that it is not too lush. Suitable outerwear items: leather jacket and coat. Never combine an openwork bottom with the same top (for example, a tutu skirt with a lace blouse).

Tulle is a light, weightless mesh fabric. Garments made from this material add airiness and grace to the look.

In addition, tulle has excellent air permeability and is pleasant to the touch, which makes it a practical material. Anyone who has basic sewing and cutting skills can make a skirt - a basic element of their wardrobe - with their own hands.

Materials and tools

Materials you need to get:

  1. Tulle fabric. There are different types and differ in hardness and density. Depending on the model and purpose of the product, a choice of material is made according to the appropriate parameters.
  2. Lining fabric. It should be opaque and not create discomfort when adjacent to the body. A good option is satin.
  3. Material for the outer layer. If the skirt is sewn for a wedding dress, then you will need a veil, organza, and chiffon. Also, tulle, guipure, and openwork are used both for festive dresses and for everyday wear.
  4. Material for edging and belt. If the pattern involves a wide belt or edging along the bottom edge, you need to choose a suitable material. It should be combined in color and overall tone, as well as in softness and strength with the selected type of tulle.
  5. Decor elements. Jewelry, braid, beads, glass beads, sparkles - whatever your heart desires.
  6. Sewing threads. Quite durable and definitely matching.
  7. Elastic band for sewing. It should also match the color of the item.

  • tracing paper, cardboard or white paper - for patterns;
  • chalk, soap, felt-tip pen or pencil - for drawing;
  • centimeter;
  • scissors or rotary cutter (can be replaced with a sharp stationery knife);

How to choose the right tulle?

Tulle can be soft and hard, matte and shiny, colored and plain, it can be classic or decorated with beads and appliqués.

The fabric differs from each other in the size of the cells and the ability to hold its shape.

The material is sold in bobbins and in rolls for cutting.

The choice depends on the appearance of the future product and the ease of use of the material. The stiffer the tulle, the better it will keep its shape, the fuller the skirt will be. The soft version is good for a tight silhouette and for summer outfits - it flows and fits well on the figure. Often several types of material are combined in one suit - the hard one is used for the petticoat, the softer one is used for the top of the product.

Quality depends on the manufacturer, each has a number of advantages and disadvantages.

Below is a table with a brief description of the different types of tulle that textile stores usually offer for sale. Since the choice of goods from domestic manufacturers is larger and therefore difficult to give an objective assessment, the table shows the most popular foreign manufacturers.

Manufacturer or nameCharacteristic
TürkiyeMedium size cells. The quality of the material is average. Keeps its shape well and is easy to use.
USASmall cells. High quality. The material is elastic and easily returns to its original shape after washing and stretching.
ChinaLarge cells. Medium quality. It holds its shape worse, but is quite soft.
EurofatinFine mesh. It is distinguished from other types by its special softness and delicacy, and is also very convenient to work with - it is better for beginners in sewing to start with Eurofatin, since the fabric is not capricious and working with it does not require certain dexterity and skills.
Tulle "Aura"A denser and matte version, good quality.

If you decide to purchase tulle made in the USA, check with the seller about the country of origin. Sometimes Chinese tulle comes from the USA - often of low quality. The reseller purchases goods at a low price, and then sells them at the same price as fabric from an American manufacturer, while when supplied to foreign markets it is indicated that the material is from the USA. Be carefull!

Tailoring rules

Before you start, read some tips that will be very useful in your work.

  1. Calculation of measurements. To sew, you will need to measure your waist circumference and the length of the product. To get the length of the elastic, add 2 cm to the circumference. Calculation of the height figure is done from the waist line to the desired length - for example, to the knee. The lining should not protrude outwards - therefore, it needs to be made shorter by a few centimeters. The lining is cut in the shape of a rectangle.
  2. Fabric consumption- minimum 6 meters. The exact indicator depends on the pomp, style, and number of layers.
  3. Sewing features. If you sew by hand, make small stitches, no more than 2.5 mm, close to each other. If you are using a machine, set it to the maximum stitch, and loosen the tension of the lower thread.
  4. Ironing seams. It is necessary to iron the seams. Heat the iron to its lowest setting.
  5. Features of matter. Tulle is a capricious and delicate fabric. Working with her will require patience and perseverance. To prevent the material from moving, press it to the work surface with something heavy. You can use regular cans as cargo.
  6. The elastic band can be knitted- you can order one on the Internet, buy it, or simply tie it with regular elastic rubber. On sale this is called a “top tube” or “elastic bandage”.

If the material is highly electrified, spray it with water from a spray bottle.

Step-by-step instructions - master class

We will need:

  • tulle;
  • satin gold ribbon for decoration;
  • lining fabric;
  • a roll of strong wrapping paper or thin, easy-to-tear fabric tape.

Pattern:

  1. First we make the lining. As written above, in the shape of a rectangle. Its width is equal to 1 ½ of the waist measurement, and 2 cm must be added to the length according to height for an allowance along the edge.
  2. Now the skirt itself. It will be in 4 layers. We do the calculation as follows: multiply the waist circumference figure by 3; multiply the resulting number by 2 (by 4 if the girth exceeds 66 cm). Divide the product by 36. This will be the value of matter consumption.

Lining:

  1. After making the necessary calculations, make a pattern. Transfer the pattern to the fabric and cut out a rectangle.
  2. Fold it in half and iron or press firmly along the free edges.
  3. Make 2 rows along the top edge for assembly. For the front one, make a 1.5 cm indent from the edge, and the same for the bottom one. Sweep. Leave the ends of the threads long.
  4. Indent 1.5 cm on each side and sew using a typewriter. In the future, it will be more convenient for you to wear a skirt - it will slide over your body more easily.
  5. Connect the sides together, leaving 5mm at each edge and overlapping them.

  6. Cut two wide strips of paper. Together they should be equal to the waist measurement number.
  7. Pin the paper strips to the front edge so that the lining is flush with the paper strip.
  8. Sew both rows directly over the paper at the gathering points.
  9. Remove stripes.
  10. Fold the lining in half and secure with a pin in the center of the waistband. Set the finished piece aside for now.
  1. Cut the fabric to the width of the product.
  2. Place all 4 parts next to each other - make sure that the ends meet exactly.
  3. To prevent the canvas from moving, place cans or other weights along the edges.

  4. Treat all 4 layers in the same way as the lining - just don't fold them in half. Set the stitch pitch on the machine to 3 mm.

  5. Gather the 4 layers together by folding the side seams towards each other so that they all point in the same direction.
  6. Align the layers well.
  7. Sweep.

  8. Set the stitch pitch to maximum and topstitch all 4 layers. Use threads of a contrasting, bright color. It's better to use nylon thread. Leave the ends of the threads long and free.
  9. Fold the material in half and mark the middle of the top with a pin or clothespin.
  10. Attach the backing to the workpiece, connecting the central parts of both parts and aligning them over the entire area. The wrong side of the chiffon should be in contact with the right side of the lining.

  11. Remove colored threads.
  12. Now you need to sew the chiffon to the lining. Stitch pitch - 3 mm. Use strong, matching thread.
  13. Sew along the sides and top.

Helpful advice. To avoid mistakes and cut off excess, use lined paper, and a rotary cutter is also very suitable for cutting. If you use scissors, make sure they are as sharp as possible.

Skirt models

For every occasion, be it a children's party, a party - or just for every day - you can find a suitable option.

Tutu skirt (Tutu) for girls

If you have a little daughter, you’ve probably at least once thought about purchasing one - after all, this model is universal and suitable for any children’s event; and, of course, what girl didn’t imagine herself as a fairy or princess? Now you can make your own Tutu skirt and please your little one.

First of all, you need to decide on the size. The table will help with this.

Age (years)Length(cm)Length including stretch (cm)Waist(cm)
1-2 46-50 51 52-53
2-3 59 64 57-58
4-5 61 67 58
5 61-63 66-68 56-58
6 61-64 68-69 55-58
7 63-65 69-70 57-59
8 65-67 70-72 58-61
9-10 67-70 72-75 60-62
11-12 73-76 72-81 64-68

The figures are approximate and the maximum length according to height is indicated.

Now let's get down to the process itself. Below there will be 2 options - simple and more complicated.

No sewing

You need a decorative elastic band, a hoop, and evenly cut strips of soft translucent chiffon. This seamless skirt can be made in an hour!

Just wrap the rubber around the hoop tightly so that it doesn’t move, tie the ends and tie the ribbon onto the elastic. Remove from the hoop - and you're done! More details on how to knit knots and cut ribbons are below.

With elastic band

We will need:

  • canvas of different colors;
  • rubber;
  • two pieces of cardboard.

Instructions:

Prepare the elastic - measure and sew.

Now the cardboard. Its width should be approximately 24-36 cm, and its length should be 1½ of the figure for your product. Make 2 parts.

Cut strips (48 pcs.)

  1. Place the cardboard halves together.
  2. Place the end of the material against the edge of the cardboard (top or bottom).
  3. Wrap the cardboard around (vertically).
  4. Do this as many times as you need stripes of a given color.
  5. Now take your scissors, bring them to the gap between the pictures and cut the strips.
  6. Do the same with each color.

We knit knots:

  1. Place 3 strips of fabric (different colors) together. Fold in half.
  2. Place the rubber band on the cardboard.
  3. Pull out the middle piece slightly at the bend and insert it about 3 cm under the rubber.
  4. Carefully insert the ends of the material into the resulting loop.
  5. Tighten the knot. It shouldn't be too tight, but it shouldn't be too loose either.
  6. Tie knots, trying to evenly distribute the colors - may you get a whole rainbow!

The final stage:

That's all! Now your skirt has fluffy and neat ends. You can safely use it to create a snowflake costume for a children's party.

Skirt sun

To get started, do the following calculations:

  1. Measure your waist circumference and estimated hem length.
  2. Add 5 cm to the height indicator.
  3. Divide the girth number by 3.14 and then by 2. This will give you the radius of the waistband.
  4. Add both values. We denote the result by the number A.

If A ≤ 27, you will need a soft chiffon consumption of approximately 6 * 1.7 meters. If A >27, then 10-12 meters.

In addition to soft chiffon, you will need a stiffer option for the lining. To find out the consumption, multiply the waist circumference by 1.5 - this will be the length. The width depends on the total length of the hem.

In addition to chiffon, stock up on a wide satin ribbon. We will need an elastic band and braid, tracing paper.

Operating procedure:

  1. Using your calculations, make a drawing. White arrow - radius, black - length.
  2. Cut out the template.
  3. Fold soft chiffon in half in height if A ≤ 27.
  4. Now fold in half like a book and in half again to get 8 layers of fabric.

  5. Fold 2 circles and connect. Do the same with all the circles.
  6. Place the blanks on top of each other and mark 4 points along the upper contour. Secure them with clothespins.

  7. Sew in the elastic, carefully connect the base and half-suns. Work along the bottom contour so that the lining does not stick out.

Multilayer

For this work you will need a piece of fabric 600*150 cm and a wide ribbon for the belt.

Actions:

Chopinka

Chopinka (tutu) is a classic model. It is necessary to have a gather along the top edge, there can be up to 3 layers, the style is midi. The pattern of parts can be either in the shape of rectangles (this is also called “tatyanka”) or in the shape of a half-sun. You can calculate the amount of material and sew a shopinka using our step-by-step master class.

With frills

Instructions:

  1. Multiply the girth number by 3, leave the height measurement the same.
  2. Cut out a rectangle for the base, and overlock the top and bottom edges.
  3. Connect the sides of the base and stitch.
  4. To make frills, cut equal strips. For convenience, it is better to use lined paper.
  5. Fold all the strips in two, do not smooth them too much - so as not to lose the airiness effect.
  6. Lay out the base on the table. Take one strip and attach it with a clothespin to the very top edge. Then - the next one, and so on until the very bottom. Make sure that the layers do not shift.
  7. Now sew.
  8. Sew in the elastic. That's all!

American

Procedure:

  1. Calculate the size of the base: double the waist measurement number and add 5 cm.
  2. Pattern for an American woman - 3 rectangles: yoke, middle and hem. The yoke is sewn in the same way as for any other skirt. It can be made with flowers - for example, decorated with a chrysanthemum.

  3. Baste the top edge, but do not sew it yet.
  4. Cut ribbons from thin fabric approximately 2.5*12 cm. For each ruffle - 4 parts.

  5. Lay out and secure the ruffles starting from the top edge.
  6. Trim it.
  7. Sweep.
  8. Turn inside out and stitch.
  9. Next, you can sew on a wide belt, decorating it with a bow or flowers, or connect the base to the yoke.

With a train

How to make a bushy ponytail? Making such a skirt is not as difficult as it seems at first glance.

You will also need to make a lining and a belt. This option involves many layers (see above how to sew a multi-layer model).

Details can be cut in stripes, half-sun, solid halves - there is a choice.

It is advisable to use chiffon of different softness and transparency: denser and stiffer for the skirt itself, transparent and flowing for the train.

The main difficulty is how to correctly calculate the amount of matter. First make a schematic sketch - mark at what level each layer will be, from longest to shortest. It will be easy for you to calculate the height measurements.

Calculation of a skirt with a train. Video:

When calculating the width, consider how fluffy the hem will be. The more magnificent, the more fabric will be required. Use the previous calculations as a basis. You can take more material for the train; for the main part, on the contrary, use a minimum.

Long floor-length skirt for girls

This style is perfect for tall, slender girls.

The pattern for such a model is made according to the “sun skirt” type, with the only difference being that more fabric is required.

You will need 2 types - medium hardness for the bottom layer and eurofatin for the top layer. If the skirt is single-layer, then we take only eurofatin. This material is ideal for a maxi model - it flows perfectly and fits the figure.

A combination of a plain lining or bottom layer with a colored or patterned top layer will look very beautiful - the main thing is that all the shades are the same color scheme.

What to wear with a tulle skirt?

A lush, weightless skirt goes well with denim jackets and shirts, with openwork knit jumpers and cute sweaters with a pattern - this is a great option for everyday wear.

The combination with tops and T-shirts with bright prints will look unusual, but very stylish.

There is no competition - delicate lace, openwork, translucent blouses in soft pastel colors. The image will be very feminine and romantic.

A skirt in bright colors - yellow, red, black - will go well with plain satin blouses in bright pure tones with puffed sleeves and a V-neck. This is a good choice for a party and for every day.

And, of course, for festive and carnival costumes, a tulle skirt is an indispensable option.

How to sew a tulle petticoat with your own hands

The petticoat or petticoat was totally popular in the 60s of the last century. Back then, absolutely all girls wore flared skirts and sun flared skirts. True, tulle did not exist for free sale in those years, and the rigidity of cotton fabric was imparted with a starch solution.

Today, petticoats are worn under special style weekend dresses, at prom or for an evening out. And practically no wedding dress is complete without this element of clothing. Dresses that are full from the waist are not suitable for everyone, they are uncomfortable, and such a full petticoat is very expensive. Therefore, many people sew an underskirt with fullness along the bottom edge.

The pattern of a flared skirt is taken as a basis.. First, let's figure out how to sew a sun skirt, and only after that we'll start decorating the bottom edge.

Operating procedure:

  • Make a pattern for a knee-length sun skirt and sew it according to your measurements.
  • Now you need to correctly calculate the length and width of the frill.
  1. The width is calculated simply: measure the distance from the end of the tulle skirt to the point where you want the overskirt to end. Multiply the resulting value by 2 and get the width of the frill. For the frill you will need tulle 2 m wide.
  2. Measure the hem of the finished skirt, the length of the frill should be 3 times this value. That is, if your skirt hem is 3 m, then you need a strip 3x3 = 9 meters long.

The process of sewing a tulle skirt

All actions must be performed in the prescribed manner. This way you won't miss anything and can do everything right.

To complete the work and a skirt 50 centimeters long you will need:

  • fabric - tulle, size 5*3 meters,
  • lining. It all depends on how many layers of tulle there will be. Of course, in our case there will be 8 layers that will not show through, but we will still use the lining. You need to choose the same color as the fabric,
  • marker, pins,
  • sewing tool,
  • sewing machine,
  • For convenience, you can use a mannequin.

Sequencing:

  1. First, we will need two patterns so that the future tulle skirt model will be as fluffy as possible. Each layer of tulle must be fixed in a certain way. The 4 upper layers of the skirt should have a diameter several times larger than the lower ones, since there will be gathers at the top of the waist.
  2. We fold the pre-prepared tulle along three meters and repeat this action again. Thus, four layers of the future skirt are ready.
  3. The resulting 4 layers are laid in such a way that a finished skirt is obtained. Next you need to sew a line with wide stitches. We put everything on the mannequin and adjust it to the waist.
  4. We do the same with the lower layers, but do not forget about the spaces left for lightning. Everything is adjusted to fit the waist.
  5. We smooth the place where the zipper should be and sew it there.
  6. Next, we connect the resulting block of lower parts with the upper ones. Everything is done on a mannequin to fit your waist.
  7. Next, we use a sewing machine along all edges.
  8. Since there was no room for a zipper in the upper layers, this needs to be done. You need to understand that there are 4 lower layers, there is already a ready-made skirt, the upper layers are needed for decoration and adding pomp.
  9. The top layers are cut and pinned along the edge of the zipper. This must be done carefully so as not to damage the fabric.
  10. We sew the upper layers of tulle to the skirt with a needle; it is better to use a hidden seam.
  11. The lining is made in the half-sun style, since we have already chosen the color in advance, there will be no problems in combination. The radius should fit your waist.
  12. The resulting lining is ironed and stitched. All raw edges need to be processed and do not forget about the zipper. The area for the zipper should also be prepared.
  13. We apply the resulting lining to the skirt. This is done on the wrong side and all edges are stitched.
  14. In the zipper area, the lining should be located at a distance of 0.5 centimeters from the teeth themselves. After aligning the edges, we sew it with a hidden seam.
  15. We now have an almost finished shoppen skirt; all that remains is to process the upper part. A strip 100 millimeters wide is cut from the fabric for the lining along the waist. Next you need to fold it in half and iron it.
  16. Sew the belt to the skirt.
  17. The belt, as well as the lining, must be combined with the zipper.
  18. At the last stage, you need to hang the skirt on a hanger, so it will hang down, then cut off all the layers at the same level so that they are the same length.
  19. The resulting skirt, made with your own hands from tulle, will be an excellent decoration for a girl’s wardrobe.
